While the chairman of Tesla Motors Inc. re-purposes the lithium-ion batteries that power his cars for use in homes and businesses, others are working on more radical approaches to the riddle of energy storage — using everything from vats of molten salt to rooftop tanks filled with ice.

Meeting the need for energy on demand is not just a way to cut your power bill, it’s also vital to expanded use of solar and wind, intermittent resources that require backup. Traditionally electricity has had to be used when it’s created.

Solar power could eventually replace fossil fuels and uranium in Japan.It is no secret that Japan is looking for alternative energy sources to replace traditional and less environmentally friendly sources of power like uranium and fossil fuels, but it appears that solar energy is the country’s preferred source of renewable power.One by one, oil-fired plants that once fueled the country’s economy are being shut down.

After the Fukushima disaster, support for nuclear power as an energy source declined. As many as 43 nuclear power plants have had to be shut down following the disaster at the nuclear power plant that occurred after the devastating 2011 tsunami. Since then, solar power has been viewed as a viable substitute.

You almost certainly associate Tesla with cars — very cool cars — but the company has an even grander vision beyond that. Today, CEO and founder Elon Musk unveiled ‘Tesla Energy’— a new business arm that is focused on ending our dependence on grid power and switching instead to solar energy.

The first Tesla Energy product is ‘Powerwall Home Battery,’ a stationary battery that can power a household without requiring the grid. The battery is rechargeable lithium-ion — it uses Tesla’s existing battery tech — and can be fixed to a wall, removing much of the existing complexity around using a local power source.

"The whole country has now accepted that every day, you will be without electricity for a period of time," said Phil Stone, general manager of Star 8, an Australia-based company that opened up a warehouse and showroom to bring more solar power to the country in 2014.

Toshiba a annoncé le lancement du démonstrateur H2One, un système autonome d'approvisionnement en énergie reposant sur l'énergie renouvelable et utilisant l'hydrogène en guise de combustible pour produire de l'électricité.

H2One utilise conjointement des installations photovoltaïques, des batteries de stockage, des appareils d'électrolyse de l'eau produisant de l'hydrogène, des cuves d'eau et d'hydrogène et des piles à combustible. L'électricité générée par les installations photovoltaïques est utilisée pour l'électrolyse de l'eau et la production d'hydrogène, qui est ensuite stocké dans des cuves et utilisé dans les piles à combustible produisant de l'électricité et de l'eau chaude.

The famous Tihar Jail in India’s capital New Delhi has become the latest government building to get a rooftop solar power system. The jail has set an example for the entire city by switching to renewable energy sources of power generation.
Tihar, which is Asia’s largest jail complex, commissioned a 430 kW solar PV power system to meet a significant portion of its electricity needs. The grid-connected solar PV system is expected to generate around half a million kWh and reduce the jail complex’s electricity bill by almost $70,000 a year.

In the run-up to a solar eclipse on March 20 of this year, European tabloids had a Y2K-style field day.

In the middle of a bright, sunny day, European solar panels together produce about as much electricity as 90 large nuclear power plants. Germany, with the largest solar commitment, obtains as much as 50 percent of its electricity from the sun during the sunniest hours. The eclipse was scheduled to arrive in the middle of the day and panic was setting in.

A photovoltaic retinal prosthesis activated by light restores half of normal visual acuity in rats blinded by retinal degeneration.

Patients with retinal degeneration lose sight due to the gradual demise of photoreceptors. Electrical stimulation of surviving retinal neurons provides an alternative route for the delivery of visual information. We demonstrate that subretinal implants with 70-μm-wide photovoltaic pixels provide highly localized stimulation of retinal neurons in rats.

Oscar Vinals has designed a triple-decker concept plane called the AWWA-QG Progress Eagle, which he envisions to be implemented by 2030. Last year, he came up with the design for the AWWA Sky Whale, a futuristic aircraft that he said would transform green air travel and carry a astounding 755 passengers. Now, he has outdone himself.

With his newest design, the AWWA-QG Progress Eagle, he conceives the future of travel as a triple-decker aircraft with zero carbon emissions.
