UNDER THE RADAR: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "If We Were Vampires"

Jason Isbell, the great roots-rock singer-songwriter and former Drive-By Trucker, and his band the 400 Unit are going to release their new album The Nashville Sound next month, and you should be excited. The LP follows Isbell’s truly gorgeous 2015 LP "Something More Than Free", and it’s more of a rocker than Isbell’s last couple of albums. The album’s highlight might be its quietest, most tender song. “If We Were Vampires” is a soft, acoustic love song about feeling sad that, because of the limits of human biology, you’re not going to get to spend forever with the person you love. Isbell’s wife Amanda Shires sings backup, which adds a lot.

GUIDED BY VOICES MAKE THEIR DRUNKEN TV DEBUT ON ‘THE JON STEWART SHOW’

GUIDED BY VOICES MAKE THEIR DRUNKEN TV DEBUT ON ‘THE JON STEWART SHOW’ | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

The sixty-fourth episode of The Jon Stewart Show saw appearances by celebrity guests Anthony LaPaglia, Lisa Rinna, Matt Borlenghi and featured the television debut of lo-fi indie rock heroes Guided by Voices. The performance, which aired on March 30th in 1995, contained three numbers from GBV’s seminal album Alien Lanes, which would be released later that week on Matador. Almost as noteworthy as Guided by Voices’ relentless musical output of simplistic rock ballads (under two minutes), was their celebrated pastime of bigtime boozing. Their alcoholic aspirations were even pursued on live television performances, as vocalist Robert Pollard can be seen throughout the first half gripping a red Solo cup—the sign of a pro (see also Bannon, Steve) just moments away from full-blown inebriation.

UNDER THE RADAR: Outer Embassy - "Ironstrike"

Explore the psychedelic dance sounds of Outer Embassy’s debut LP. Oakland drum, bass, and synth trio Outer Embassy is set to release their debut LP June 2. Outer Embassy "was born from the desire to find a distinct crossing point of 70s Krautrock experimentalism, West-African soul rhythms, and sonic synthery." Drum and bass are the driving force throughout the LP, with the use of synths and vocals adding sonic color that never draw attention away from the rhythm. .the bay bridge

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Public Image Ltd - "Seattle"

Song from the album "Happy?" (1987) John Lydon: “The 'Happy?' LP did have a doom, death and destruction feel about it, very crunchy, tanks rolling, very military in its approach.” “'Happy?' was much more militant in its approach, kind of pissed off at the world. That was the attitude [...] Bear in mind that 'Happy?' was the first album that we as a band had done, so we were sort of being very cagey with each other in the writing. Nobody really let rip.

‘LOVE BITES’: A CHARMING DOCUMENTARY ON MORRISSEY SUPER-FANS FROM 1995

Though at times the various accents from some the fans featured in Love Bites are difficult to understand, it doesn’t prevent you from clearly seeing how utterly devoted they are to the former Smiths crooner. The documentary is based on a lovely group of people who followed Morrissey around during the early 1990s when he was out supporting his 1992 album Your Arsenal and 1994’s Vauxhall & I in the U.K. The first-hand accounts from the “irregular regulars” is pretty endearing stuff—especially when it comes to how seeing Moz live makes them feel, such as a young female fan who equated the experience to “attending the church of Morrissey.” Many of Moz’s male fans have their hair styled just like their idol and there’s even a guy who tricked out his scooter with pictures of Morrissey all over it. .dangerous minds

Roger Waters shares video for poignant new song “The Last Refugee”

First solo LP in over two decades, Is This the Life We Really Want?, lands next month. On June 2nd, Roger Waters will triumphantly return with his first solo album in 25 years, Is This the Life We Really Want?. The Pink Floyd frontman’s offering, today’s “The Last Refugee”, follows suit quality-wise. Waters’ voice is tender here, and backed by a similarly gentle mix of piano and minimal percussion. Its corresponding music video, helmed by Waters and past collaborator director Sean Evans, takes the emotional level up a notch by reminding us of the humanity of the Syrian refugee crisis — something that’s too often forgotten and obscured when politics and bureaucracy come into play.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Clash - "Spanish Bombs" - live Capitol Theatre - Passaic, NJ, 3/8/1980.

