The historic fog-wreathed prison in the middle of San Francisco Bay now gets most of its power from the sun.The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is reporting that one of San Francisco's most notorious tourist attractions has gone solar. Alcatraz Island, a forbidding outcrop in the middle of San Francisco Bay that was used as a prison from 1861-1963, now gets most of its electrical power from solar panels.

Un pas de plus dans la recherche de nouvelles solutions pour le stockage des énergies renouvelables.
Dans le cadre de son programme « 100 millions pour les énergies renouvelables et l'efficacité énergétique », l’Etat de Vaud alloue quelque deux millions de francs au Laboratoire des systèmes électriques distribués du Professeur Mario Paolone de l’EPFL, afin de mettre en place un vaste système de stockage d’énergie.

Set to install an impressive 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity within a six-year period through 2018, Central America is attracting attention from PV developers from around the world, according to a new report from IHS Technology (NYSE: IHS). This year, total PV capacity for the six countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama is forecast to reach 22 megawatts (MW), up from 6 MW last year. A gigantic leap is then expected to take place in 2015 when PV capacity bounds up to 243 MW, as shown in the attached figure. But it is in the following three years when the solar market will make its greatest strides in the region, with aggregate PV capacity from 2016-18 accounting for a massive 81 percent of the six-year projected total.

It’s always interesting to attend conferences in far away places because of the change in perspectives. At the World Energy Security Forum (whose organizers I advised) in Johannesburg, there was the usual discussion of different energy sources and their roles, but also senior politicians with much experience in governing.

A very perceptive remark was made by former Prime Minister Odinga of Kenya, who, discussing NGO opposition to some energy projects in Africa, remarked, “You can’t have grandchildren if your daughter remains a virgin.” Similarly, he added that Africans wanted to conserve their environment, but not as a virgin environment.

Apple is expected to unveil a new iPhone 6 this week with a thin sapphire screen that is incredibly scratch resistant.

And the company can thank the solar industry for that innovation.

The super-thin screen is made through a process called proton induced exfoliation or PIE invented by Twin Creeks Technologies. With PIE, high-energy protons are fired at a crystalline material like sapphire or silicon and lodge in the material at a depth of around 20 microns. When heated, the ions form bubbles which ultimately link together and cleave off a thin crystalline slab that can be used as a screen or as a substrate for LEDs or solar cells. Hyperion, Twin Creeks’ first system for harnessing PIE, was in development for several years and debuted in 2012.

In a joint announcement with Nevada governor Brian Sandoval, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the $5 billion project will be powered by renewable energy and run at net zero energy.

Sharp Corp., the Japanese electronics maker, is seeking to sell its U.S. solar-energy development unit Recurrent Energy.

Sharp has retained Bank of Nova Scotia to help shop San Francisco-based Recurrent, according to documents obtained by Bloomberg.

“Sharp is considering various options for Recurrent including sale of the company, but nothing has been decided at this point,” spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama said by phone today.Recurrent declined to comment on Sharp’s strategy, the company said in an e-mailed statement.

Dubai: The regulations to govern solar power connection in Dubai homes and businesses are in the final stages of development, a top official said on Sunday.

Dubai aims to feed more solar power into its main grid – currently heavily dependent on gas-fired turbines – as part of its strategy to diversify resources. Once this happens, the cost of electricity for homes may be reduced considerably but it will be finalised once the system is ready to use.

Solar power will help meet the city’s power demand while turning it further away from non-renewable energy sources.

Et oui, le leader incontesté des moteurs de recherche sur internet a acheté en 2014 la start-up éponyme pour la modique somme de 3,2 milliards de dollars. Cette start-up créée 3 ans plus tôt avait dans ses cartons deux innovations trés convoitées. L'une concernait l'optimisation de la température intérieure de votre habitat, tandis que l'autre portait sur un détecteur de fumée et de monoxyde de carbone.

Pour la première fois dans l'histoire de notre étoile, il a été possible de mesurer directement l'énergie solaire à l'instant même où elle est créée.

Une expérience unique au monde, menée avec le détecteur Borexino, a permis d'observer quasiment en temps réel le flux de neutrinos de basse énergie émis par le Soleil et de montrer que l'activité solaire n'a pratiquement pas changé depuis plus de cent mille ans.
Ces résultats obtenus par la collaboration Borexino, à laquelle participe le laboratoire Astroparticule et cosmologie (CNRS/CEA/Université Paris Diderot/Observatoire de Paris), sont publiés le 28 août 2014 dans la revue Nature.

Considering the rapid growth in solar energy development in Chile over the past few years, Suntech’s interest in that country is hardly surprising — there’s enormous potential there, and a government seeming interested in helping said development along. The interest in the Brazilian and Mexican markets is perhaps slightly less straightforward than with the Chilean one, but, nonetheless, the positives are obvious — great levels of solar insolation, relatively undeveloped (uncrowded) markets, and increasingly supportive policies.

