Many scientists like to think that science already understands the ways of the natural world. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in.

The impressive achievements of science seemed to support this confident attitude. But recent research has revealed unexpected problems at the heart of physics, cosmology, biology, medicine and psychology.

Dr. Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and 10 books, including Science Set Free (September 2012).

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

Rupert Sheldrake is one of the scientific forerunners of our time. He gives an immensely enjoyable talk at the recent "Electric Universe" conference.

Cleaning out some of the cobwebs of science, some of those never looked at assumptions that "everybody knows" are true ... except they aren't.

Notable Scientists Gather To Emphasize: Physical Material “Matter” Is Not The Only Reality

Notable Scientists Gather To Emphasize: Physical Material “Matter” Is Not The Only Reality | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.” – Nikola Tesla

A group of internationally recognized scientists have come together to stress the importance of what is still commonly overlooked in the mainstream scientific community – the fact that matter (protons, electrons, photons, anything that has a mass) is not the only reality. We wish to understand the nature of our reality, but how can we do so if we are continually examining only physical systems? What about the role of non-physical systems, such as consciousness, or their interaction with physical systems (matter)?

Fortunately, some scientists are studying non-physical systems, and the double slit experiment is a great example of  this.  A paper published by Dean Radin, PhD, in the peer-reviewed journal Physics Essays, explains how this experiment has been used multiple times to explore the role of consciousness in shaping the nature of physical reality....

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

Scientists are starting to look at not only matter but also at the causal spiritual principles behind the material reality out there...

An Interview with Deepak Chopra: You Are the Universe

An Interview with Deepak Chopra: You Are the Universe | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

Chopra: Science is struggling to explain what is called Reality.

We’ve been through several iterations about what the universe is made of, who made the universe, what made the universe. We’ve been through the divine universe as explained in the book of Genesis. We’ve been through Newtonian classical physics, relativistic physics, both general theory and also special theory of relativity—quantum mechanics, eternal inflation, cosmic inflation, multiverses, on and on.

None of these theories of science actually explains what Reality is or how we even know that there is something called Reality. So, the two basic mysteries of existence remain mysterious:

(1) What is the true nature of existence?

(2) How do we know that we exist or that something exists?

I felt it was incumbent upon me—along with the help of physicists, cosmologists, and quantum physicists including my co-author, Menas Kafatos—to really look at these two very fundamental questions. What is reality? What is existence? And how come we have awareness of that existence? That was the genesis of

Science, and especially physics, is in a blind alley.

Consciousness could be a side effect of 'entropy', say researchers

Consciousness could be a side effect of 'entropy', say researchers | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

The quest to understand human consciousness - our ability to be aware of ourselves and our surroundings - has been going on for centuries. Although consciousness is a crucial part of being human, researchers still don't truly understand where it comes from, and why we have it.

But a new study, led by researchers from France and Canada, puts forward a new possibility: what if consciousness arises naturally as a result of our brains maximising their information content? In other words, what if consciousness is a side effect of our brain moving towards a state of entropy?

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

They still regard the second law of thermodynamics as holy writ, which it definitely is not. Entropy is balanced by syntropy, its opposite. Syntropy is an ordering influence. It decreases disorder. It is associated with living things.

When will they learn that insisting the only thing that exists is the material will not allow us to understand the All?

Are graphene light-sponges the new solar sails?

A team of Chinese physicists has developed a new variety of light-based propulsion system with the ability to harness much greater forces than a conventional solar sail.

The key, according to the Nankai University-based group, is in swapping out the mirrored sail—which captures photonic energy as radiation pressure in much the same way a regular air-sail captures wind energy—for a pure-black graphene sponge. Rather than reflect off of the sail, light is absorbed by the sponge, which converts that energy into propulsion.

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

'Solar sails' are used to propel some of our space probes. Using graphene instead of mirrors, their efficiency could be very much increased...

EmDrive works: Nasa Eagleworks' paper has finally passed peer review, says scientist in the know | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

The EmDrive is the invention of British scientist Roger Shawyer, who proposed in 1999 that based on the theory of special relativity, electricity converted into microwaves and fired within a closed cone-shaped cavity causes the microwave particles to exert more force on the flat surface at the large end of the cone (i.e. there is less combined particle momentum at the narrow end due to a reduction in group particle velocity), thereby generating thrust.

His critics say that according to the law of conservation of momentum, his theory cannot work as in order for a thruster to gain momentum in one direction, a propellant must be expelled in the opposite direction, and the EmDrive is a closed system.

However, Shawyer claims that following fundamental physics involving the theory of special relativity, the EmDrive does in fact preserve the law of conservation of momentum and energy.

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

A self-contained electromagnetic drive that creates thrust in one direction... fuelless rocketry on the horizon!

Why are so many smart people such idiots about philosophy? | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

There's no doubt that Bill Nye "the Science Guy" is extremely intelligent. But it seems that, when it comes to philosophy, he’s completely in the dark.

The beloved American science educator and TV personality posted a video last week where he responded to a question from a philosophy undergrad about whether philosophy is a "meaningless topic.

