THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Buzzcocks – “Promises”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: The Buzzcocks – “Promises”.

Thanks to the brilliant collection Singles Going Steady, the single “Promises” was not lost amongst the Buzzcocks’ frantic recording and release schedule between 1977 and 1978. The song was released in a small window between the group’s first two albums both released in 1978 and the start of their third, A Different Kind of Tension, in January of 1979.
“Promises” is yet another pop-punk gem, buzzing with boisterous energy and gleeful melodies. Armed with a hooky, effected guitar lick and a tale of unrequited love, singer Pete Shelley’s ringing voice sticks in the head with a irresistible sing-song melody while the band cruises in tightly wound rhythms.

The lyrics are very un-punk, following in the footsteps of many a love song with a string of genteel clichés and sweet and sentimental lines, considering the rebellious and sometimes harsh atmosphere of the punk scene with which the band was identified.

Certainly, this approach widened the musical palette of an otherwise narrow esthetic that comprised punk fashion of the day, the band willing to show a softer side, comfortably letting the pure exuberant energy of the music speak for itself.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Siouxsie & The Banshees – “Dazzle” ‌

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Siouxsie & The Banshees – “Dazzle” ‌.

During her youth as a member of the Sex Pistols’ inner circle, Miss Susan Dallion (a.k.a Siouxsie) probably would have stomped any hippie she met into the pavement just to keep her reputation intact. Yet only a few years later, “Dazzle,” the…well, dazzling…opening track from 1984’s Hyaena, is pure psychedelia, slightly recast as post-post-punk art-pop.

The dramatic orchestral backing, which for the song’s first verse is the sole backdrop for Siouxsie Sioux’s newly gentle, almost sensitive singing voice, is straight out of a 1968 toybox psychedelic pop single along the lines of “Excerpt from a Teenage Opera,” and Robert Smith’s droning guitar lines and Budgie’s churning drums create a mood that owes much to the newly fashionable (again) Velvet Underground, not to mention Nico’s first couple of solo records.

A masterpiece of mood music, “Dazzle” is an expansive, gorgeous opener to one of Siouxsie & the Banshees’ finest albums.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Love And Rockets – “Yin & Yang the Flowerpot Man”.

Song from Express, the second studio album by Love And Rockets. It was released on 15 September 1986 on Beggars Banquet Records.

Rich in sonic detail, the neo-psychedelic Express offers a listening experience like no other album — guitars spiral to dizzying heights from beds of sound, arrangements swirl, songs change and mutate.

“Yin and Yang the Flower Pot Man” is ecstatically upbeat, offering a propulsive rhythm, flailing guitars, and insistent bass — a compulsively danceable and bliss-inducing track.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Cocteau Twins – “Crushed”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Cocteau Twins – “Crushed”.

The Cocteau Twins were not a band to be understood – instead they invited you to fly into the mystery.

“Created for record label 4AD’s compilation of some of its finest artists circa 1987 – Lonely is An Eyesore – Cocteau Twins’ Crushed is among my favourite tracks from a band that changed the musical landscape, and have never been equalled. The accompanying VHS release of that album also offered a rare chance to own visual “proof” of this ethereal trio’s existence. The video glistens at you, with the band appearing like aliens in the mist, fresh from whatever spaceship they’d been in that day. Hands move across instruments out of time, displaced from their own creations, as if the music itself has been set free from any form of governance.” Jon Lloyd – The Guardian.

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Public Image Limited – “Death Disco”

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Public Image Limited – “Death Disco”.

John Lydon’s cancer-stricken mother asked her son to write a song for her. Her son’s band responded with “Death Disco” (also known as “Swan Lake,” a different mix found on Metal Box), and she found it to be funny.

The U.K. liked the song enough to place it in their top 20. Hardly a laff riot, the song features Lydon at his most desperate and stark, which says a great deal about a song on the only album fit for being stored in a metal canister – needless to say, Lydon’s mother had a dark sense of humor.

The song is built on a dense groove informed equally by dub and disco – bassist Jah Wobble and drummer Richard Dudanski lock into place on a 4/4 rhythm, and Wobble’s bass throbs and bobs with a simple hypnotic pattern. Keith Levene scrawls and screeches on top, dishing out shards of guitar that complement the rhythm one moment and then shift into horrific riffing the next. Despite the ugliness of the guitar, it’s hardly any competition for Lydon’s vocals.

Over the course of the next few decades, various songs would be referred to as “death disco,” but none of them ever approximated the violence, depth, or bleak thrill of the reference point.
