UNDER THE RADAR: Tom Tom Club - "As Above So Below"

In honor of the 36th anniversary of Tom Tom Club’s self-titled debut album, the band has released a new music video for “As Above, So Below.” Directed by Nico du Pouldou, the video features husband-and-wife duo Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth situated on an absurdist beach, where the properties of physics and logic are meaningless.

UNDER THE RADAR: Jamie xx shares video for his remix of The xx’s “On Hold”

The xx announced their return with their first album in five years, I See You, by releasing the single “On Hold” in November of last year. Now, the band’s resident producer/DJ Jamie xx has used that track for his first official remix in over four years. Jamie’s reworking comes accompanied by a new visual from director Alasdair McLellan, who helmed the track’s original video. Like Jamie xx’s remix, his new version is a re-edit of the original, cutting things up to fit the new rhythm with a particular focus on the scenes of Jamie DJing a small, black-and-white house party.

'UNDER THE RADAR: METZ - "Cellophane"

A couple of months ago, Toronto noise-punk power-trio METZ teased a possible new album, the follow-up to 2015’s utterly badass II. And today, they’ve come out with “Cellophane,” and absolute ass-stomper of a new single. “Cellophane” is big and juicy and punishing, just like every METZ track, but it’s also a bit more melodic and structured than most of the band’s work.

UNDER THE RADAR: Japandroids rock out in Europe in new “North East South West” video

Japandroids return today with a new music video for “North East South West”, a highlight off this year’s Near to the Wild Heart of Life LP. Only the second clip of the band’s career, it plays out like a visual documentary of one week’s worth of touring in Europe. There are onstage moments of sweat and raucous, chill backstage hangs, and behind-the-scenes footage from various plane and train rides. As the Canadian two-piece explains in a press release, it’s meant to be a sequel to “The House That Heaven Built” video, which chronicled one of Japandroids’ American tours.

'UNDER THE RADAR: False Advertising - "Hey You"

The Manchester via Oxford DIY trio, False Advertising are set to release a new EP, I Would Be So Much Happier If I Just Stopped Caring, next month, and have this week share their riotous new single, Hey You.

Hey You, described by the band as, “a rallying cry against gender stereotyping”, is built around ferocious, almost Pavement like guitar work, and pounding drums, but it’s singer Jen’s howling, visceral vocal that’s the star. There’s a touch of Shirley Manson, with the attitude and noise of early PJ Harvey, and as she repeats the tracks key line, “I am no figurine”, we’d dare anyone to suggest she’s anything but a rock star.

Raucous, accessible and with plenty to say, False Advertising are more than worthy of their hype. I Would Be So Much Happier If I Just Stopped Caring is out October 27th.

‘UNDER THE RADAR: The Lemon Twigs - "Why Didn't You Say That?"

Rock'n'roll siblings Brian and Michael D'Addario will release their latest effort as the Lemon Twigs when their Brothers of Destruction EP lands later this month, and they've just teased another song from the upcoming record. "Why Didn't You Say That?" further demonstrates the two-piece's penchant for infectiously sunny, melodic pop-rock. The new track is equal parts retro and refreshing. Brothers of Destruction arrives on September 22 via 4AD.

UNDER THE RADAR: Screaming Females - "Black Moon"

Ass-kicking New Jersey rockers Screaming Females were last seen kicking the world’s collective ass with their 2015 album Rose Mountain, one of the year’s best. Last week, they announced that they were releasing a new single called “Black Moon,” but only 24 copies of it were sold at one record store in New Jersey. But now, thankfully, the rest of us can hear it — which is good, because it’s awesome.

UNDER THE RADAR: Bootblacks - "For You (Lois)"

Brooklyn-based post-punk band Bootblacks have been dazzling the world with their powerful live performances since their inception in 2010. They’re the perfect package- punchy records, compelling imagery, unstoppable live energy, and a delicious shroud of mystery surrounding their craft.

Their latest record Fragments is a meditation on life and loss, set to a darkwave backdrop. Over the course of eight tracks, the band expands on their already eclectic sonic territory, combining the dancefloor edge of Xymox with the anthemic power of early U2. Guitarist Alli Gorman channels the trademark delay techniques of The Edge and The Chameleons to cut through the heavy synth arpeggios, courtesy of newest member Barrett Hiatt (The Harrow, Automelodi). Roger Humanbeing’s drums thunder and crack, while Panther MacDonald’s vocals and lyrics are both biting and introspective. .

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Tom Tom Club - "As above so below"

Avant garde video for “As Above, So Below” directed by fellow RISD graduate Mary Lambert. Although that video was never officially sanctioned by Warner Bros. Records, its black and white, grainy filmic qualities and mix of salacious sex and tarot readings seems far more in line with the quirky, kitschy aesthetic of the self-titled album.

"UNDER THE RADAR: Depeche Mode blast off in new “Cover Me” video

Directed by longtime collaborator Anton Corbijn, the black and white video has a stark, futuristic tone. Dressed in a space suit, frontman Dave Gahan wanders through the streets of Los Angeles before taking a seat on a bench with a view of the beach. As he gazes into the sky, Gahan’s daydreams transport him to space.

UNDER THE RADAR: Suzie True - "Rat Kid"

Suzie True are a, “sad girl three-piece pop band”, hailing from Los Angeles. They’re fronted by Bear Cats drummer Lexi McCoy.

This week the band have shared their debut single, Rat Kid, accompanied by a video shot by film-maker, and Lexi’s brother, Bobby McCoy.

Lexi’s vocal, pitched somewhere between Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell and Diet Cig’s Alex Luciano, is accompanied by Dustyn Hiett’s propulsive drum beats, bright acoustic guitars and delightfully fuzzed out bass-lines. Early days, but if this slice of Californian indie-pop sunshine is anything to go by, Suzie True could just be our new favourite band. Rat Kid is out now.
