UNDER THE RADAR: Suzie True - "Rat Kid"

Suzie True are a, “sad girl three-piece pop band”, hailing from Los Angeles. They’re fronted by Bear Cats drummer Lexi McCoy.

This week the band have shared their debut single, Rat Kid, accompanied by a video shot by film-maker, and Lexi’s brother, Bobby McCoy.

Lexi’s vocal, pitched somewhere between Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell and Diet Cig’s Alex Luciano, is accompanied by Dustyn Hiett’s propulsive drum beats, bright acoustic guitars and delightfully fuzzed out bass-lines. Early days, but if this slice of Californian indie-pop sunshine is anything to go by, Suzie True could just be our new favourite band. Rat Kid is out now.

"UNDER THE RADAR: Latitude - “Say What You Mean”

San Francisco's Latitude released their debut album L'attitude this past June, which is a jangly exploration and reinterpretation of pop and rock and roll from the '60s through the 80's led by lead singer Amy Fowler's charm. Now they're back with some sweet visuals for their track "Say What You Mean."

Watch a Young Bruce Springsteen Play Songs That Were Left Off 'Darkness on the Edge of Town'

Watch a Young Bruce Springsteen Play Songs That Were Left Off 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

On Sept. 20, 1978, Springsteen played one of the greatest shows of his long career. Watch it all right here. On this night, the Capitol Theatre clapped and whooped along, drunk on Springsteen’s charisma and Garry Tallent’s pouncing bass line. Watch the Boss freeze the room at the 1:47 mark with a full 20-second pause that all but unhinges the fans from the space-time continuum, before dropping back in with “Romeo and Juliet…”

“Because the Night” was another love song Springsteen had written for Darkness on the Edge of Town and ultimately decided not to include on the album. Meanwhile, in an adjacent studio at the Record Plant in New York City, Patti Smith was working on her new album with producer Jimmy Iovine. Iovine was also working as an engineer with Springsteen, and Springsteen wound up giving the song to Smith, who changed some of the lyrics but kept the structure. Her “Because the Night” became the lead single from 1978’s Easter and reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart—the biggest hit of Smith’s career..

'UNDER THE RADAR: False Advertising - "Hey You"

The Manchester via Oxford DIY trio, False Advertising are set to release a new EP, I Would Be So Much Happier If I Just Stopped Caring, next month, and have this week share their riotous new single, Hey You.

Hey You, described by the band as, “a rallying cry against gender stereotyping”, is built around ferocious, almost Pavement like guitar work, and pounding drums, but it’s singer Jen’s howling, visceral vocal that’s the star. There’s a touch of Shirley Manson, with the attitude and noise of early PJ Harvey, and as she repeats the tracks key line, “I am no figurine”, we’d dare anyone to suggest she’s anything but a rock star.

Raucous, accessible and with plenty to say, False Advertising are more than worthy of their hype. I Would Be So Much Happier If I Just Stopped Caring is out October 27th.

‘UNDER THE RADAR: The Lemon Twigs - "Why Didn't You Say That?"

Rock'n'roll siblings Brian and Michael D'Addario will release their latest effort as the Lemon Twigs when their Brothers of Destruction EP lands later this month, and they've just teased another song from the upcoming record. "Why Didn't You Say That?" further demonstrates the two-piece's penchant for infectiously sunny, melodic pop-rock. The new track is equal parts retro and refreshing. Brothers of Destruction arrives on September 22 via 4AD.

The Replacements share live version of “I’m in Trouble” from For Sale: Live at Maxwell’s 1986: Stream

The Replacements share live version of “I’m in Trouble” from For Sale: Live at Maxwell’s 1986: Stream | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

The Replacements will open their vault doors on October 6th to release For Sale: Live at Maxwell’s 1986 (via Rhino).

The recording was captured on a 24-track mobile studio during the band’s February 4th, 1986 performance in front of just 30 people at the Hoboken, New Jersey venue.

One of the last performances to feature Bob Stinson before his departure, the epic show has only ever been heard as a low-quality bootleg. Remastered in 2007 but not made commercially available until now, For Sale marks the iconic rockers’ first live album to be released on CD, LP, and digitally, as 1985’s The Shit Hits the Fans was only purchasable on cassette.

UNDER THE RADAR: Morrissey Releases First New Single in Two Years, "Spent the Day in Bed"

It's the lead single from his forthcoming album, Low in High School. Morrissey has returned with the first single from his forthcoming album, Low in High School, marking a new chapter in his post-Smiths solo career. “Spent the Day in Bed” is a peppy (a word Morrissey probably loves), organ-driven song about checking out from the news cycle and resisting the media narrative. “The news contrives to frighten you,” he sings. “To make you feel small and alone, to make you feel that your mind isn’t your own.”
