Why millennials struggle for success | The Human Body | Scoop.it
Just because baby boomers have more experience than millennials doesn't mean either generation is doomed to fail, says Angela Duckworth.
Terry Hill's insight:
They are victims of the media's presentations of the world as a paranoid playground where deception is normal and rootedness is a thing of the past. Human life is portrayed as cheap and success is only for the elites so why try.

How sexualizing the body rejects the body

The more the social media sexualize the body, especially female bodies, the more even mere nudity, means sex.
Terry Hill's insight:
It is more than bothersome to watch how the social media portray semi-nude bodies as icons, and nude bodies as arrestable or intolerable crimes. The psychology of the 'hidden weapon' syndrome that floods every aspect of media body portrayal contains its own pathology: limiting total body acceptance from normalization, is not only ethical but economically rewarding. This psychology pits capitalism squarely against body acceptance. Stop the money flow and shareholders will be upset. It's OK therefore, to commodify and objectify women (mostly) if it makes a profit. Total nudity doesn't attract investors because it eventually becomes boring. The tease is the hook for body marketing. In our current Western culture a skimpy outfit will psychologically (and physically!) cause more of a sensual response than a nude photo of the same person. Funny huh?
This phenomenon therefore not only reaps rewards for the media moguls but also unconsciously pushes back the nude/naked body into consumerist oblivion. It, in its extreme, causes some women and men who have lived together even for decades, to never be nude in front of each other even in the privacy of their own homes. Such is the power of the media in projecting norms of body rejection by teasing us only.
Luckily, some policy changes have come forward to allow change; for example, the new laws in Canada that allow women to go topless like men can,  in public places.

Why thinking you're ugly is bad for you

Why thinking you're ugly is bad for you | The Human Body | Scoop.it

About 10,000 people a month Google the phrase, “Am I ugly?” Meaghan Ramsey of the Dove Self-Esteem Project has a feeling that many of them are young girls.

Terry Hill's insight:

Something other primates can't do...develop the concept of ugliness. Vanity is a human construct, and each of us suffers the consequences at one time or another. "Ugly' and 'beautiful' are relative concepts to time, place, and circumstance.

Man has a crack at jogging in some unique swimwear on Bondi Beach

Man has a crack at jogging in some unique swimwear on Bondi Beach  | The Human Body | Scoop.it

Could it really be the start of a new fashion fad on Bondi Beach? A man wearing black G-string swimwear has shocked fellow beach-goers after taking a dip in the Sydney surf.

Terry Hill's insight:

Like anything else, it all depends what you get used to. In this case, unless there are others who join him,  he at least has the singular courage to start a new path. If it was a nude beach, he would be stared at as well. But women have worn less on textile beaches, and gotten away with it, so what's the fuss? Naked is the best disguise. And it's all about body acceptance.
