UNDER THE RADAR: HIGH TROPICS - "15 YEARS"

High Tropics, fronted by Josh Stewart (formerly of The Ninjas), are emerging with their debut single, '15 Years', and an accompanying music video that premiered earlier this week on Pilerats. "Kinda like old school The Strokes mixed with current day Violent Soho, it's all fuzzy guitars, driving bass and thumping drums. Elegant in its simplicity, 15 Years is cracking debut from a band we reckon are gonna do some very good things, very quickly, on the Aussie rock'n'roll scene." — Pilerats

Today, on a YouTube livestream, Murdoc Niccals and 2D—that is to say, Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn—from the British avatar-fronted hip-hop/electro group Gorillaz sat down with British DJ MistaJam on Radio 1. During their first-ever on-camera interview, conducted in the band’s animated house, Murdoc took credit for the twerking phenomenon and 2D claimed that Simon Cowell gifted him his jeans. The interview is promo for Gorillaz’s forthcoming album Humanz, which is due out on April 28.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Bangtails - "Patron Of The Arts"

Song from the EP "Hypnotic Downpour", released in 1897, Revolve Records. The Bangtails were from Kansas City. These days, the band is considered to be a minor footnote in the career of Archer Prewitt, whom he served as bass player for. This was the Bangtails one and only release, which is a shame. Sonically, they are awash in chiming jangle pop, straight out of REM 101, circa Chronic Town. .wilfully obscure

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Cure - "The Lovecats"

A swinging little ditty from the earlier days of the Cure. Still flashing the pop sense the band demonstrated on their early singles, "The Love Cats" -- released between albums in 1983 and collected on Japanese Whispers (1984 EP) and again on Staring at the Sea: The Singles (1986) -- shows the band experimenting with textures like a screeching guitar to mimic the screech of a cat and falling bottles. But the song is almost like a show tune in its classic Tin Pan Alley arrangement, with tack piano, horns, phonetic backing vocals, vibes, and upright bass being the most prominent instrumentation. It is the sort of undeniably catchy music hall type of song found on the mid- to late-'60s Beatles records. "The Love Cats" contains something like five separate hooks.

‘BEEHIVE’: A NEW VIDEO FROM MARK LANEGAN

Former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age singer Mark Lanegan is on the cusp of releasing Gargoyle, his tenth solo album in almost 30 years, and it’s a good’un. It features, as always, Lanegan’s smoky, whiskey-soaked baritone singing voice, and it continues his ongoing explorations of synth music, which can be pretty jarring to Screaming Trees fans who haven’t kept up with him. Gargoyle is credited to The Mark Lanegan Band, but most of the music was composed by Rob Marshall of Exit Calm and Humanist. The rest is by Queens of the Stone Age’s Alain Johannes, an actual mainstay of Lanegan’s band. The different composition styles don’t prevent the album from cohering; its musical dichotomies are matched by lyrical ones. Lanegan’s themes here are heavily adorned with angels and demons, the Devil and God. The album won’t be out until April 28th, but a couple of songs are available—both Lanegan/Marshall compositions. “Beehive” is represented by a new video, a sad and charming little vampire love story by Zhang and Knight. The song features guitar contributions from Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Go-Betweens - "Cattle and Cane"

The song was recorded and released as the first single off of their second album Before Hollywood, which established their international reputation. Cattle and Cane rose to No 4 on the UK indie chart in 1983. It is one of the classic songs of the 80s. In 1983, McLennan described writing Cattle and Cane: "I wrote (the song) to please my mother. She hasn't heard it yet because my mother and stepfather live (on a cattle station) and they can't get 240 volts electricity there, so I have to sing it over the phone to her. I don't like the word nostalgic; to me, it's a sloppy yearning for the past, and I'm not trying to do that in that song. I'm just trying to put three vignettes of a person, who's a lot like myself, growing up in Queensland, and just juxtaposing that against how I am now."

UNDER THE RADAR: Skating Polly - "Hail Mary"

Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse, the two stepsisters behind the Oklahoma City trio Skating Polly, were not yet born when Veruca Salt were taking over alt-rock radio. (Mayo is 21, and Bighorse is 16; they were 14 and nine, respectively, when they started the band.) But they still got Veruca Salt co-leaders Louise Post and Nina Gordon to help write the songs from their forthcoming EP New Trick. And a song like “Hail Mary” has some of the grand, large-scale fuzzy melodicism that’s largely gone extinct from the ’90s. It’s a very cool song, and it has a very cool and arty video from director Dave Smith.