My comment:

Bill Nye is completely lost on that question. He ends up arguing the side of the matrix, the constructed reality we live in.

Philosophy as I understand it, is asking ourselves the big questions and trying to figure out the answer ... Philosophy is the science that should guide physics for instance, it should provide input to look in the right direction.

... and it is of course a valid part of the world of science. Philosophy as taught today however, has somehow lost touch with its original purpose, which was that of an essentially explorative discipline.

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

Philosophy is meaningless? I don't think so.

The remains of a 200,000 year old advanced civilization found in Africa

The remains of a 200,000 year old advanced civilization found in Africa | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

The discovery was made in South Africa, around 150 km west of port Maputo. There, we find the remains of a huge metropolis that measures, according to tests, around 1500 square km.

This ancient city is, according to researchers, part of an even larger community with about 10,000 square kilometers and is believed to have been constructed 160,000 to 200,000 years before Christ.

According to Tellinger, it shows that the Sumerians and even the Egyptians inherited their knowledge from an earlier advanced civilization that lived at the southern tip of Africa more than 200,000 years ago… mining gold.

They carved detailed images into the hardest rock, worshiped the sun, and are the first to have carved an image of the Egyptian Ankh – key of life and universal knowledge, 200,000 years before the Egyptian civilisation  came to light.

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

We may find that there have been several civilisations on earth before our current one ... once we start to appreciate and learn to read the signs that were left behind. Anyway, here are the remnants of one located at the Southern tip of Africa that pre-dated ours by more than a hundred thousand years.

The Electric Cosmos

The Electric Cosmos | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

Modern astronomy and cosmology ignores electricity and misinterprets redshift.

There is a revolution just beginning in astronomy/cosmology that will rival the one set off by Copernicus and Galileo.  This revolution is based on the growing realization that the cosmos is highly electrical in nature.  It is becoming clear that 99% of the universe is made up not of "invisible matter", but rather, of matter in the plasma state.  Electrodynamic forces in electric plasmas are much stronger than the gravitational force.

Mainstream astrophysicists are continually “surprised” by new data sent back by space probes and orbiting telescopes.  That ought to be a clue that something is wrong.  New information always sends theoretical astrophysicists "back to the drawing board".  In light of this, it is curious that they have such "cock-sure" attitudes about the infallibility of their present models.  Those models seem to require major "patching up" every time a new space probe sends back data.

Astrophysicists and astronomers do not study experimental plasma dynamics in graduate school.  They rarely take any courses in electrodynamic field theory, and thus they try to explain every new discovery via gravity, magnetism, and fluid dynamics which is all they understand.  It is no wonder they cannot understand that 99% of all cosmic phenomena are due to plasma dynamics and not to gravity alone.

When confronted by observations that cast doubt on the validity of their theories, astrophysicists have circled their wagons and conjured up pseudo-scientific invisible entities such as neutron stars, weakly interacting massive particles, strange energy, and black holes.  When confronted by solid evidence such as Halton Arp's photographs that contradict the Big Bang Theory, their response is to refuse him access to any major telescope in the U.S.

Instead of wasting time in a futile battle trying to convince entrenched mainstream astronomers to seriously investigate the Electric/Plasma Universe ideas, a growing band of plasma scientists and engineers are simply bypassing them.  A new electric plasma-based paradigm that does not find new discoveries to be “enigmatic and puzzling”, but rather to be predictable and consistent with an electrical point of view, is slowly but surely replacing the old paradigm wherein all electrical mechanisms are ignored.

Team combines quantum physics and photosynthesis to make discovery that could lead to highly efficient solar cells

Team combines quantum physics and photosynthesis to make discovery that could lead to highly efficient solar cells | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

He set out to re-think solar energy conversion by asking the question: can we make materials for solar cells that more efficiently absorb the fluctuating amount of energy from the sun. Plants have evolved to do this, but current affordable solar cells - which are at best 20 percent efficient - do not control these sudden changes in solar power, Gabor said. That results in a lot of wasted energy and helps prevent wide-scale adoption of solar cells as an energy source.

Gabor, and several other UC Riverside physicists, addressed the problem by designing a new type of quantum heat engine photocell, which helps manipulate the flow of energy in solar cells. The design incorporates a heat engine photocell that absorbs photons from the sun and converts the photon energy into electricity.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that the quantum heat engine photocell could regulate solar power conversion without requiring active feedback or adaptive control mechanisms.

Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2016-11-team-combines-quantum-physics-photosynthesis.html#jCp

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

How do plants optimally use sunlight? These scientists just found out how the green color in plants is the 'sweet spot' of efficient energy capture. They think this might be a way of making more efficient solar cells.

I think this is a good step in the direction of understanding how Nature works so we can copy her...

The research was only possible because one man left his field of expertise to learn another one. Combining insights from both, he found the mechanism.

Reality doesn’t exist until we measure it, quantum experiment confirms

Reality doesn’t exist until we measure it, quantum experiment confirms | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

Australian scientists have recreated a famous experiment and confirmed quantum physics's bizarre predictions about the nature of reality, by proving that reality doesn't actually exist until we measure it - at least, not on the very small scale.

