THIS IS OUR MUSIC: THE DAMNED – “New Rose”.

And thus U.K. punk was born, in the simplest but most brilliant of ways, with Brian James’ deathless anthem of nuclear-strength romantic angst untroubled by bad vibes.

As legendary as “Anarchy in the UK” and “White Riot,” “New Rose” is pure disaffected cool, the lyrics just smart enough — “I got a feeling inside of me!/A funny feeling like a stormy sea.” Vanian’s singing carries over and through the chaotic noise of the band — Scabies’ cymbals seemingly even louder than the guitars — for instant singalong appeal. Captain Sensible’s bass completes the picture, the perfect counterpoint for the perfect song.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: IAN DURY AND THE BLOCKHEADS – “Sweet Gene Vincent” Live.

“Sweet Gene Vincent” is a song and single by Ian Dury. Taken from his first solo album New Boots and Panties!! it was his second solo single and third solo release and is a tribute to Rock ‘n’ Roll singer Gene Vincent. It was released November 1977 on the single BUY 23 Sweet Gene Vincent / You’re More Than Fair and there was no picture sleeve released.

Sweet Gene Vincent remained in Ian Dury’s set list for almost his entire career, even after other faster paced songs like “Plaistow Patricia” and “Blackmail Man” had been dropped because of the singer’s worsening health and was played at his very last concert at the London Palladium in February 2000. As Of 2007 The Blockheads continue to use the song in their sets.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: PETER MURPHY - "Cuts You Up"

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: PETER MURPHY - "Cuts You Up" | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: PETER MURPHY – “Cuts You Up”.

The first single drawn from Peter Murphy’s third solo album, 1990′s Deep, “Cuts You Up” was described by Murphy himself as having “a very driving, acoustic quality to it and lots of sort of hooky, melodic overtones to it with a not-so-straight lyric” — which just about sums it up. According to producer Simon Rogers, Murphy brought the song to the sessions in more-or-less its final form — “It was pretty much exactly like the demo.”

Murphy had even visualized the haunting violin part that runs through the performance, inserting a sample, and Rogers wryly recalled, “we thought it would be bliss if someone actually played that line. We got a really great viola player in to do it — and it was shit. He played it great, but it didn’t sound as good as the sample. It didn’t have that atmosphere — it was too moody.” The sample, on the other hand, had an almost celebratory air to it, matching the song’s triumphant edge, and was retained for the finished release.

“Cuts You Up” wound up becoming Murphy’s most successful release yet, reaching number 55 on the U.S. chart, selling over 250,000 copies in just three weeks.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: UNDERTONES - " Teenage Kick"

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: UNDERTONES - " Teenage Kick" | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: UNDERTONES – ” Teenage Kick”.

Teenage Kick 1978.

The legendary British DJ, John Peel, holds the Undertones’ first single as his favorite pop song of all time. One listen to “Teenage Kicks” and it’s not hard to see why Peel is so fervent about it. A delirious summer blast of adolescent angst, the song sports every characteristic of a classic pop composition: a memorable, hook-filled melody; singalong lyrics; production tailor-made for car stereos; and, above all, brevity. In two minutes, 25 seconds, it’s over, and you’re scrambling for the rewind button. In fact, “Teenage Kicks” is such a perfect marriage of teen vitriol and pop savvy, it’s almost incomprehensible that the song didn’t fare better commercially.

Originally released in September 1978 on the independent label Good Vibrations, it failed to chart. Thanks to Peel’s steadfast radio support, though, the Undertones were soon signed to Sire Records, and the song was reissued in October, hitting a decent 31 on the U.K. charts. It is now widely acknowledged as a classic — a pop-punk standard that continues to point the way for countless bands on both sides of the Atlantic.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: MARQUIS DE SADE – “Walls”.

Song taken from the album Dantzig Twist (1979).

Marquis de Sade were a French post-punk band, active between 1977 and 1981.

AllMusic described the band’s sound as “witty, dark and exciting music comparable to Howard Devoto’s Magazine, mixing post-punk and new wave with a drop of funk to produce an intensely nervous, modern, yet romantic sound, often copied but rarely equaled.” Billboard called the band’s two albums “highly influential”.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: BOW WOW WOW - "C30 C60 C90 Go" | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: BOW WOW WOW – “C30 C60 C90 Go”.

C·30 C·60 C·90 Go” is a song and single performed by British new wave band Bow Wow Wow and written by Dave Barbarossa, Leigh Gorman, Malcolm McLaren and Matthew Ashman.

It was the world’s first-ever cassette single and was first released in 1980. Their label, EMI, refused to promote the cassingle because it allegedly promoted home taping as Side B was blank.

Bow Wow Wow are an English 1980s new wave band, created by Malcolm McLaren to promote his and business partner Vivienne Westwood’s New Romantic fashion lines.

McLaren persuaded guitarist Matthew Ashman, bassist Leigh Gorman and drummer David Barbarossa (also known as Dave Barbe), of the then line-up of Adam and the Ants to leave the founder of the band Adam Ant and form a new group.

After a six-month-long audition process for a lead singer, the band enlisted Annabella Lwin. Musician David Fishel, originally from Liverpool, an acquaintance of McLaren’s, discovered 13-year-old Lwin while she was working a Saturday job at her local dry cleaners. The group’s sound was a mix of her “girlish squeal,” chants, surf instrumentals, pop melodies, and Barbarossa’s Burundi ritual music influenced tom-tom drum beats.