A good number of Strummer’s songs insist upon a deeper listen and oftentimes require a trip to the library. For example, “Spanish Bombs”. The singer penned the track after hearing about terrorist attacks aimed at Spain’s more touristy hotels, which reminded him of the IRA bombings in the UK. Just like a sly historian, Strummer weaved in references to the Spanish Civil War in the ’30s (“Or can I hear the echos from the days of ’39”) and poet and anti-fascist martyr Federico Garcia Lorca (“Federico Lorca is dead and gone”). He also condemns his fellow British countrymen for flying into the beautiful country, unaware of the domestic strife boiling around them. It’s all heavy stuff, but it doesn’t feel heavy, thanks to Mick Jones’ driving arrangements that take us from smoke-filled skies to sunny dances by the shore. One of many juxtapositions that would make up The Clash’s trademark sound. The Only Lyric That Matters: “Back home the buses went up in flashes/ The Irish tomb was drenched in blood/ Spanish bombs shatter the hotels/ My senorita’s rose was nipped in the bud” .

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Clash - "Complete Control"

Earlier in, The Clash got caught up in the money fever surrounding the London punk movement. Their manager, Bernie Rhodes, had the same dollar-sign eyes that Malcolm McLaren had when he signed The Sex Pistols, releasing “Remote Control” as a single without asking the band about it. Later, he would demand for “complete control” of their sound and image. Rightfully ticked off, Strummer and Jones wrote a scathing and painfully transparent reaction piece, the aptly titled “Complete Control”. “They said, ‘Release “Remote Control”/ But we didn’t want it on the label,'” as it goes — and so did Rhodes a year later. It’s a snotty track off their snotty US debut, and while it wasn’t available on the original UK release, us Americans wore it thin. “So punk rock,” one might have said. Even now. Quietly. The Only Lyric That Matters: “They said we’d be artistically free/ When we signed that bit of paper/ They meant let’s make a lotsa mon-ee/ An’ worry about it later”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Native Tongue - "Bit Part"

Song from the album “YOWL”, released in 1983. Pure genius from Massachusetts! The band formed by Michael Frackleton (drums, vocals), Louis Selvitella (bass, vocals) and Lee Leffler (guitar) was influenced by Gang of Four, PIL, ‘No Wave’ bands and reggae music (!). In 1981 the band released the self-titled EP on Detante Records. Their second wax, “YOWL”, a ten song album on Modern Method Records came out the year later.Their sound can be described as ‘high-powered, stripped down, formed by layering bass and guitar over a steady drum-based dance beat with pleasant dissonant vocals’ (Boston Rock magazine 1981).

MUSE share action-packed video for new single “Dig Down”

The English band's first release in nearly two years. Muse return today with their first new release since 2015’s Drones. Titled “Dig Down”, the track is a stuttering, mostly sparse number with hints of glam rock flare. The single was co-produced by Mike Elizondo and Muse and mixed by Spike Stent. Accompanying the track is an action-packed video directed by Lance Drake (Twin Shadow, Miike Snow). Aptly, it stars someone who knows quite a bit about persevering through tragedy: Lauren Wasser, a former model and athlete who lost her leg to toxic shock syndrome.

‘Eraserhead’ fans, you’re going to want this silver vinyl soundtrack reissue

‘Eraserhead’ fans, you’re going to want this silver vinyl soundtrack reissue | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

It’s been five years since Sacred Bones put out limited-issue box set reissue of the Eraserhead soundtrack, complete with tons of extras, the newly released track “Pete’s Boogie,” and so forth.

That product came in three pressings, all of which together totaled a good deal less than 3,000 copies, and today you’re lucky if you can score any of them for fifty bucks….. eighty is more like it. So if you’re looking to expand your LP collection with some primo and fucked-up ambient works composed by David Lynch and the movie’s sound designer, Alan R. Splet, you’ll be happy to hear that Sacred Bones has another pressing coming up this summer—this time on super-evocative silver wax.
