Today NASA announced they will be postponing the selection of two commercial cargo providers to be awarded the second round of Commercial Resupply contracts for the International Space Station (ISS) program. The news came the same day NASA was expected to announce the contract winners after numerous delays over the last year. NASA also announced that Boeing, one of the five contenders for the CRS-2 contract, will no longer be in the running. According to a NASA spokesperson from Johnson Space Center: “The anticipated award date has been revised to no later than Jan. 30, 2016, to allow time to complete a thorough proposal evaluation and selection. Since the agency is in the process of evaluating proposals, we are in a procurement communications blackout. For that reason, NASA cannot answer questions about this procurement at this time....

Boeing has dropped out of the competition to resupply the space station and rumors indicate that Lockheed may also be out. If the rumors prove to be true, that leaves Sierra Nevada, Orbital-ATK, and SpaceX. Winners will be announced in January.

Its been over three months since the loss of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services (CRS)-7 Dragon cargo mission to the International Space Station (ISS) for NASA, which appeared to have fallen victim to a failed helium tank strut, provided by an external supplier. Now the Hawthorne, CA-based company stands ready to resume launches of its workhorse Falcon-9 rocket, in a heavily modified form, in as soon as “6-8 weeks”, and will do so on the Orbcomm OG-2 Mission-2 to deliver 11 satellites to orbit for Orbcomm.“As we prepare for return to flight, SpaceX together with its customers SES and Orbcomm have evaluated opportunities to optimize the readiness of the upcoming Falcon 9 return-to-flight mission,” says SpaceX in a statement released this afternoon. “All parties have mutually agreed that SpaceX will now fly the Orbcomm-2 mission on the return-to-flight Falcon 9.”

WASHINGTON — NASA announced Oct. 14 that is awarding more than $17 million in contracts for dedicated launches of cubesats to three companies, none of whom have yet to place a single satellite into orbit.As part of its Venture Class Launch Services program, NASA awarded contracts for one launch each to Firefly Space Systems of Cedar Park, Texas; Rocket Lab USA, headquartered in Los Angeles but with most of its engineering staff based in New Zealand; and Virgin Galactic of Long Beach, California. The combined value of the contracts was $17.1 million.The program is designed to provide dedicated launches of groups of cubesats. Such satellites today typically fly as secondary payloads, with little control over their orbit and schedule. An existing NASA program, called Education Launch of Nanosatellite, or ELaNa, arranges the launch of NASA and university cubesats on NASA-sponsored missions with excess capacity.

Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of private spaceflight company Blue Origin and founder and CEO of Amazon.com, announced today that Blue Origin will make Florida's Space Coast its home port for reusable rocket launches.Blue Origin, which Bezos founded in 2000, will launch rockets and spacecraft from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The company will lease the launchpad and establish a "21st century production facility" to manufacture a reusable fleet of orbital vehicles. Florida Governor Rick Scott praised the venture, which he said will "invest $200 million locally and create 330 jobs.""As a kid, I was inspired by the giant Saturn V missions that roared to life from these very shores," Bezos said during the announcement here today (Sept. 15). "Today, we're thrilled to be coming to the Sunshine State for a new era of exploration." [Watch Blue Origin Announce Its Florida Launch Plans]Bezos made the announcement during an event close to Launch Complex 36, which saw its last launch in 2005. Speakers at the event included Governor Scott and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla).At the event, Bezos also unveiled an artist's concept image of Blue Origin's new orbital launch vehicle, which Bezos said has been nicknamed "Very Big Brother." The new rocket will launch and land vertically to reuse its first stage.The new Florida facility will include a rebuilt launch pad, a facility for performing acceptance tests of the new BE-4 rocket engine, and a processing facility for manufacturing, integrating and prepping vehicles for flight."We'll be launching from here later this decade," Bezos said of the new Florida facility. Bezos told reporters that the company received detailed proposals from five states wishing to host the new facility.Blue Origin is one of several private companies—like SpaceX, Boeing, Virgin Galactic and XCOR Aerospace—in the race to offer commercial trips to space for passengers. Last week, Boeing opened a facility for its new Starliner space capsule, formerly known as the CST-100. NASA plans to use the Starliner capsule and SpaceX's Crew Dragon vehicle to launch U.S. astronauts starting in 2017.The Kent, Washington-based Blue Origin is currently developing a vehicle called New Shepard that is designed to take passengers on short suborbital trips so they can experience the thrill of weightlessness and see the blackness of space without the filter of Earth's atmosphere. The company will launch only the new orbital vehicle from the Florida facility; New Shepard will continue to launch from the company's facility in West Texas.Blue Origin launched a successful test flight of New Shepard last April. That spacecraft, like the new orbital launch vehicle, will feature a reusable rocket booster capable of vertical landings—a technology that space industry leaders have said can dramatically reduce the cost of commercial spaceflight. During the April test, the passenger segment of New Shepard successfully separated from its rocket booster, but the rocket itself was not recovered.

