NEW MUSIC: of Montreal – “Feminine Effects”

NEW MUSIC: of Montreal – “Feminine Effects” | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

of Montreal will release their rarities compilation, Daughter of Cloud, on October 23rd via Polyvinyl/Joyful Noise. We’ve heard two relics thus far (“Sails, Hermaphroditic”, “Our Love is Senile”), and now there’s another lost gem to download: “Feminine Effects”. Thanks to vocals by Kevin Barnes’ find, Rebecca Cash, the milky country psych-ballad feels like a warped St. Vincent track, or at least something Annie Clark might sing in a hotel lounge in Kansas City.

“I wrote the song many years ago, and for a long time I was searching for the right girl to sing the lead vocals,” Barnes told Rolling Stone, who premiered the track. “I tried a bunch of different people before I discovered Rebecca Cash. She helped me realize the old school honky tonk vibe I was envisioning.”

Interview: Matt Oriente (of Matt and Kim)

Interview: Matt Oriente (of Matt and Kim) | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it
Ask any fan of Matt and Kim what think they about their live show, and you’ll get a face full of hyperbolic statements: “They’re the most energetic fucking band I’ve ever seen”; “They changed my life”; “Catching Kim’s drumstick was just the greatest thing to happen to me”; “Did I mention how I’m going to marry Matt?”. It’s true, the Brooklyn couple tosses positive energy around like it’s a rubber football, but they also live for it.

At least that’s what I got whilst chatting with frontman Matt Oriente. It would appear that Oriente’s — and more specifically, the band — is always grasping big ideas. Whether it’s committing to weighty national tours or championing animal’s rights or recording another 25-30 songs, or performing multiple gigs per night, Matt and Kim maintain life in chaos. Christ, I’m stunned if they can remember to put on their clothing before walking the streets of Brooklyn.

Allah-Las formed in Los Angeles in 2008 around a mutual love for records, Los Angeles history, and the beach. They are all surfers and cover the city from the East Side (Mt. Washington) to way out West (Venice Beach) - and their sound reflects the geography of the city.

NEW: Josh Homme – “Nobody to Love”

NEW: Josh Homme – “Nobody to Love” | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme is still doing his thing: he’s been responsible for a few soundtrack contributions recently, most notably Aqua Teen Hunger Force. But now he’s branching out into cop drama soundtracking with this new cut from the credits of David Ayer’s great new movie End of Watch, “Nobody to Love,” which was written with help from the film’s resident composer, Dave Sardy. We’re no music supervisors, but the song sounds like a good fit – plenty of dramatic, crunching blues guitar riffs, layered soulful vocals, and sneaking background effects sound like cop movie gold.

Mini Mansions - "In You End Oh's"

Mini Mansions - "In You End Oh's" | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Here's two things about Mini Mansions. One, their guitarist is no other than Queens Of The Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman. Two, anything to do with 'mini' is as far from being reflective of their output as could be.

The first notion that comes to mind, listening to just about any of their tracks, is that these three guys are very fond of The Beatles. More specifically, The Beatles' juicy take on psychedelia. But where the Liverpudlian lads might have privileged a softer, elusive aesthetic, Mini Mansions are heading for grand and somehow stable key-driven tracks, dark & deep effusions of generously reverberated goodness and polyphonic deliriums. Add to those some vocal harmonies that will TRULY take you back to memories of the four most famous Northeners in rock&roll history, and you're in for a lush out-of-time psych-pop treat made of many layers to venture through as you please.

NEW VIDEO: The Pollies - Something New (Official Music Video)

When I tell you that The Pollies reside in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, you might assume that they play southern rock. And while you would be correct to some extent, I caution against listening to Where the Lies Begin with a oh-this-will-be-southern-rock filter. Yes, there are some southern accents and southern musical flourishes. But the classic Muscle Shoals sound as a launching pad, to which indie rock, soul and folk rock blend into a tangy stew. The breadth of the arrangements, the accomplished songwriting and heartfelt delivery demand that this album be taken on its own terms as an indie rock statement of a truly accomplished band.

NEW SONG: Memory Tapes - "Sheila"

Producer Dayve Hawk, aka Memory Tapes, will return with Grace/Confusion on December 4th via Carpark Records. Spanning six tracks and at a little over 39 minutes, the latest foray finds Hawk “drawing from space rock and classic electro” by piecing together tracks through “fragmented hooks, snatches of melodies, and bombasts of instrumentals,” according to a press release.

“I decided to showcase a kind of chaotic reaching,” Hawk explains. “I don’t think the record is flat-out shooting in all directions though, because I kept trying to rein it in as much as I embraced it. That’s why I called it Grace/Confusion.”

Brian Eno's Bonkers New iPad App Thinks for Itself

Brian Eno's Bonkers New iPad App Thinks for Itself | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

In Scape (a collaboration with Peter Chilvers) you make generative music by stacking various building blocks—called elements—onto a flat background tone. The elements all behave and sound different. They're bizarre programmed instruments, basically. What's more, as you add more facets to the sound landscape (SOUNDSCAPE??), the compositions take on a life and mood of their own. Eno and Chilvers use some thought creation alchemy doesn't quite make sense to us, but we love the results anyway. You can save your creations and play them again later, but because of all of randomness built into the way the elements sound each particular performance will sound different every time you play it. Does your brain hurt yet? Play with this app for a while and let it soothe you. Or drive you crazy. Scape is available for $6 in the iTunes store.
