Boosting Creative Thinking in Math Class

Boosting Creative Thinking in Math Class | Solving Equations by Factoring | Scoop.it
Fourth grade teacher Lana Gundy says that she gained insight into her students’ application skills and interests by having them create their own math problems.

Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

Applying the skills we are trying to teach in such a manner can not only improve creativity but also provide a more thorough understanding of the content. If a student can understand how the equation is created (by making their own) they can more easily understand the deconstruction (factoring).

Solving Equations by Factoring
This is my curation of resources on factoring that my students could use outside of the classroom. You may ask, why is curating information important? It is a relatively new concept, but one that is extremely useful in it that provides me with a compilation fo resources that I can give my students if they need help or practice. Math in general is a difficult subject for many students to understand so if I can help them to break down the language, decode the equations, and by proxy learn critical thinking skills then I can help them learn content but also become independent in that learning.

Factoring Flowchart- except I'd make the students create it
Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

Having students create a flow chart like this for factoring will help them process what it is they have been doing. Instead of memorization and following a procedure, students must analyze exactly what they are doing and why.

The Dead Puppy Theorem and Its Corollaries

The Dead Puppy Theorem and Its Corollaries | Solving Equations by Factoring | Scoop.it
To preface, I normally celebrate mistakes in my classroom as a part of the learning process. But there are some things that really speed the progress of my receding hairline, a large of percentage ...
Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

While crude, this method provides an unforgettable moment for students. When I do silly things in the classroom and make the students laugh, they are engaged in what I'm saying so while it may be slightly juvenile, it is a good teaching tool.

Wrecks Factor, a quadratic factorising game from Mangahigh.com

Wrecks Factor, a quadratic factorising game from Mangahigh.com | Solving Equations by Factoring | Scoop.it
Factorise quadratic expressions to answer the ships’ distress calls and save their stricken crews!
Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

Wrecks Factor is a game that provides practice problems for students, but in an atypical way. This game actually gives visual representations of the factorizations so students have both the strict mathematical factoring and a visual understanding of the process they use.

Factoring quadratic expressions

Factoring Quadratic Expressions
Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

This is a lesson on factoring from Khan Academy that does a thorough job of describing how to factor basic equations. If a student misses a day on factoring they have the book as a resource, but also this lesson so they do not fall behind.

Algebra Tiles - NLVM

Algebra Tiles - NLVM | Solving Equations by Factoring | Scoop.it
Visualize multiplying and factoring algebraic expressions using tiles.
Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

Algebra tiles are a useful hands-on manipulative to supplement a lesson on factoring, but it is rare that student's are able to take them home. This website provides a virtual example of the manipulative that students can change and move using their mouse. Student's can still manipulate the tiles physically while at home, but without risk of loss or damage to expensive classroom tools.

Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

This website can provide a different method of teaching factoring than I have given in the classroom, therefore providing another resource for students. If they are still struggling to understand after my lesson, or if they need a review this website provides a run down of the general steps for factoring.

Elizabeth Schaefer's insight:

The only way to connect with students to make them want to learn is to engage their curiousity. This activity, and others like it on the website, intrigue the student's and make them want to complete their work. This way they are practicing the necessary skills while still engaging in the work.
