Web giants take the leap & invest in their own hi-end original content - Native web TV content In 2012 - TechCrunch

It’s already happening. Tom Hanks TV series for Yahoo. Steven Van Zandt is starring in a Web-original drama on Netflix. House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, will also appear on Netflix, along with other original shows. Yahoo is partnering with ABC News for Web video, and licensing original comedy as well.
And that’s just Yahoo and Netflix. YouTube is spending $100 million on original programming. And Hulu has dabbled with original programming.Making TV shows for the web is nothing new. What is new is the level of commitment in terms of dollars and star power being thrown at Web video. Netflix viewers spend 10 hours a month watching streaming video, quadruple the time spent on YouTube or Hulu. Part of that is because Netflix shows feature-length movies, but part of it also is the quality of those movies and the familiarity of the actors who star in them.

How Ipad & Tablets Will Soon Top TVs For Most Video Viewing

The focus on the tablet as a co-viewing device is wrongheaded. In fact, I believe the tablet is about to revolutionize on-demand video viewing, as it supplants the big-screen TV for a very large fraction of primary video viewing.

63% of people watching TV on a tablet do so even though similar or the same content was easily accessible on a big-screen TV in the same place.

Big screen TVs will more and more be used for tentpole, live viewing – for the types of programming that must be consumed live, including sporting events, awards shows, election and disaster coverage. During these (relatively) few and far-between video events, our tablets will become co-viewing screens, allowing us to comment, rate, and share the experience with others – or to look away when the action wanes.

MTV launches social TV app in Europe - Radio & Television Business Report

Viacom’s MTV, in partnership with digital agency AKQA, has launched “Under The Thumb,” a new social TV app. It will let users watch MTV content on mobile devices, share it on the go with others, and then watch those on-demand programs simultaneously with those friends.

The service, developed by Viacom International Media Networks and AKQA in Viacom’s European HQ in Berlin, is available now as an Android and Apple iOS app. It will initially be available for free, and ad-funded in Europe, but it will also introduce paid sections with premium content.

MTV says it currently has some 2.7 million users of its mobile products across seven countries in the region.

Apple Butting Heads With Content Producers Over iTV

Problem with itv. Several sources describe difficulties on Apple’s part securing the content that would be necessary to make their device worthwhile. After all, people using a next-generation content consumption device don’t want to be told that Fox shows are available but not Universal ones. We’re supposed to be leaving all that 20th-century dross behind.

That’s not to say network & cable executives don’t recognize an opportunity. They smell money, but they’re not willing to bite until they can be sure they aren’t falling into a trap.
