A Digital Citizenship Survival Kit

A Digital Citizenship Survival Kit | SoHo Int Technology046 | Scoop.it

"It’s a simple little prop I use when teaching Digital Citizenship to our pK-12 Aurora Huskies students, but I think it sends a powerful message. I love utilizing props to try to get my point across to students and thought that creating a kit full of props would be a great way to reinforce a very important topic in our schools."

Awesome! Love the "props" teachers can use when teaching digital citizenship!

Melissa Marshall's curator insight, August 27, 2014 10:34 PM

This is a great idea - a kit of props to help the message sink in! Some of the props used are:

- a padlock: to symbolise keeping data safe - who will you unlock your life and details to?

- a tube of toothpaste: like what you post online, once it is out it is almost impossible to out it all back in the tube!

- a permanent marker: everything that you put online is permanent—even if you hit the delete button after posting.

Maybe you have a few other suggestions that might be useful to add to a survival toolkit!

Bitsbox Debuts Monthly Coding Projects That Teach Kids To Build Simple Apps

Bitsbox Debuts Monthly Coding Projects That Teach Kids To Build Simple Apps | SoHo Int Technology046 | Scoop.it

Next week, Bitsbox is going to launch a Kickstarter campaign to take its service to the next level. While the website is free to use, the business that Lininger and fellow ex-Googler Aidan Chopra, also previously of SketchUp, are building is a subscription-based “box of the month” club.

The boxes will include an activity book with over a dozen apps to build.

The boxes come with collectible trading cards of apps with lines of code on the back. Kids pick the project they want to do, then go online to type out the code and run the app on the screen on the virtual tablet. They can then send the app to their device or share it on social media.

Protecting your child's digital identity | Digital CitizenShip | eSkills

Protecting your child's digital identity | Digital CitizenShip | eSkills | SoHo Int Technology046 | Scoop.it
Child identity theft is considered to be one of the fastest-growing crimes. Kids’ identities are stolen over 50 times more than those of adults! We’re often so focused protecting our kids from so many threats in the real world; we forget that in cyberspace bad guys are stealing children’s identities to open credit cards, apply for loans, rent homes and even receive health care. Bad guys make money by selling and reselling the same child’s identity over and over. And they get away with it because parents don’t think about monitoring their son or daughter’s identity.

Why is this important? Children could potentially lose out on future jobs, internships and loans that require a clean background check or credit report—all because they were victims of identity theft as kids. That’s a future I’m trying to help my daughters avoid. Growing up in the real world is difficult enough that I don’t want their digital lives to hold them back.

An important read for everyone who has kids - in the classroom or at home!

Steven Stich's curator insight, December 9, 2014 8:40 PM

Did you know that children's identity is stolen over 50 times more than adults? I had no idea until reading this article. People who steal children's identity use their information to open credit cards, apply for loans, and this can affect kids ability to gain jobs in the future as a result. One day these children will be the future of America so it is vital that actions are taken by parents to ensure that their children are being safe online, and that no one is taking advantage of them.
