UNDER THE RADAR: Melody's Echo Chamber - "You Won't Be Missing That Part Of Me"

UNDER THE RADAR: The combination of fuzzed-out guitars and breathy, girlish vocals is by now an almost devalued musical currency, but this debut, a collaboration from Parisian singer Melody Prochet's and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, is a dream-pop music with some heft.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Cure – “A Night Like This”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Cure – “A Night Like This”.

Something of a secret Cure highlight — it wasn’t one of the band’s biggest singles, though it’s definitely one of the best — “A Night Like This,” from The Head on the Door, captures Robert Smith in one of his strongest performances, especially in terms of lyrics and singing. While his guitar work can’t be faulted — he and Porl Thompson combine a gentle shimmering melody with a stronger, harsher second line — it’s his other abilities that really come to the fore here.

As the Simon Gallup/Boris Williams rhythm section lays down a strong, punchy beat for the guitars to ride on, Smith details a cryptic but somehow just-right image of a relationship on the verge of collapse. Wishing the lover to stay but watching “like I’m made of stone as you walk away,” but in the end promising to come “to find you if it takes me all night,” it neatly sidesteps typical love imagery for something just that more confused, fraught, and, in the end, realistic. His hurt vocals suit the words exactly, growing even stronger as he goes, while the addition of Ron Howe’s guest saxophone at the end makes the conclusion all the more striking.

UNDER THE RADAR: Warpaint – “Disco//Very – Keep It Healthy”

UNDER THE RADAR: Warpaint – “Disco//Very – Keep It Healthy”.

“Disco // Very” and “Keep It Healthy” — two of the best tracks from Warpaint’s stellar self-titled sophomore album — get a double video treatment, tied together by director Laban Pheidias and some LA street skateboarders.

The video starts off with the Warpaint girls having a lot of fun dancing in the middle of the street before slickly transitioning to an LA skate park at night. Pheidias, who has also directed videos for Justin Timberlake and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., was a professional skateboarder before moving into directing. “These Warpaint videos are extra special to me for multiple reasons and not just because the girls are super rad and fun to work with,” he said. “Having been a professional skateboarder for many years I’ve really been wanting to incorporate skateboarding into a music video. So, when this project was presented to me with skateboarding already in the concept, I was of course psyched.”

LIVE SESSION: The Specials – “Hey Little Rich Girl”

LIVE SESSION: The Specials – “Hey Little Rich Girl”.

The Specials performing “Hey Little Rich Girl” live in Japan 1980.

July 1980 saw the band head off to Japan for the first time, but the frenzied crowd reaction in Osaka got them in trouble with the police. At that time, standing at a concert was against the law in Japan, but as was usual for a Specials show, the crowd went wild and invaded the stage. The police were called in and arrested manager Rick Rogers and the club manager, and the band were told to stay in their hotel. The second Osaka show was canceled, but they dutifully played the other couple of shows on the tour and returned home.

“O Superman (For Massenet)” is a 1981 song by experimental performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson. Part of the larger work United States, “O Superman,” a half-sung, half-spoken, almost minimalist piece unexpectedly rose to #2 on the UK Singles Charts in 1981. Prior to the success of this song, Anderson was little known outside the art world.”

UNDER THE RADAR: Brian Eno & David Byrne – “Strange Overtones”

UNDER THE RADAR: Brian Eno & David Byrne – “Strange Overtones”.

Song taken from the album Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008)

The musical reunion between David Byrne and Brian Eno comes with a fair amount of baggage. After all, they produced some of the greatest records in rock history: the trio of Talking Heads records that Eno worked on, culminating in Remain in Light, and followed by the duo’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, where all manner of Afro-funky beats and freaky sampladelic rhythms were wedded to Pentecostal exorcisms and ceremonial bush chants.

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is a nearly 180-degree turn from the duo’s collective musical past. These 11 songs are loopy pop tunes that wed Byrne’s strange hearing of gospel and folk to Eno’s continually evolving rhythmic and electronic palette — they refer to it as “folk-electronic-gospel.”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: VISAGE – “Fade To Grey”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: VISAGE – “Fade To Grey”.

Visage’s sole hit single and their signature track, 1980′s “Fade To Grey” is one of the definitive New Romantic songs. After all, Visage was notoriously formed by scenester extraordinaire Steve Strange, a non-musician who claimed that he formed the band simply as an excuse to take some really fabulous publicity shots.

That conceit (which wasn’t true; an early version of the band existed as far back as the grimy post-punk days of 1978) aside, Visage made some genuinely interesting, atmospheric synth-pop records, with “Fade To Grey” one of the two pinnacles, alongside the more urgent “The Damned Don’t Cry.” Freed from the more commercially-oriented strictures of their primary project Ultravox, Midge Ure and Billy Currie fashioned a minimalist, pulsating synth-pop sound seemingly influenced by the artsy likes of Cluster as well as Giorgio Moroder’s electro-disco throb.

Over this, Strange whispers sketchy lyrics in a barely-there voice and an unidentified woman murmurs in French. It’s so ambient it barely exists at all, but the one-line chorus provides just enough of a hook to layer the rest of the song onto. “Fade To Grey” has been remixed several times as new trends take hold in electronic dance music over the years, but as always, the original remains the best.
