The 50 Best Albums of 2012 (Paste Magazine)

The 50 Best Albums of 2012 (Paste Magazine) | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

"We asked 32 different staff members and music writers for their favorite albums this year. They voted for 345 different LPs—representing just a fraction of the recorded music released since Jan. 1—and we’ve narrowed it down to the 50 best. Of course, everyone’s list looks different, and ours will look different than your own. The purpose of lists like these is simply to serve as a tool for discovery and discussion. Listen to some tracks you haven’t heard, and let us know your favorites from 2012". (Paste Magazine blog)

UNDER THE RADAR: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Hope The High Road" (Live at Pulse Lighting)

Singer/songwriter Jason Isbell released his latest album The Nashville Sound last month, which gives equal billing to his backing band 400 Unit. For the new music video for lead single “Hope The High Road” they decided to capture the feeling of their live performances by, well, recording their live performance. Recorded at Pulse Lighting in Nashville, the video was shot and edited by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard. .stereogum

UNDER THE RADAR: Broken Social Scene - "Vanity Pail Kids"

Broken Social Scene released their first album in seven years, Hug Of Thunder, a couple of weeks ago and now they’ve shared a video for the track “Vanity Pail Kids.” BSS’s Kevin Drew directed the rather strange video, which seems to be a commentary on the music industry via a toilet who’s trying to become a star.

UNDER THE RADAR: Arcade Fire - "Peter Pan"

Song from "Everything Now", the new album by Arcade Fire, released july 28, 2017. “Peter Pan,” is a sort of an old soul song trapped in a dub echo chamber and accented with My Bloody Valentine squeals, functions similarly, one more fascinating deep cut on an album in search of surefire singles."

GAVIN EVANS’ MAGNIFICENT PORTRAITS OF BOWIE, BJÖRK, IGGY, AND NICK CAVE

GAVIN EVANS’ MAGNIFICENT PORTRAITS OF BOWIE, BJÖRK, IGGY, AND NICK CAVE | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Now we all have favorite photographers and one of mine is certainly Mr. Evans who has taken some of the most magnificent, gorgeous, and iconic images of the past two decades. The photograph of Bowie shushing with a finger to his lips like he did in the promo for “China Girl” has been used on numerous magazine covers, photospreads, TV documentaries, and pirated for Internet memes, urban graffiti, and even tattoos. Its ubiquity one would hope should have made Mr. Evans a very rich man—but somehow (sadly) I very much doubt that.

Buzzcocks had to be quick because they didn’t know how long they would last. That’s what Pete Shelley told Tony Wilson over tea and cigarettes in this documentary B’dum B’dum from 1978. Made as part of Granada TV’s What’s On series, B’dum B’dum follows the tale of the band Buzzcocks from formation to first split and the creation of splinter group Howard Devoto’s Magazine.

GHOST RIDER STILL ALIVE AFTER SUICIDE: ‘IT’ IS THE HEAVY ALAN VEGA RELEASE FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!

GHOST RIDER STILL ALIVE AFTER SUICIDE: ‘IT’ IS THE HEAVY ALAN VEGA RELEASE FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE! | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

Alan Vega the solo artist and lead singer of the groundbreaking synthpunk duo Suicide who passed from this mortal plane almost exactly one year ago (7/16/16) is not done with us just yet and this is the best news I’ve heard in ages… I had never seen a band with “no” instruments and they were louder than any band WITH instruments. This record is as harsh-sounding for today’s audience as Suicide’s first LP was in 1977! When The Clash took them on tour with them in the UK punk audiences were so upset by Suicide that they tried to kill them—every night! So did the teeny bopper American fans of The Cars when Suicide toured with them. It was not easy but it had to be done. This new record is THAT heavy, if not more so. Get IT now, before it’s too late.

UNDER THE RADAR: Muertos - "Spin"

The video for Muertos’ excellent single Spin takes their vintage garage sleaze and dials it right up – a full sonic assault of feedback collides with a motoric beat and the band’s signature duel vocals. Drawing influences from the likes of Jesus and Mary Chain, The Kills, and The Black Angels, this single marks the announcement of the band’s first long player which will be released later in the year.

SUPREMELY TRIPPY VISUALS FOR THE DEATH SONG TRACK “I’D KILL FOR HER”

Nothing says psychedelia like visual trails. Those wavy lines that seem to ripple away from every moving object often diffuse a sense of both wonder and fear. In a strange way, that makes them a perfect match for The Black Angels’ track “I’d Kill For Her”. Coming from the Austin psych rockers’ recent Death Song album, the track is about the allure of a woman who only leads you down a dark, dangerous path.
