How Google+ Hangouts Are Transforming TV Broadcasting - SocialTimes.com | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it
Google+ recently added video conferencing capabilities to its platform. Like Skype, you may have used Google+ hangouts to talk to your friends face-to-face for free using your computer. But have you used it to watch your local news?

Google has started rolling out Google+ hangouts On Air to public figures, celebrities and users with large number of followers. Whereas the original Hangouts were limited to groups of ten, with one host and nine participants, the new version allows everyone beyond the participating group to watch the hangout as a YouTube live stream. TVTechnology: Defining the TV Experience

TVTechnology: Defining the TV Experience | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it
We've come to a crossroads. Up to now, it's been an unexplored spot, an intersection that is attempting to blend the old guard and the new. In one corner, the powerful, long-running powerhouse of broadcasting; and in the other, the impish, unpredictable field of social media.

The combination of the two may offer up an end goal that the professional video industry has long been hoping to reach: to actively connect—and reconnect again and again—with viewers. Whether it's to gather reaction, gauge opinion, develop brand preferences or cement station loyalty, the possibilities inherent in social media are proving to have an irresistible appeal to broadcasting.

Finally, the Death of TV

Finally, the Death of TV | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

Television as we know it is dying, but most people don't perceive yet the dramatic change that is bubbling below the surface. In a stunning report released at CES, Accenture points to a wholesale collapse of traditional TV viewing. The study found that "the percentage of consumer watching broadcast or cable TV shows, movies, or videos on TV in a typical week plummeted from 71% in 2009 to 48% in 2011."

And what are we doing instead? We're streaming content on iPads (my wife watches as much content on her iPad as she does on TV), video enabled smart phones, and PCs. YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes -- and Apple's soon to be launched iTV are all changing the way we consume video content.

How TV Networks can Increase Viewership with Social Media Engagement « Radian6 - Social Media Monitoring and Engagement | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

The term “engagement” has been loosely applied within the social TV industry. To date, engagement has been a sort of catch all for anything that elicits a reaction from fans of a show. For example, there has been a push to incorporate live tweets into shows like NBC’s The Voice and of course major entertainment awards shows like the MTV Music Awards, the Oscars, and others. Strictly speaking, “engagement” is the right word to use in these instances, however, there are two distinct phases of engagement opportunities during the weekly programming cycle of a television show.

The seamless combination of social media and TV is currently missing from the mainstream, but it's coming. Social television currently refers to social media activity when related to a TV show, often in the context of watching a programme and discussing it on a social network and typically concurrent to its airing; Twitter hashtags make the most of this phenomenon so that viewers comment on, read about and communicate with each other regarding what they are watching live.
