NEW ORDER UNEARTHED DEEP CUTS FOR THEIR OPENING SYNTH ENSEMBLE SET AT THE MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

NEW ORDER UNEARTHED DEEP CUTS FOR THEIR OPENING SYNTH ENSEMBLE SET AT THE MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

New Order delivered a beautiful and unique performance at old Granada Television Studios in Manchester last night. This was their first of 5 concerts with a 12-member synthesizer ensemble—which continues July 1st, 6th, 13th and 15th at the Manchester International Festival The Manchester legends delivered a 15-song set, with the synth players were in two rows of six stacked on top of each other behind the stage—not unlike a modern opera. Frontman Bernard Sumner made good on his promise of deep cuts, as New Order performed six songs not played live in Decades (Yes, they played that too), performing Joy Division’s Disorder for the first time since 1980, and the very first time ever as New Order. The Power, Corruption & Lies track Ultraviolence was performed live for the first time since 1984—Shellshock returned for the first time in 20 years, and not since the Technique tour in 1989 had their been performances of Sub-culture, All Day Long and Vanishing Point . Dream Attack also made it#s return, not being played since 1993, and the 2001 song Behind Closed Doors its live debut.

The two UK musicians originally met up to discuss working on the new Gorillaz album. Rising UK producer Alex Crossan, aka Mura Masa, is prepping to release his debut album on July 14th. The self-titled LP features an impressive list of veteran collaborators, such as ASAP Rocky (“Love$ick”) and Charli XCX (“1 Night”). Damon Albarn also appears, contributing the album’s latest single, a late-night slow jam called “Blu”.

UNDER THE RADAR: Arcade Fire - "Signs of Life"

Arcade Fire teased the single “Signs of Life” earlier this week and now we finally have the song, as well as a video. Directed by Miami filmmakers Borscht, the video features a pair of special agents who seem to resemble X-Files‘ Mulder and Scully that take on the case of analyzing the work of Arcade Fire in an attempt to find “signs of life.” Everything Now is out July 28.

UNDER THE RADAR: Widowspeak - "Dog"

Sonically, Widowspeak exist somewhere in the overlap between sombre indie rock, dream pop, slow-core and their own invented genre, “cowboy grunge”. New album Expect the Best is the follow up to 2015’s All Yours. While previous albums were conceived as a duo, the new LP finds the band playing to the specific strengths of the current four-piece touring incarnation and exhibits a marked increase in energy. Their usual palette of dusty guitars and angular twang are still here front and centre, but now with a bit more 90s homage, even if abstractly. The Pacific Northwest influences creep in throughout, as do varying flavours of New York’s legacy, the city the band still partially calls home. Have a listen to first single Dog, with its self-examination and palpable sense of dread that comes from feeling adrift.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Specials - "A Message To You Rudy"

The Specials followed up the success of their debut single, "Gangsters" with the double A-sided single, "A Message to You Rudy"/"Nite Klub" in the fall of 1979. They had opened their account with a song that borrowed liberally from Prince Buster, now they would pay tribute to the Jamaican born, but British hitmaker Dandy Livingstone. His rocksteady classic may not have made the pop charts, but it sold in vast quantities throughout the expatriate West Indian community and was a sound system favorite. The Specials are remarkably faithful to Livingstone's original, giving it just a bit of a kick in the production and mix. The joint vocals, however, give it a bit of a twist, further emphasizing the anthemic qualities of the number. However, it was the appearance of former Skatalite trombonist Rico Rodriguez and his long-time friend Dick Cuthell on cornet that drove home the Jamaican feel of this sublime single. And with that The Specials took their Two Tone message straight into the Top 10.

MORRISSEY BIOPIC ENGLAND IS MINE TRAILER SHOWS EARLY YEARS OF SMITHS FRONTMAN – VIDEO | SongsSmiths | Scoop.it

A trailer for the new unauthorized Morrissey biopic England Is Mine has been revealed. The film follows Morrissey (played by Jack Lowden) in the late 1970s, before he was the frontman of The Smiths, during his formative years when he was still Steven Patrick Morrissey – a writer – and just meets Johnny Marr. The film is directed by Mark Gill and will be released in the UK on August 4.

UNDER THE RADAR: St. Vincent - "New York"

It’s been over three years since Annie Clark released the last St. Vincent album but it looks like good news is on the horizon. She shared a new song called “New York” that many are hoping is a precursor to a new album. The song itself is far more stripped back than Clark’s previous work and suggest possibly a new era for the legendary guitarist. It still has bite though, with Clark spitting out the words, “You’re the only motherfucker in the city who can stand me.”

UNDER THE RADAR: YUNGBLUD - "King Charles"

Yungblud, aka 19 year old Dominic Harrison has been surrounded by music all his life. Born and raised in a family in love with music; Harrison’s father was a vintage guitar dealer and his grandfather played with T-Rex in the 70s. Spoon fed music like The Clash, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan since birth – he’s been playing guitar and singing since he can remember. Blending superbly catchy lyrical quips, with explosive pop rock-tinged instrumentation, King Charles is a massively confident, and finely executed first offering.

UNDER THE RADAR: Fuzz Club Session: Heaters - "Cap Gun"

During a UK tour early last year, Grand Rapids four-piece Heaters spent a day off in a South London studio to lay down a live album – the result is the band’s excellent and totally debauched addition to the Fuzz Club Session series. This video from the session – a scuzzy rendition of Cap Gun is just under five minutes of lethargic, sun-soaked garage-rock that oozes with a hopeful, lysergic goodness. The reverb-coated vocals float effortlessly over jangling surf rock guitars and a spaced out psychedelic groove, like an utterly cosmic take on Nuggets-era 60s garage.