To power its new orbital launch vehicle, Blue Origin is developing a more powerful rocket engine known as the BE-4, which is a joint venture with launch provider United Launch Alliance (ULA). The BE-4 is slated to be ULA's engine of choice for its own new rocket, the Vulcan, which will have a reusable component. Blue Origin and ULA announced a production agreement for the BE-4 engine last week."You will hear us before you see us," Bezos said today. "Our American-made BE-4 engine—the power behind our orbital launch vehicle—will be acceptance-tested here. Our BE-4 engine will also help make history as it powers the first flight of United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket."Cooperation between NASA and private companies has accelerated in the past year.Last week, Boeing opened its Commercial Crew Cargo Processing Facility for the Starliner space capsule at NASA's Kennedy Space Center near the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. That facility is located inside one of NASA's old space shuttle hangars, which Boeing has repurposed for the Starliner vehicle.Meanwhile, commercial spaceflight company SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, has captured its own foothold on Florida's Space Coast. The company recently signed a 20-year lease with NASA to use the agency's Apollo and shuttle-era Launch Pad 39A complex to launch its huge Falcon Heavy rocket.SpaceX has also been testing a reusable booster for its current Falcon 9 rocket, and has made several unsuccessful attempts to land the booster stage on a drone ship this year. SpaceX hopes to attempt another landing later this year.Bezos said he looks forward to Blue Origin becoming a part of the long legacy of spaceflight associated with the Cape Canaveral region. "You residents of the Space Coast have enjoyed front-row seats to the future for almost 60 years. That's pretty cool," Bezos said. The first shipment of Orbcomm’s 11-satellite payload for the Falcon 9 rocket’s first flight since a June launch failure has arrived at Cape Canaveral, and the rest of the spacecraft will reach the Florida spaceport in the coming days, Orbcomm officials said Thursday.The liftoff is expected in December aboard SpaceX’s return-to-flight mission, and the maiden launch of an uprated version of the Falcon 9 booster designed to lift heavier payloads into space.“We are now planning around a December launch roughly four to five weeks from today,” said Marc Eisenberg, CEO of Orbcomm, in a quarterly earnings call with investment analysts Thursday. “While there’s still some work to do, mostly from the SpaceX side, December is achievable as long as their preparations continue to go well.”

WASHINGTON — A NASA investigation into last year’s failure of an Orbital ATK Antares launch vehicle could not identify a single technical root cause of the accident, a conclusion at odds with Orbital’s own investigation.An executive summary of a NASA Independent Review Team (IRT) report into the October 2014 loss of an Antares shortly after liftoff, released by NASA Oct. 29, concluded there was an explosion in the liquid oxygen turbopump in one of the two AJ-26 engines, designated E15, in the vehicle’s first stage about 15 seconds after ignition. The vehicle lost thrust and crashed to the ground near its launch pad.The explosion was triggered when rotating and stationary components in part of the turbopump came into contact. “This frictional rubbing led to ignition and fire” in the turbopump, and thus the explosion, the report states.

The power and propulsion section of Orbital ATK’s next Cygnus supply ship, featuring new solar panel and fuel tank designs, arrived at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday to be joined with a cargo module for a Dec. 3 launch to the International Space Station.The shipment comes nearly one year after Orbital ATK’s last space station supply flight crashed seconds after liftoff from Wallops Island, Virginia, aboard the company’s own Antares booster. Orbital ATK engineers blame the failure on one of the Antares main engines, and officials purchased two Atlas 5 rockets from United Launch Alliance to keep the Cygnus missions flying while a new engine model is added to the Antares.

SpaceX expects to return a repaired and upgraded Falcon 9 rocket to flight around the start of December, a company vice president said, less than six months after one exploded shortly after liftoff.The 208-foot-tall rocket carrying a load of cargo for the International Space Station exploded less than three minutes after liftoff from Florida on June 28.The cause of the accident was traced to faulty bracket inside the rocket's upper-stage engine. When the steel bracket broke, a bottle of high-pressure helium was released, causing the engine to over-pressurise and explode.

“NASA has announced the possibility to push back the date for the first manned flight for its Orion Program from 2021 to 2023 after the experience of its test flight in August.The mission, build to take humans farther than they’ve ever gone before, is costing NASA $6.77 billion in investment, but the US space agency said in a statement that after the last trial flight in August, the possibility of meeting the schedule target is rather unrealistic.The spaceship aims to send up to four astronauts to destinations beyond the Moon, as NASA is envisioning missions to asteroids and Mars in the coming decades. For now NASA’s released the news that Orion’s first manned flight won’t be happening before 2023.The Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle was originally part of NASA’s Constellation Program, which is no longer an active NASA program. Credit: NASAOrion will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. Orion will launch on NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System“Our work to send humans out into the solar system is progressing […] Orion is a key piece of the flexible architecture that will enable humanity to set foot on the Red Planet, and we are committed to building the spacecraft and other elements necessary to make this a reality” said Administrator Charles Bolden in a press release by NASA.Bolden also said the projections were based on President Barack Obama’s budget request for NASA, and he noted that the team is making “incredible progress” on building an exploration program that will carry humans farther into space than ever before, using the most powerful rockets ever built.Orion successfully completed its first flight test last year, when the empty spaceship circled Earth twice and then splashed down in the ocean and another demonstration flight is scheduled for 2018.Building in HistoryOrion is a milestone mission and NASA is making use of all its technology and lessons learned from earlier missions to build the new spacecraft. Orion plans to carry six astronauts compared with the three astronauts carried by Apollo mission. A heat shield will keep the astronauts safe and the crew module re-enters Earth’s atmosphere when it returns from deep space.Orion will use more modern technology in many other areas, such as computers, electronics, life support and propulsionThe Test FlightThe Orion Spacecraft is loaded with almost 1,200 sensors that helped it to complete a two-orbit, 4.5-hour flight on December 5, 2014. It tested many of the systems most critical to safety before it carries astronauts to space.Orion will launch on NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System. More powerful than any other rocket ever built, SLS will be capable of sending humans to an asteroid and eventually to Mars.”
