THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Clash - "I' m So Bored With The USA"

“I’m So Bored with the U.S.A.”, like “Washington Bullets” after it, takes the United States to task for its support of violent tyrannical activities around the world, as well as then-recent US politics (e.g. Watergate).

Talking about “yankee soldiers” getting addicted to “skag” during Vietnam with no help back home and “yankee dollar talk” giving orders to “dictators of the world” is a hell of a way to shake an American teen out of his or her stupor.

Combine that with the buzz-saw guitars that jump-start and permeate throughout the song, and you’ve got the recipe for something no one in the US had ever heard before. Had the NSA been pulling punches as they do now, I’m sure The Clash would’ve been high on a narc hit list.

The Only Lyric That Matters: “Never mind the stars and stripes/ Let’s print the Watergate Tapes/ I’ll salute the New Wave/ And I hope nobody escapes”.

UNDER THE RADAR: Females rule in Grizzly Bear’s video for “Mourning Sound”

Grizzly Bear’s new video for “Mourning Sound” is, according to a press release, “a playful, pastel-drenched commentary on women’s liberation.” Directed by Beatrice Pegard and starring Clemence Poesy (Harry Potter, In Bruges), the clip features a group of sternly defiant women dancing their way through a luxurious mansion. There’s the take-no-shit bride, the race car driver-slash-mother, and the literally bright scientist. You even get some drumming on man butts and rainbow nipple beams, so perhaps the video should be labeled slightly NSFW.

Take a look up above. “Mourning Sound” is the lead single off Painted Ruins, Grizzly Bear’s first new album since 2012’s Shields. Due out August 18th, the band will support the release with a full fall tour.

ETCHED IN ACID: TV NEWS REPORTS FROM SUMMER OF LOVE-ERA SF SHOW HOW GROSS THE HIPPIES COULD BE

ETCHED IN ACID: TV NEWS REPORTS FROM SUMMER OF LOVE-ERA SF SHOW HOW GROSS THE HIPPIES COULD BE | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

The Bay Area’s CBS affiliate, KPIX, aired special reports on the hippie phenomenon in 1967: “The Maze: Haight/Ashbury,” a tour of the burgeoning neighborhood led by Beat poet Michael McClure, and “The Maze: Etched in Acid,” a skeptical look at LSD enthusiasts. The music of the New Salvation Army Banned plays under both. (The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Wildflower were profiled in “The Maze: Liverpool, U.S.A.,” an episode that has yet to turn up on the intertubes.)

Peter Hook and Ministry cover Captain Beyond’s ‘Dancing Madly Backwards’

Peter Hook and Ministry have teamed up for a double A-side split single vinyl release where Hooky and Al each give their interpretation of 70s Space Rock band Captain Beyond’s Dancing Madly Backwards, the first track off of the band’s 1972 debut LP.

The Peter Hook version definitely imbues a hypnotic post-punk vibe turning the early 70’s track into something that could have been made 7 years later. This is some of Peter Hook’s best material since Monaco’s What Do You Want From Me.

UNDER THE RADAR: Beck - "Wow"

Beck has finally announced his follow-up to 2015’s Grammy-winning Album of the Year, Morning Phase. Entitled Colors, he’s had the album done for quite a while and has been teasing it for the last year, dropping the singles, “Wow,” “Dreams,” and “Up All Night.” Beck said in a new interview, “I suppose the record could have come out a year or two ago. But these are complex songs all trying to do two or three things at once. It’s not retro and not modern. To get everything to sit together so it doesn’t sound like a huge mess was quite an undertaking.” There is no official release date or album info available yet.

UNDER THE RADAR: Mammoth Penguins and Friends - "The Sailor"

Disappearance, fraud, lies and deceit, they all sit at the heart of John Doe, the upcoming concept album from Mammoth Penguins. The titular John Doe is a fictional character, a man willing to fake his own death to escape his problems. To do this tale justice, the band has teamed up with a host of friends, including Sophie Barkerwood (Haiku Salut) and Joe Bear (Alto 45), to produce the album. That album will be released in October on the wiaiwya label, and marks Mammoth Penguins’ first new material since 2015’s Hide & Seek.

The Sailor builds around the classic propulsive Mammoth Penguin sound, as bouncing bass-lines and driving percussion give the whole thing a flavour of kraut-rock. The synthesisers, courtesy of Joe Bear add some additional textures, while singer Emma Kupa’s impassioned vocals have never sounded stronger.

When Tony Wilson interviewed The Smiths for Granada Reports

The Smiths, and Morrissey in particular made many television appearances during 1984 in promotion of the band’s second album, Meat is Murder. One such interview during this time was with none other than Tony Wilson, the man who regrettably did not sign the band to his label Factory Records.

During the interview, the strained relationship between the journalist/label owner and the man he used to call Steven, is made painfully obvious with the sarcastic introduction. Tony then goes on to make it a point to interview the rhythm section of Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce first, followed by Johnny Marr—who Tony credits with writing all the melodies.

When the interview finally gets to Morrissey himself, Tony interrogates him on the controversial lyrics on Meat Is Murder, especially the LP’s intro track The Headmaster Ritual. to which Morrissey barbs Tony with a grin on his face that he should try being a popstar to express his political views.

Villains was produced by Mark Ronson and will be released August 25 via Matador.

The Clientele haven’t released an album in seven years but that will soon change with their forthcoming Music for the Age of Miracles, out September 22.

The English band gave us a taste of what that album will sound like with “Everyone You Meet.” It’s a sweet, elegant, pop song that’s accompanied by a home-video clip directed by Paul Kelly and shot on Super 8 of the band members wandering around the Northern London suburbs and gardens.
