THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Flying Lizards – “Money (thats what I want)”.

“Money (That’s What I Want)” is a 1960 song by Barret Strong for the Tamla label.

It was written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, and became the first hit record for Gordy’s Motown enterprise. It went on to be covered by many artists including the Flying Lizards (1979).

In the late 1970s, composer and producer David Cunningham was savvy enough to cloak his experimental music in the disguise of a novelty record, at least for a while; his fractured deconstructions of Barret Strong’s “Money,” released under the moniker the Flying Lizards, managed to inch into the pop charts because folks thought they were some sort of musical joke, even though Cunningham’s wit didn’t negate the seriousness of his musical ambitions.

After the international success of “Money,” Virgin Records wanted a Flying Lizards album to go along with it, and the resulting LP was where Cunningham’s cred as an artist ran up against his instincts as a pop satirist. The principle reason “Money” became a left-field hit was that even though the song had been bent within an inch of its life, it still had a catchy hook and, if you wanted to, you could dance to it.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Jam – “That’s Entertainment”.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Jam – “That’s Entertainment”.

Paul Weller is a master of the British vernacular. Written for his band the Jam in 1981, “That’s Entertainment” offers a vivid slice of life of early-’80s England.

The first rule of any high school creative writing class is “show, don’t tell.” On this lyrically driven song, Paul Weller successfully strings together a wide range of specific and concrete images to form the single idea — driven home in the chorus — that entertainment is like art: You know it when you see it.Weller sings a melancholy melody over a wistful backing of rhythmically strummed acoustic guitars, prominent bass guitar, reverberating “la-las,” and shakers.

“That’s Entertainment” was reportedly written by Weller in ten minutes after he came back from a pub on vacation. While many images Weller describes are universal, some are quintessentially British and served to expose many an American youth to English lingo like “breathing in petrol,” “pissing down with rain,” and “not eating your tea/A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls.” His lyrics run from the street poet “Reading graffiti about slashed-seat affairs” to the Romance poet “Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude.

“That’s Entertainment” is one of the Jam’s best-known and has been covered by Morrissey, among others. All the images link up to form a chain that celebrates a joie de vivre, as if the singer has just regained sight, or is awakening, seeing the world like he has never before seen it.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “The Weeping Song”.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “The Weeping Song”.

A standout of Cave’s The Good Son album, “The Weeping Song” is actually a duet between Cave and fellow Underwood obsessive and bandmate Blixa Bargeld, who between them create an astonishing, back-and-forth dramatic tale of loss, horror, and sadness.

“The Weeping Song” takes Cave’s ear for theatrical, almost Biblical imagery and lets it loose on a deceptively peaceful arrangement. Thomas Wydler adds just enough punch to his drumming when it counts, though, while Bargeld’s quiet guitar lines suddenly cut through just when needed, adding to the miniature climaxes right before each chorus. Bargeld and Cave trade their lines with split-second timing, and Mick Harvey adds what almost sounds like flamenco percussion as well.

UNDER THE RADAR: PIXIES – “RING THE BELL”.

Earlier this year, the Pixies released their divisive new collection Indie Cindy and have been putting out music videos intermittently since the their first reunion EP. The latest is for “Ring The Bell” and it was directed by Lital Mizel and Adi Frimmerman, two Pixies fans who recorded a viral video of themselves lip-synching to “Hey” back in 2005. The band met the women at a show in Israel and let them direct and star in their newest music video. The clip for “Ring The Bell” sees them dumpster-diving and hanging out in graffiti-filled abandoned buildings before ending up at a circus-like party in a forest.

LIVE SESSION: Jack White joins The Strokes for “New York City Cops”

LIVE SESSION: Jack White joins The Strokes for “New York City Cops”

One of the best moments in Strokes history occurred in August 2002 at Radio City Music Hall, when Jack White showed up for “New York City Cops”. Even now, it sounds like something of folklore: Julian Casablancas sits on a bar stool, hobbled by a broken leg. The band enters into a rendition of their most controversial song in a city still recovering from the aftermath of 9/11. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, comes the White Stripes mastermind. Dressed head to toe in his band’s trademark red, White proceeds to do, well, the thing Jack White does best.

UNDER THE RADAR: Mark Lanegan Band – “Harvest Home”.

Mark Lanegan has shared a new song, ‘Harvest Home’.

The track features on the new Mark Lanegan Band album, ‘Phantom Radio‘, which is set for release on October 20, 2014 .

Lanegan has said that the new album was inspired by listening to 1980s satellite radio whilst driving around his current hometown of Los Angeles. “That’s the music that was happening when I started making music. And although the [Screaming] Trees drew on Nuggets psychedelia, 13th Floor Elevators and Love, we were actually listening to Echo And The Bunnymen, Rain Parade, the Gun Club. A lot of British post-punk. We loved that stuff. I just waited until I was in my late forties before I started ripping it off.”
