THIS IS OUR MUSIC: VIOLENT FEMMES – “Kiss Off”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: VIOLENT FEMMES – “Kiss Off”.

Perhaps the greatest encapsulation of teenage-geek angst the Violent Femmes ever performed, “Kiss Off” was by turns funny, playful, vulnerable, heartbreaking, combative, furious, self-conscious, despairing, hopeful, and hopeless.

It’s no mean feat to wedge such emotional complexity into a song less than three minutes long, especially a song with one, maybe two sections that might be considered verses. Like the rest of the group’s now-legendary 1982 debut, “Kiss Off” is simple, ragged, acoustic folk-rock, but it hits with a gut-churning, deeply cathartic intensity. Singer Gordon Gano can switch from a quivering murmur to a plaintive wail in the very next line, or turn up the nasal quality of his voice when he wants to project more attitude.

That flash of humor and spirit, popping up almost randomly in an oppressively bleak world, sums up the appeal of “Kiss Off” in a nutshell.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Plimsouls – “How Long Will It Take”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Plimsouls – “How Long Will It Take”.

The Plimsouls song “How Long Will It Take” from the 1980 debut album.

Opening up the second side of Everywhere at Once, “How Long Will It Take” shows the Plimsouls moving away somewhat from their garage-psychedelia toward a more folk-rock style. Strongly reminiscent of some of Gene Clark’s fine work in the Byrds, Peter Case uses some densely packed wordplay, resulting in a compact, emotional statement of longing. Musically, the song has a strong jangle melody, again not unlike some of the Byrds’ early melodies.

UNDER THE RADAR: Grace Mitchell – “Your Design”

UNDER THE RADAR: Grace Mitchell – “Your Design”.

What we know is that she is 16, from Portland, Oregon, and she has the musical ability of a woman who is older and wiser. Her voice is polished and powerful, and her songwriting is confident. There’s pop appeal here, but it’s deeper than the bubblegum sounds we’re used to hearing from teens who are still finding their footing. She’s only in high school, but she’s been making music for seven years—almost half of her life. And at only 16, Grace Mitchell sounds very sure that she’s doing exactly what she’s supposed to be doing.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Passions – “I’m in love with a German Film Star”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Passions – “I’m in love with a German Film Star”.

The Passions were a post-punk band formed by guitarist/vocalist Barbara Gogan, bassist Claire Bidwell, drummer Richard Williams, vocalist Mitch Barker, and guitarist Clive Temperley.

The Passions debuted in March of 1979 with the Needles and Pins single on Soho, which helped them gain a contract with Fiction, home of the Cure. A year passed between the release of the single and Michael and Miranda, the band’s debut LP. Another single and a pair of trips to the BBC studios for recording sessions preceded the release of their highest charting song, “I’m in Love With a German Film Star,” which hit number 25 on the U.K. pop chart during the winter of 1981.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Skids – “Into The Valley”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Skids – “Into The Valley”.

“Into the Valley” is a 1979 single by Skids, taken off their Scared to Dance album.

Jobson has said that the lyrics were written about the recruitment of Scottish youths into the army and more specifically about a friend who had been killed on a tour of duty in Northern Ireland.
Local legend still persists that the valley mentioned is a reference to High Valleyfield, known locally as “the Valley”, a village with a reputation for “mini warfare” between its residents and those of nearby towns and villages (namely Torryburn, Rosyth, Oakley and Inverkeithing), near Skids’ home town of Dunfermline.