That all sounds a little mind-meltingly complex, but the experiment poses a pretty simple question: if you have an object that can either act like a particle or a wave, at what point does that object 'decide'?

Our general logic would assume that the object is either wave-like or particle-like by its very nature, and our measurements will have nothing to do with the answer. But quantum theory predicts that the result all depends on how the object is measured at the end of its journey. And that's exactly what a team from the Australian National University has now found...
Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

I believe that reality still exists but it only expresses itself when observed. Our thoughts and perceptions definitely do contribute to the reality we experience... they are necessary for it to come alive.

A particle of light, a photon, is a wave unless and until it is stopped (or observed or "detected") at which time it curls up and is expressed as a particle.

Billions of such particles then allow us to observe the energetic and material "reality" that surrounds us.

NASA Discovers "Lonely Mountain" on Ceres Likely a Salty-Mud Cryovolcano - or not? | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

Ceres’ mysterious mountain Ahuna Mons is seen in this mosaic of images from NASA’s Dawn spacecraft. On its steepest side, this mountain is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) high. Its average overall height is 2.5 miles (4 kilometers). The diameter of the mountain is about 12 miles (20 kilometers).

“There is nothing quite like Ahuna Mons in the solar system,” said Lucy McFadden of NASA Goddard, a co-author on the paper. “It’s the first cryovolcano we’ve seen that was produced by a brine and clay mix.”

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

So it's a unique object in the solar system, yet they have no problem identifying it as an ice volcano.

Rather than an ice volcano, I see an open excavation pit and right next to it a mountain of discarded debris. It even has the right type of flanks that you'd expect when piling mine tailings up really high... like what was it, some 4000 meters.

New Form of Carbon is Stronger Than Graphene and Diamond

New Form of Carbon is Stronger Than Graphene and Diamond | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

The sixth element, carbon, has given us an amazing abundance of extraordinary materials. Once there was simply carbon, graphite and diamond. So it’s hard to believe that carbon has any more surprises up its sleeve. And yet today, Mingjie Liu and pals at Rice University in Houston calculate the properties of another form of carbon that is stronger, stiffer and more exotic than anything chemists have seen before.

Researchers Discover the Blue Whirl, a New Type of Flame

Researchers Discover the Blue Whirl, a New Type of Flame | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

Naturally occurring fire tornadoes are scary, but a new clean-burning, controlled version could help clean oil spills

Traditional fire whirls produced in forest fires or urban fires burn with a yellow color, which occurs when the fire is not able to completely consume its fuel and produces soot. Blue whirls, however, have access to more oxygen and completely combust their fuel, burning quickly and much more cleanly.

According to their paper, the researchers discovered the whirl while investigating the possibility of using fire whirls to clean up oil spills. As they produced the whirls using a stream of heptane gas pumped through a tray of water, they watched as the yellow swirl stabilized and settled into the stable blue phase. They believe that the stable blue whirl forms because of the water barrier.

Planet Nine may have tilted entire solar system except the sun

Planet Nine may have tilted entire solar system except the sun | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

The sun's spin isn't totally upright compared with the orbits of the planets. Could this be because a jealous, distant world shoved its siblings?

A jealous Planet Nine may have shoved its siblings for attention. If a massive ninth planet exists in our solar system, it might explain why the planets are out of line with the sun.

The eight major planets still circle the sun in the original plane of their birth. The sun rotates on its own axis, but surprisingly, that spin is tilted: the axis lies at an angle of 6 degrees relative to a line perpendicular to the plane of the planets.

There are a few theories to explain this jaunty slant, including the temporary tug of a passing star aeons ago, or interactions between the magnetic fields of the sun and the primordial dusty disc that formed the solar system. But it is hard to account for why the sun’s spin is aligned the way it is relative to the planets.

Two teams of astronomers have just announced a new explanation: a hypothetical massive planet in the outer solar system could be interfering with all the other planets’ orbits...

Sepp Hasslberger's insight:

Planet X - now going by the name of Planet Nine - may be a serious disturbing influence in our solar system... we just haven't found it yet on telescopes but the orbits and spin axis inclination of other planets point to its existence.

Nasa finding confirms Indian theory: Black holes are 'ultra hot balls of fire' - Firstpost | Science, Space, and news from 'out there' | Scoop.it

Recent observation by Nasa scientists of giant flares of X-rays from a black hole confirms theory that the black holes ultra hot balls of fire like our Sun.

It came as a surprise when Nasa announced last month that two of its space telescopes caught a huge burst of X-ray spewing out of a super massive black hole.

What is unique about this giant flare is it appeared to be triggered by the eruption of a massive corona (charged particles) from the "black hole". If nothing can get out of a black hole, how did the corona come out of it?

Abhas Mitra, till recently head of theoretical astrophysics at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai and currently Adjunct Professor at the Homi Bhabha National Institute says Nasa's observation has only bolstered his theory that "true" black holes do not exist and that the so-called black holes are in fact hot balls of magnetized plasma...
