The historic fog-wreathed prison in the middle of San Francisco Bay now gets most of its power from the sun.The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is reporting that one of San Francisco's most notorious tourist attractions has gone solar. Alcatraz Island, a forbidding outcrop in the middle of San Francisco Bay that was used as a prison from 1861-1963, now gets most of its electrical power from solar panels.

The Chinese photovoltaics company JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. is beginning mass production of a new p-type solar cell. According to the manufacturer, the Percium solar cell achieves a conversion efficiency of 20.4%.

t the end of June, a 6 x 10 cell module using Percium cells will also go into series production. These modules will have a rated power of 285 W, according to JA Solar. After the product was introduced in Japan, Great Britain, Israel, China, and Germany in early 2014, it took only three months until the solar cell went into mass production.

Already the U.S.'s brightest solar market, law makers in California have moved to expedite and standardize the state's solar permitting process in an effort to make it even easier for homeowners to install rooftop PV arrays.

New Hampshire, USA -- If utilities want to succeed during these transformative times, they will need to promote more women to board positions. That is the message offered in new report released last week by EY.

The report, Talent at the Table: Index of Women in P&U, explains that women make up just a small percentage of board-level positions in utilities and links that to the underperformance that those same utilities are experiencing.

EY’s Global Power and Utilities Leader, Alison Kay, who authored the report, said that she was curious to see “what proportion of females were actively engaged at the top of these organizations that are facing the transformation of the sector.”

The sweeping curves and glass walls of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport’s planned new terminal building have defined that projectsince the design was released last month, but the futuristic architecture is not the only forward-looking aspect of the project.

The solar proposal is still in its early stages but is included in the official cost projections for the $826 million airport revamp, which includes the new $650 million terminal on the north side of the property, a hotel and a new Interstate 10 flyover ramp. If it happens, it would apparently make Armstrong the only airport in the country capable of running on self-generated solar power.

“Once in place it would make us a zero-grid operation, where we’re not dependent on outside generation,” Director of Aviation Iftikar Ahmad said.

The German government coalition formed by the Conservative Party (CDU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) is planning to levelize the quote of the EGG levy that would be paid by operators of all power generation systems used for self-consumption, according to local newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine. The EEG levy funds the country’s renewable energy support programs. According to the new measure, which is being discussed in the frame of the parliamentary debate on the reform of the country’s renewable energy law (EEG), owners of all types of power systems that produce electricity for self-consumption, in part or in whole, will have to pay 40% of the standard EEG levy.

Everything has its advantages and disadvantages, its pluses and minuses. So, naturally, there must be a number of solar power advantages and solar power disadvantages too, right? It’s been awhile since I ran down a list of solar power advantages and disadvantages, so I figured this topic was ripe for a refresher.

There are many solar power advantages worth noting. In no particular order (well, perhaps simply the order in which they come to mind), here are some of the top advantages:

- Solar power saves society billions or trillions of dollars.

- Solar power provides energy security.

- Solar power provides energy independence.

If you're super excited about the World Cup in Brazil, starting today(!), it has also been exciting to see that the stadiums would use a lot of solar power. However, it's not very uplifting to hear that the Brasilia stadium, Estadio Nacional, has more solar power capacity than 11 of the countries competing in the World Cup.

Four World Cup stadiums now have 5.4 MW of solar electricity capacity. These include: Belo Horizonte’s Estadio Mineirão  (1.4 MW), Brasilia’s Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha (2.5 MW),  Pernambuco’s Itaipava Arena (1.4 MW), and Rio de Janeiro’s legendary Maracana(500 kW).

Renewable energy naysayers like Robert Bryce ("Dreaming the Impossible Green Dream," op-ed, June 12) ignore the most productive renewable technology (as does most public policy), solar thermal.

This is mystifying as the majority of primary energy is used for heat, not electricity. Solar thermal collectors convert energy from light waves at four times the rate of PV panels and are always installed with storage. A typical residential building in the U.S. uses 20% of its annual energy for domestic hot water, which can be accomplished with solar panels on 80 square feet of roof and an 80-gallon storage tank.

For roughly two decades, the most efficient silicon solar cells in the world used a structure invented in Australia at the University of New South Wales. This week, in a packed conference room at the IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference in Denver, Panasonic gave details for the first time about a new structure that allows silicon solar cells to surpass that efficiency, setting a new world record and possibly pointing the way to cheaper solar power that can compete widely with fossil fuels.

World Water and Solar Technologies (WWST) places of solar-powered water purification units throughout the world, but in particular, in war-torn Darfur, Sudan. Working with the Humanitarian International Services Group (HISG), the company has installed two high-volume Mobile Max Pure (MMP) water filters that use the sun for their power. Each unit can generate up to 3.5kW of solar electric power and provide 30,000 gallons of clean drinking water for the many thousands of civilians living in displaced persons camps.

This is the greenest World Cup in football's history. And the main reason behind its green credentials is solar PV.

Overall, of the tournament's 12 venues, only three are currently equipped with solar photovoltaic installations, although a further two stadiums are soon going to install PV systems.

Specifically, Arena Pernambuco in the city of Recife recently completed a 1 MW PV installation with panels provided by China's Yingli Green Energy. The Mineirao Stadium in the city of Belo Horizonte also boasts a 1.4 MW rooftop PV system built in 2013 by Portugal's Martifer Solar.

Pension fund managers are investing more in solar energy, undeterred by declining returns because the industry is considered a safe alternative to traditional securities such as government bonds.

That’s the conclusion of executives from two of the biggest Chinese solar panel manufacturers, which have listed their shares in New York. Trina Solar Ltd. (TSL) said it’s seeing more interest from fund managers, and Wuxi Suntech Power Co Ltd. said these managers accept returns as low as 1.7 percent.

The photovoltaic solar plant (USF) opened this Tuesday (06.05) morning changed the Mineirão in Belo Horizonte into an economic, environmental and socially sustainable ground. The match between Colombia and Greece on 14 June will be the first ever World Cup game played in a stadium with a solar plant in operation, using renewable energy.

The plant’s installed capacity is of 1,600 megawatts-hour per year, enough to supply power to 1,200 households. The plant was built by the Minas Gerais State Electricity Company (CEMIG), in partnership with German bank kfW and Minas Arena, group that manages the Mineirão.

“The system is made of photovoltaic panels, with silicon cells that turn sunlight into electricity. In the case of the Mineirão, six thousand panels are connected to the stadium's roof", stated CEMIG’s Technology and Energy Alternatives Superintendent Alexandre Maia Bueno.  “As it’s not possible to store all the energy, 10% of it will be used in powering the Mineirão and the rest will be transferred to consumers", added Bueno.

Qatar has unveiled a first-of-its-kind solar-panel factory, saying it was now the largest solar-power producer in the region with the ability to generate 300mw of energy a year.

On Sunday, the Qatar Solar Energy company also announced a three-phase plan to eventually produce 2.5gw of solar energy annually, though QSE board member Reyad Fezzani would not specify a timeframe. 

"It's an exciting future for solar energy and we haven't even scratched the surface," Fezzani said on a tour of the facility on the outskirts of the capital, Doha.
