Adrion Porter on the Power of Music and Sound in Film

Adrion Porter on the Power of Music and Sound in Film | Soundmarketing | Scoop.it

Adrion Porter: "I have always been fascinated with the contribution of music and sound to movies, television and “visual media”. Music has the unique ability to drive the energy of dialogue, punctuate action sequences, build character development, and advance the story narrative. Many films would not have been as successful without an awesome musical score or soundtrack."

New BMW Sound Logo

"For me it sounds like a mystery thriller or a sound effect of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. There is no fit to the aesthetics of BMW. Look at a print ad from BMW and listen to the new Sound Logo. Does it fit?"

- Karlheinz Illner

Soerin's insight:

To me, the old sound logo, the two strikes, sounded very powerful and gave a sense of premium craftsmanship. The new sound logo feels less powerful and mainly communicates speed. Not an improvement, I would say.

Field experiment: In-store music does affect shopping behaviour

Soerin's insight:

Although the consumers in this video state that they find in-store music very important, research by Andersson et al. (2012) suggests that consumers rate stores without music more positively on almost every aspect compared to stores with music. However, the most money was spend in stores with music, especially during hedonic consumption activities.

Andersson, P., Kristensson, P., Wastlund, E., and Gustafsson, A. (2012) 'Let the music play or not: The influence of background music on consumer behaviour', Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, 19, pp. 553-560.

Can other primates 'feel' music as we do? Henkjan Honing on beat induction (DUTCH)

Beat induction is the process in which a regular isochronous pulse is activated while one listens to music (i.e. the beat to which one would tap one's foot). Interestingly, the cognitive mechanism that allows us to infer a beat from a sound pattern, and to synchronize or dance to it, might be uniquely human. No primate tested so far—with exception of the human species—can dance or collaboratively clap to the beat of the music. Humans know when to start, when to stop, when to speed up or to slow down, in synchronizing with their fellow dancers or musicians. www.iedereenismuzikaal.nl

Music-driven Commercials: Volkswagen Pink Moon

Josh Rabinowitz, Senior Vice President/Director of Music for the Grey Group, on iV interactive blog: "Historically, Volkswagen has been able to break through with music. Did the music inspire their work? I’m not sure, but the use of music was really powerful…a few years ago they used the Nick Drake piece “Pink Moon” for a beatiful commercial that was an example of one of the best uses of music ever."
