What Social Media (And the World) Owes to Open Source - Forbes

What Social Media (And the World) Owes to Open Source - Forbes | Social zoo | Scoop.it

It’s a Wednesday morning, and I have just flown into a border town — San Diego, America’s most famous.  I am, in fact, thinking of borders, for what has brought me here is an invitation from a client (LucidWorks) to take part in an event for an open source community (community events =many, open source = been a while).  On the flight down from San Jose, it dawned on me how much time had passed since I last took part in an event like this (a couple of years).  And it struck me, even harder, how distant most of the social media world is today from the vibe, the philosophy, and the working principles that make up the world of open source, which arguably gave birth to social media.

Tips to enhance B2B digital strategies | Econsultancy

Tips to enhance B2B digital strategies | Econsultancy | Social zoo | Scoop.it

When it comes to the B2B realm, the word “digital” is still considered a bit taboo. A good majority of B2B companies have yet to totally integrate digital strategies into their overarching marketing efforts. Don’t get me wrong—some in the B2B sector really get it, such as Dell, American Express, GE, among others. But why is it that so many B2B executives feel that digital marketing won’t help them take their business to new levels? To answer that question, surveying the B2B entities I work with, it’s because some execs still feel that their products or services “are so niche that [digital] won’t work” or “our target audiences aren’t on social,” etc. But these thoughts don’t reflect what’s been shown to work for similar entities. Whether a B2B firm is tip-toeing into digital or has embraced some elements, here are a few good tips and examples that can be integrated so that firms might begin to move away from traditional means of marketing....

The bad news is business is still slow to integrate digital strategy is fully into their businesses. The good news is if you move quickly you may gain a competitive advantage. Note, several good case studies too.

The End of Traditional Ad Agencies | Harvard Business Review

The End of Traditional Ad Agencies | Harvard Business Review | Social zoo | Scoop.it

Open innovation is changing the economics of advertising.... ... while open innovation platforms in advertising lend themselves to creative work, they're also being tapped in the production phase of the business. MoFilm, Poptent, and Tongal, for example, focus on video production for television and web films. In every part of the industry, the open innovation model is changing the economics of advertising by switching significant fixed costs to variable costs and sourcing creative from more relevant and, many times, lower cost sources. Each open innovation agency (and there are many) has its own revenue model, but common to all of them is the basic proposition of expanding the agency's capabilities by tapping the wisdom of a global self-selected crowd of creatives, strategists, and fans. In his research on InnoCentive, the first global Internet-based platform designed to match problems with creative problem-solvers, Harvard Business School professor Karim Lakhani observed that the further a problem was from the solvers' field of expertise, the more likely they were to solve it. Since few companies have the resources to hire the diverse disciplinary expertise found in open innovation networks, agencies will have to tap these networks if they hope to compete on creative output....

Advertising is suffering from the same impact of social media as PR and marketing. In many respects the impact is biggest on the traditional advertising model and this post offers an interesting look at how some agencies are responding. One thing's for certain. There is no going back.

SEO Help: 3 Ways to Perform SEO on a Shoestring Budget | Social zoo | Scoop.it

SEO help and tips for a small business that's on a budget, to improve your search rankings without exposing yourself to a high level of short term risk.... As the SEO landscape continues to change in 2013, many tactics that had previously been low cost, easy to implement and effective are becoming less and less effective. For this reason, a lot of small businesses are struggling to choose the right areas of focus to get quality results from SEO on a limited budget. The truth is that things like comprehensive content marketing plans can be very expensive to execute, and for many small businesses a hefty monthly retainer to “do SEO right” might not be a legitimate possibility. So what can a small business that’s on a budget do to improve their search rankings without exposing themselves to a high level of short term risk?...

Five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter | Econsultancy

Five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter | Econsultancy | Social zoo | Scoop.it

Twitter is a brilliant tool for communicating with consumers and when used effectively can be a great way of building customer loyalty. In recent weeks I’ve come across a number of brands that have excellent Twitter strategies and several that I thought were less impressive. This could be because they were dull, unimaginative or simply weren’t living up to their potential. So to shine some light on the differences between those brands getting it right and those that perhaps aren’t, here are five good and four bad examples of brands using Twitter....

Via Jeff Domansky

Calvin Romeo's curator insight, August 15, 2013 10:53 PM

Effective communication with consumers is an important and vital part for any business or entity to have a successful future. If this step handled with a lack of effort/poorly or if the consumer perceives that the brand is boring it could affect that particular brand being considered at all in the consumer’s decision making process. Also when it comes to the consumer's Psychological process the first part of this step is Motivation which is factors that would compel a consumer to take any particular action or not. This article shows a good variety of examples of business that have used the social media network 'Twitter' to engage with potential consumer and other that have not used it so well.

MARTIN LEE's comment, August 19, 2013 7:00 AM
Being effective and engaging is the goal of every communication. Twitter has emerged as the primary platform for organisations to communicate with their consumers. This article contrasts accounts that really know how to use Twitter to engage their customers, and accounts that don't really know what they're doing with Twitter, and look as though they are just following the trend without understanding it. The article was insightful in the way it portrayed "boring" and "unexciting" 'tweets' with accounts that are not heavily followed. Marketers attempt to engage consumers via different mediums such as verbal, graphic, musical, and animation channels which can all be accessed on Twitter.
Kier Segui's comment, August 20, 2013 3:02 AM
This article states examples of brands that are good at marketing through twitter and brands that are bad at marketing on twitter. Social media a an emerging and very powerful resource for communicating with consumers. Twitter is used by most brands to reply to their consumers questions and updating them on current happenings within the brand. However you must understand how to effectively use Twitter in order to make full use of its consumer reach potential. Tweets easily go viral and what is posted by brands on Twitter easily gets passed onto others. If a company were to get a negative response from one of its consumers than it could potentially damage the reputation of that brand. Engaging with consumers the correct way makes the process of marketing through social media much easier.

What Is A Social Business? - B2B Marketing Insider

What Is A Social Business? - B2B Marketing Insider | Social zoo | Scoop.it

After defining social selling, I realized I needed to take a step back and define what is a social business?... What is a Social Business? A social business places equal value on the needs of its customers, employees, partners and shareholders. This is not all that different from the concept behind one of the first posts I wrote 3 years ago this month. In that post, I talked about a book called “The Service Profit Chain” that inspired a lot of my early professional thoughts on marketing strategy. The basic theory presented in the book was that happier employees generate more customers who create more profit for the business. Makes sense, right? Yet in the race to quarterly profits, many businesses still struggle with the concept. More recently I talked about the many reasons why social business is important and I presented my own roadmap to become a social business including the need to define a social strategy that empowers social employees, activates effective content strategy and addresses the issue of culture....

Taking "Fair Use" to the next level... CratePlayer is a web app which allows you to create compilations of video (and audio) clips coming from all your social media accounts as well as from YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Soundcloud or from any other website (a standard bookmarklet allows to easily grab video and audio content you find on the web.)

While it is not possible to upload your own files, it is possible to apply a visual cover, a description and relevant tags to each collection, which can be set to "private" or "public" depending on your needs. Furthermore you can invite additional persons to contribute to curate a specific collection.

Final collections can be easily shared on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, via email, or can be embedded on any web site or blog.
