THE VIDEO FOR “LOVE WILL TEAR US APART” WAS FILMED 35 YEARS AGO TODAY

THE VIDEO FOR “LOVE WILL TEAR US APART” WAS FILMED 35 YEARS AGO TODAY.

“Love Will Tear Us Apart—the cynical and tongue in cheek retort to the Neil Sedaka song “Love Will Keep Us Together” made famous by Captain and Tennille, had it’s video shot 35 years ago today. The song’s lyrics, in retrospect, were an obvious reference to singer Ian Curtis’ failing marriage.

The members of Joy Division filmed the video themselves on April 28th, 1980 during a rehearsal at T.J. Davidson’s studio, where the band had previously rehearsed earlier in their career. In the intro to the video the door that opens and shuts has “Ian C” carved into it; reportedly this was the beginning of an abusive message (the rest later erased) carved into the door by a spurned ex-girlfriend of Curtis’ during the band’s earlier work at the studio.

The video is browned out at points, unintentionally, but nevertheless a fitting aesthetic—along with the omission of Curtis’ trademark dancing, which instead is replaced with the frontman strumming on a 12 string Eko guitar.

This was the only promotional video Joy Division ever produced as Ian Curtis committed suicide less than three weeks after the video was filmed.”

UNDER THE RADAR: Panda Bear – “Tropic Of Cancer”

UNDER THE RADAR: Panda Bear – “Tropic Of Cancer”.

Noah “Panda Bear” Lennox has shared the new music video for his Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper centerpiece “Tropic of Cancer,” and the clip boasts a familiar name as director: Lennox’s Animal Collective band mate Dave “Avey Tare” Portner. In the dreamy, super-slow motion video, a family dressed in ostentatious, puffy panda bear suits are enjoying a sunny day before it is interrupted by a lesson in handling a police attack dog.

“This is one of my favorite songs on the record, hence my being involved with it. I’m grateful and excited to have worked on every moment of it and to have worked with all the sweet people who helped me put it together.” Avey Tare

UNDER THE RADAR: Buxton – “Miss Catalina 1992″.

Houston-based band Buxton released their latest full-length Half A Native in March 2015, having recorded in Los Angeles for the first time and given their psychedelic-tinged Americana a new twist.

The album’s title and theme revolves around the songwriting and background of lead singer Sergio Trevino as a Mexican American growing up in Texas, and as the follow-up to 2012’s Nothing Here Seems Strange, it reveals a particular growth for the band as they continue to create their own distinct sound.

LIVE SESSION: SIOUXSIE & THE THE BANSHEES – THE LORD’s PRAYER Live (VORTEX Club, London UK, 9 Aug 1977).

SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES performing ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ live at Vortex Club in London on 9 August 1977.

This video has been restored by using two different sources one being a punk documentary aired in 1981 and the other the well known “London Weekend Television (LWT) – ‘THE YEAR OF PUNK’ Documentary” that was aired on 19 December 1977, presented by Janet Street Porter including live footage of ‘Love In A Void’ also from 9 August 1977 at Vortex Club plus a backstage interview with Siouxsie probably of the same day.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: THE CHAMELEONS – “Perfume Garden”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: THE CHAMELEONS – “Perfume Garden”.

Song from the album What Does Anything Mean? Basically (1985).

Easily the high point of the Chameleons’ fascination with digital delays, pedals, and making the studio an instrument, the band’s second album still is seen by many a fan as being just a little too lost in the production to have the same impact as Script of the Bridge  did, despite equally excellent songs.

The gentle intro to the absolutely wonderful “Perfumed Garden,” lyrically one of Burgess’ best nostalgic pieces, it rapidly becomes clear exactly which band is doing this.

UNDER THE RADAR: The National – “Sunshine On My Back”.

The National unveil surprise new single “Sunshine On My Back”.

The National have returned with their first new song since their 2013 album Trouble Will Find Me.

At the moment, the origin of the song remains unclear, but based on the band’s past trajectory of a new album every three years, we can probably expect more details soon enough.

According to a fan newsletter, the song is a leftover from the sessions for Trouble Will Find Me. It features vocals from Sharon Van Etten and comes free with any purchase/rental of the band’s Mistaken For Strangers documentary via the official website.
