THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Comateens – “Ghosts”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Comateens – “Ghosts”.

1981 video for “Ghosts” by Comateens, from their self-titled debut album. Filmed in a garage in Paris on almost no budget.

Despite their ghoulish name the Comateens were actually more of a party band. Taking their name from a lurid headline in the New York Post, the Comateens carried the monster-mash torch originally lit by the Cramps and the Fleshtones. Toss in the demented energy of the B-52′s and the Comateens’ sound is complete. The Comateens were formed in New York in 1980 by Ramona Jan (guitar), Nik North (bass, vocals), and a drum machine. After Lyn Byrd (synthesizer, vocals) and Oliver North (guitar, vocals) joined the group, they recorded their self-titled debut LP in 1981.

Like the Cramps and early B-52′s, the Comateens set their macabre visions to new wave grounded in the up-tempo rock & roll styles of the ’50s and ’60s.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Orange Juice – “Rip it Up”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Orange Juice – “Rip it Up”.

1982’s “Rip It Up” single introduced a number of fundamental changes in Orange Juice’s career. The most important was that the band was half-new, with singer Edwyn Collins and bassist David McClymont joined by new guitarist Malcolm Ross and Zimbabwe-born drummer Zeke Manyika.

Glasgow-born Ross was the more musically influential new addition to the band; his funk-influenced, scratchy guitar riff powers “Rip It Up,” introducing a new R&B sound to the previously austere post-punk group that original guitarist James Kirk had never approached. Lyrically, the song is one of several fairly bitter treatises on the failure of romantic love on the group’s second album.

Although the extended album version is slightly marred by a needlessly elongated instrumental break over which Collins practices his soul-man testifyin’, the original single version of “Rip It Up” is a small gem.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Bauhaus – “Dark Entries”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Bauhaus – “Dark Entries”.

Bauhaus’ second single, and its first for long-time home Beggars Banquet (via the 4AD subsidiary), “Dark Entries” rides in on a squall of feedback and percussion, crashing on for some 45 seconds before Peter Murphy finally unveils one of his most breathless vocals.

A raw prototype does appear on the deeply posthumous (1997) Live in the Studio 1979 EP, but “Dark Entries” underwent considerable reworking before re-emerging the following year.

Recorded live in the studio, it was a far punkier offering than the band’s then prevalent reputation allowed for, an exhilarating thunderstorm of sound, its breakneck pace unrelenting even when Murphy launches into a virtual spoken word passage — behind him, the band continues to thrash, with the constant repetition of the title a speeding bulldozer of energy.

Wall of Voodoo’s pulsing, synth-driven cover of “Ring of Fire” is one of their best recordings, and earned the group some early praise.

UNDER THE RADAR: J Mascis – “Every Morning”

UNDER THE RADAR: J Mascis – “Every Morning”.

“Every Morning” is from Mascis’ latest solo record, Tied to a Star (2014).

In the video for “Every Morning” a fictional religious cult called “The Space Children Of The Forest” mysteriously disappears. The Funny or Die-helmed video takes place in 1974 and features the Shins’ James Mercer as a loyal, egg-loving devotee to Mascis, who plays a Jesus-like figure. Fred Armisen, meanwhile, plays his hilariously-outfitted nemesis.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Felt – “Ballad Of The Band”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Felt – “Ballad Of The Band”.

In 1979, the 16-year-old Lawrence (no surname, just Lawrence) audaciously launched the project he would christen “Felt” – the moniker referring to the raw emotion that Tom Verlaine displayed in the lyric “How We Felt” from Television’s “Venus.”

Stains On A Decade is the first Felt compilation to combine their Cherry Red and Creation releases, and the title emphasises Felt’s paradox of being the quintessential eighties band in terms of existence (1980 – 1989) but musically never approaching the cursed “eighties band” cliché. As Lawrence dryly explains; “If you do something against the grain, it becomes a stain, something that shouldn’t be there. As we existed for a decade…” The compilation offers a small glimpse of the Felt world – mesmeric, accessible, idiosyncratic, dogmatic, contradictory, unforgettable, like the song “Ballad Of The Band”, a Dylanesque whinges about fellow band members.