ST. PETERSBURG — Keeping a 246,000-square-foot warehouse full of beer icy cold can rack up a monstrous power bill.

That’s why executives at Florida’s largest distributor of Anheuser-Busch products began thinking about getting off the grid with a new storehouse under construction south of Valpak near Interstate 275 in north St. Petersburg.

To help chill the 9.5 million cases of mass-market and craft beers that Great Bay Distributors delivers to bars and stores each year, the family-owned company is installing an array of 5,000 solar panels as part of the roof; it will become the largest private solar power system in the state.

A tender for a new 50 MW solar PV park in Israel will be launched on Monday. pv magazine has the story exclusively ahead of the tender's official announcement.

Israel's Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Initiative will announce on Monday the tender of the Timna Solar Park in the region of Eilat in southern Israel.

The aim is to build a 170 MW solar photovoltaic park, said Dorit Davidovich-Banet, CEO of the Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Initiative. However, "we are now ready to announce the tender of the first phase of this project concerning 50 MW only.

French oil giant, Total targets to build solar power plants that will generate 1,000 megawatts in Nigeria as part of the company’s efforts to address the power supply challenges in the country.

The Managing Director of Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria, Mrs. Elisabeth Proust told THISDAY in a recent interview that Total had decided to focus on one type of alternative energy in Nigeria, which is Solar.

According to her, the company started in many countries in West Africa, Asia and the Middle East by providing energy to the people with no electricity.

SAN FRANCISCO - The University of California says it has made one of the largest ever solar-energy purchases by a university system in the United States.

The UC system, one of the largest public university systems in the nation, says the deal will provide enough solar power to offset 60 per cent of the electricity use at five of the state's 10 campuses, as well as some university medical centres.

Conventional photovoltaic technology uses large, heavy, opaque, dark silicon panels, but this could soon change. Researchers are working on new materials to produce solar panels in order to come up with alternatives to the current panels. What is needed to improve the functioning of cells with a large surface are materials that cost less to produce and offer greater energy efficiency.

The shape of a centuries-old Buddhist singing bowl has inspired a Canberra scientist to re-think the way that solar cells are designed to maximize their efficiency.

Dr Niraj Lal, of the Australian National University,  found during his PhD at the University of Cambridge, that small nano-sized versions of Buddhist singing bowls resonate with light in the same way as they do with sound, and he's applied this shape to solar cells to increase their ability to capture more light and convert it into electricity.

La construction de la centrale est prévue pour débuter en septembre 2014 pour s'achever 8 mois plus tard, en avril 2015.

A new way to control the growth of crystalline materials called perovskites could lead to commercial solar cells that hit a sweet spot of high performance and low cost. Although individual perovskite cells have achieved promising results in the lab, until now it hasn’t been clear how they might be made in uniform batches.

Certain perovskites can harvest the energy of sunlight very efficiently because they strongly absorb both visible and infrared light. And unlike silicon films, which are made at high temperatures, perovskite films can be made from solution at much lower temperatures.

The University of Queensland and First Solar have begun construction on a 3.275 megawatt solar photovoltaic research facility at UQ’s Gatton campus.

It will be the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) research facility in the southern hemisphere and support innovation in Australia’s renewable energy industry by providing world-leading research on large-scale solar power systems.

“The researchers using this facility will provide new insights on integrating large-scale renewable power plants with conventional electricity grids,” said UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj.

Nous sommes « dans le rouge » et nous entrons en situation de déficit écologique, selon les données recensées par le Global Footprint Network, une organisation internationale de recherche environnementale a signalé le WWF.

Ainsi, le 19 août dernier, l'humanité a dépassé son quota en ressources naturelles pour l'année, soit un jour plus tôt qu'en 2013. 
Tous les ans, l'ONG Global Footprint Network calcule « le jour du dépassement » : la date à laquelle l'empreinte écologique de l'humanité dépasse la biocapacité de la planète à savoir sa capacité à reconstituer les ressources de la planète et à absorber les déchets, y compris le CO2. Cette date symbolise un budget disponible épuisé pour l'année.

Scientists at Michigan State University announced this week the creation of a “transparent luminescent solar concentrator” that could turn windows and even cellphone screens into solar-power generators.

This technology could mean that one day entire skyscrapers might be able to generate solar power without blocking out light or ruining tenants' views.

The material works by absorbing light in the invisible spectrum (ultraviolet and near infrared) and then re-emitting it in the infrared. The infrared light is then channeled to the edge of the clear surface, where thin strips of photovoltaic cells generate the power.
