I listened to Alistair Cooke's Letter from America from about 1960 until his death in 2004. Each 15 minute broadcast was pure magic. Radio at it's very, very best.

In The Dark is very pleased to announce the launch of the third Sound Bank Grant Scheme , an international fund for adventurous audio.

 

The Sound Bank scheme is offering funding of between £500 and £1500 towards the production of new audio pieces of 3 to 15 minutes duration each. The fund is open to first-time producers and students, migrants from other arts and media as well as experienced radio professionals seeking the opportunity to attempt something bold and adventurous.

Back in 1919, Walter Backerman’s grandfather delivered seltzer by horse and wagon on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Today, Walter continues to deliver seltzer around the streets of New York. Some customers, like Mildred Blitz, have been on the family route for more than 50 years. When Walter’s grandfather drove his cart there were thousands of seltzer men in the city; today Walter is one of the last.

The sound quality of such content is often poor: distorted, noisy, with garbled speech or indistinct music. Our interest lies in the causes of poor quality. Typical problems include: speaking off microphone; distorted speech; wind noise and microphone handling noise.
