This Video Demystifies Wine Terms Like "Aerate," "Corked," and "Tears" | Southern California Wine and Craft Spirits Journal | Scoop.it
Wine is an amazing--and ancient--drink, and while opinions on how to judge its quality and value differ, one thing is certain: There's a lot of language around it. This video from Science Friday explains why some of our favorite wine hacks work, and demystifies terms like "corked," "tears," and more.

Time For The World's Best Prison Wine

Time For The World's Best Prison Wine | Southern California Wine and Craft Spirits Journal | Scoop.it
Time For The World's Best Prison Wine. Inmates in federal prisons across the nation rejoiced today in anticipation of the possibility for improvements to their lot in life (without parole). Their celebrations were not the result of the implementation of new prison overcrowding reforms, which are due to take effect in the near future. Instead, prisoners everywhere trembled with the giddy excitement of Junior Prom queens at the possibility that they might soon share a cell block with Rudi Kurniawan, who was sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison. Kurniawan was found guilty in December of counterfeiting some of the world's most expensive wines for fun...

There is one important way that wine is like food—the cheaper it is, the more manipulated it is. But that’s the way we like it. Americans don’t like surprises. This explains 9-11. And condoms.

The Minimalistic Wine Label Approach: Are We Heading Toward Textless Labels?

The Minimalistic Wine Label Approach: Are We Heading Toward Textless Labels? | Southern California Wine and Craft Spirits Journal | Scoop.it
There’s been some chatter recently about Uproot Wines and its newly introduced color-coded labels that represent the wine’s flavor palette. See, e.g., Millennials Targeted with Color-Coded Labels. The colored boxes on the true front label of the wine features what Uproot Wines declares is a flavor palette, or a profile of what the wine in the bottle tastes like. For example, its 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon features a label with colored boxes in shades of raspberry, mustard yellow, burgundy, grape, and brown.

Yeast 2.0: Is a Custom-Built Yeast in Our Winemaking Future? | News | News & Features | Wine Spectator | Southern California Wine and Craft Spirits Journal | Scoop.it
Wine Spectator reports that a worldwide network of geneticists are trying to engineer the world’s first complex living organism—their own version of winemaking’s workhorse yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A dozen labs are simultaneously sequencing the 16 chromosomes that house the 12 million base pairs (the building blocks of any DNA sequence) that will make this fully synthetic yeast cell, affectionately known by the team as Yeast 2.0.

Producing high-quality wines can be difficult even when Mother Nature cooperates and grapes arrive at the winery in pristine condition. However, in some years events occur that thwart the efforts of even the most vigilant and skilled vineyard manger in producing ripe and undamaged fruit.

Will Climate Change be the Death of Cork?

Will Climate Change be the Death of Cork? | Southern California Wine and Craft Spirits Journal | Scoop.it
Will Climate Change be the Death of Cork?. There's a lot of talk these days about the impacts of climate change on wine. Weather patterns are shifting, volatility of weather continues to increase, and yes, temperatures continue to rise in some areas of the globe, pushing harvests earlier and earlier. Most of these discussions focus on the impact to grape growing, but a recent study shows that another component of the wine world may be under threat from climate change: corks. Over the past twenty years, cork bark has been getting thinner and thinner. According to a group of researchers at the University of Lisbon, who published findings...
