THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Adam & The Ants – “Kings of the Wild Frontier”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Adam & The Ants – “Kings of the Wild Frontier”.

Song taken from the album Kings of the Wild Frontier, by Adam and the Ants, released in 1980.

This album introduced the new Burundi Beat drum sound. After having his previous backing band wooed away by producer Malcolm McLaren, Adam Ant recorded Kings of the Wild Frontier with guitarist Marco Pirroni as his new writing partner. In spite of the difficulties with the recording, Kings of the Wild Frontier has become acknowledged as an inspirational and unique-sounding album, introducing two drummers, with Duane-Eddy-esque guitar riffs.

UNDER THE RADAR: TV On The Radio – “Careful You”

UNDER THE RADAR: TV On The Radio – “Careful You”.

Song taken from TV on the Radio’s latest LP, Seeds, released on November 18, 2014.

“Careful You” is built from a synthetic bassline that might be more indebted to electronic music than anything this band has ever done. But the song still has that classically huge TVOTR structure, and it still builds up to a world-swallowing chorus. It should kill when they do it live! Sounds huge!

IN CONCERT: Wall Of Voodoo Live at the US festival 28/May/1983 (duration 40min.)

Did anyone notice Steve Wozniak introduced them?

Steve was who put together the “US” festivals for a few years at Mountain View’s new outdoor amphitheater.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Wall Of Voodoo – “Mexican Radio”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Wall Of Voodoo – “Mexican Radio”.

It’s a shame that Wall of Voodoo had a hit (albeit a minor one) with “Mexican Radio,” because although it’s an entertaining song, it forever enshrines the band in most folks’ memories as a novelty one-hit-wonder, a fate this always-intriguing band doesn’t deserve.

On the other hand, it’s obvious why the song was an immediate success; it has the catchiest melody the group ever created, anchored by Chas T. Grey’s unforgettable Casio obbligatos and Marc Moreland’s dopily insistent guitar riff, which continues nonstop throughout the entire song. Stan Ridgway sings the impressionistic lyrics in his familiar adenoidal whine, accompanied by occasional interjections in Spanish, apparently recorded off a real Mexican radio station, sounding considerably more upbeat and relaxed than he does on the rest of this fairly bleak and oppressive-sounding album.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Gist – “Love at First Sight”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Gist – “Love at First Sight”.

The Gist is nom de plume of Cardiff-born Stuart Moxham, former member of Young Marble Giants.

When Stuart Moxham left his post in the legendary Young Marble Giants he created the Gist, a loose project where guests like Epic Soundtracks plus ex-Giants Alison Statton and Phil Moxham would make cameos over Stuart’s iffy experiments.

the Gist lasted for only one album, Embrace the Herd, which Moxham has often dismissed as misguided and negatively influenced by clinical depression, excessive indulgence in marijuana, and no idea of where to go next. None of his unkind words have kept fans of early twee and the early, anything-goes days of post-punk from declaring it a lost classic.

“Love at First Sight,” where a former Giant lets more R&B into his life, plus the reggae-influenced “Iambic Pentameter,” which predicts the subaquatic dub sound of the Basic Channel label and at a ska pace.

While brilliant moments like these are why Herd deserves a post-punk lover’s attention, there are too many directionless instrumentals and too much overindulging to warrant “lost classic” status.

UNDER THE RADAR: Elephant Stone – “Knock You From Yr Mountain”

UNDER THE RADAR: Elephant Stone – “Knock You From Yr Mountain”.

Song taken from the album Three Poisons, the third full-length album by Montreal psych rockers Elephant Stone.

They leap from ’60s psychedelics into ’80s New Wave/R&B with “Knock You From Yr Mountain”.

More straightforward than the trio’s past fare, the track takes a bedrock of funky bass and wishy-washy synths and layers on top sultry, come-hither vocals and some extra groovy sitar. Still, with little bits of scorching guitars and dashes of atmospherics throughout, there’s a certain trippiness to it all.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: R.E.M. – “Cuyahoga”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: R.E.M. – “Cuyahoga”.

Song taken from Lifes Rich Pageant, the fourth album by the American alternative rock band R.E.M., released in 1986.

Another ecologically minded song, “Cuyahoga”, refers to the once heavily polluted Cuyahoga River that flows into Lake Erie at Cleveland, Ohio. The song includes the lyric we burned the river down, which refers to the several occasions (most famously in 1969) when the river actually caught fire.
