5 mobile patient engagement benefits beyond remote check-ins

5 mobile patient engagement benefits beyond remote check-ins | Health, Digital Health, mHealth, Digital Pharma, hcsm latest trends and news (in English) | Scoop.it
SOURCE May 21, 2015 The rise of transformative technologies, from EMRs to wearables, is quickly making mobile devices a very real part of a person’s healthcare journey. Studies have shown that 90 percent of Americans now own a mobile device, and they spend an average of 43 minutes per month on those devices, compared with just 22 minutes at an average doctor’s visit. Mobile devices make information instantly available to far more people, integrating them with our daily lives more than traditional desktop computers ever did. In fact, for the first time, people are searching for information more on mobile devices than on laptops or desktops, according to Google. With nearly all the information in the world just clicks away, patients – especially those with chronic conditions – are advocating for access to their personal medical information at any time and in any place. By having this access, these “consumer-driven healthcare” advocates believe they can fill in information gaps that are

L’Oreal partners with bioprinting company to 3D print human skin

L’Oreal partners with bioprinting company to 3D print human skin | Health, Digital Health, mHealth, Digital Pharma, hcsm latest trends and news (in English) | Scoop.it
SOURCE May 20, 2015 The cosmetics company wants to increase lab-based skin production L'Oreal already grows thousands of human skin samples per year in its labs in Lyon, France — but it wants more. So the cosmetics company is partnering with Organovo, a startup that uses bioprinting technology to create human tissue capable of replicating the body's biological functions. Within the next five years, L'Oreal wants to speed up and increase skin production in its labs using Organovo technology, Bloomberg reports. MORE SKIN L'Oreal will use Organovo's NovoGen Bioprinting Platform to print skin tissue. The process involves identifying "key architectural and compositional elements" of the targeted tissue and creating a specially formulated "bio-ink," or multicellular building block, for it. The tissue is then built in vertical layers. Similar skin-printing technology has previously been suggested as a way to expedite the healing process for facial injuries and burns. L'Oreal's current

ResearchKit, Apple's Medical Data Experiment, Explained

ResearchKit, Apple's Medical Data Experiment, Explained | Health, Digital Health, mHealth, Digital Pharma, hcsm latest trends and news (in English) | Scoop.it

If an Apple product is released and hundreds of people aren’t lined up outside the Apple Store to buy it, is it still an Apple product?

Yes. Yes, it is. The product I have in mind has been downloaded from the App Store and used by over 65,000 people in two months, and the results could impact us over several lifetimes.

I’m talking about ResearchKit, which is Apple’s way of letting people use their iOS devices and apps to join medical studies and send data to researchers.

Internet of DNA A global network of millions of genomes could be medicine’s next great advance.

Internet of DNA A global network of millions of genomes could be medicine’s next great advance. | Health, Digital Health, mHealth, Digital Pharma, hcsm latest trends and news (in English) | Scoop.it
SOURCE May 26, 2015 Noah is a six-year-old suffering from a disorder without a name. This year, his physicians will begin sending his genetic information across the Internet to see if there’s anyone, anywhere, in the world like him. A match could make a difference. Noah is developmentally delayed, uses a walker, speaks only a few words. And he’s getting sicker. MRIs show that his cerebellum is shrinking. His DNA was analyzed by medical geneticists at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Somewhere in the millions of As, Gs, Cs, and Ts is a misspelling, and maybe the clue to a treatment. But unless they find a second child with the same symptoms, and a similar DNA error, his doctors can’t zero in on which mistake in Noah’s genes is the crucial one. In January, programmers in Toronto began testing a system for trading genetic information with other hospitals. These facilities, in locations including Miami, Baltimore, and Cambridge, U.K., also treat children with so-called

3D Company designs stylish arm prosthetics that can be worn with pride | Health, Digital Health, mHealth, Digital Pharma, hcsm latest trends and news (in English) | Scoop.it
SOURCE May 21, 2015 That 3D printing technology offers us a wonderful tool for developing customized and functional prosthetics, doesn’t need to be repeated. We’ve seen dozens and dozens of affordable and functional custom-made 3D printed prosthetics over the last few years, offering people everywhere an easy alternative to the absolutely unaffordable medical prosthetics. At the same time, 3D printers are also an innovative and exciting tool for artistic creation. So why not combine these two innovating applications to make 3D printed prosthetics that serve an artistic function as well? That is exactly what the Columbian designers from Cocreat3D are working on. While by day a typical 3D printing service provider, this new project is taking them on a fantastic artistic road from which there is no turning back. And as you might have noticed from the photos above and below, the prostheses from their Passive Prosthesis project are unlike what you expect to see in a typical E-NABLE
