SocialGuide debuts new TV analytics and engagement tool

SocialGuide debuts new TV analytics and engagement tool | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it
It’s a shoot-out in the social TV analytics space these days, with SocialGuide, Trendrr, Bluefin Labs and Networked Insights among those companies battling it out across networks, brands and agencies. SocialGuide has launched a new product called SocialGuide Intelligence (SGI), which it bills as the only social TV analytics and audience engagement platform in the marketplace. Beyond offering social TV reports and ratings for different TV shows and channels, it enables clients to “identify and engage with its social influencers and key comments” from directly within the tool.

“We spent a lot of time meeting with networks and listening to them about how they value their social audience,” founder Sean Casey told us in an email interview. He said they came away with two big takeaways. First, social has value across departments at networks, so SGI was designed to work across research, digital, marketing, social media and production groups. “Second, the value of social is not in measurement alone,” he said. “Networks also want to identify and engage with their social audience. SocialGuide Intelligence was built to surface the most active and influential fans for any program or network, and allows our clients to use Twitter to engage directly with that audience.”

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards: A New Social TV Record | Bluefin Labs: Social TV Analytics

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards: A New Social TV Record | Bluefin Labs: Social TV Analytics | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it
Last week we saw explosive growth in social TV with a record-breaking 12.2 million social media comments during the Super Bowl. The trend continued last night with the 54th Annual Grammy Awards setting a new record of 13 million comments – a 2,280% year over year growth from the 2011 Grammy Awards, which had 546K comments.

So what got people commenting last night? The first big spike in responses occurred when Chris Brown took the stage, though much of the sentiment was negative and related to past domestic abuse issues. After that, Adele was a popular topic with people tweeting up a storm during her 10pm performance. When she won Album of the Year for “21″ at 11:20pm, the comments poured in with 489K responses over a five minute period.

Social TV Up-and-Comers to Replace Nielsen as Kings of the Rankings

One more indication that the world of TV is in massive reset mode: the all-powerful Nielsen ratings are being flushed out as the standard by which all TV audiences are measured.

New modes of measuring are taking TV data crunching and analysis to new heights and scale, soon leaving Nielsen ratings in the dust.

We are at an inflection point in TV history, where the mass-market medium that has been reaching into American households for decades (the TV) is now intersecting with the newer mass communication phenomenon of social networks. And this intersection is an explosive combination that will redefine the world of television, as we know it.

Finally, the Death of TV

Finally, the Death of TV | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

Television as we know it is dying, but most people don't perceive yet the dramatic change that is bubbling below the surface. In a stunning report released at CES, Accenture points to a wholesale collapse of traditional TV viewing. The study found that "the percentage of consumer watching broadcast or cable TV shows, movies, or videos on TV in a typical week plummeted from 71% in 2009 to 48% in 2011."

And what are we doing instead? We're streaming content on iPads (my wife watches as much content on her iPad as she does on TV), video enabled smart phones, and PCs. YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes -- and Apple's soon to be launched iTV are all changing the way we consume video content.

Social TV: Massive Potential Revenue for TV Industry, Facebook, Twitter

Social TV: Massive Potential Revenue for TV Industry, Facebook, Twitter | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

It’s interesting to see how Facebook discussions and Twitter chats are spinning off all sorts of related secondary activities. For example, the growing buzz around TV programs has spun off an entire ecosystem of data analytics companies that track what people are watching on TV and how. Trendrr, Bluefin Labs, and Netbase are all doing that, in addition to the analytics provided by Twitter, Facebook and other social networks.

Social TV Ratings: Billy Crystal Okay, But Oscar 2012 Smashed By Grammys - Forbes

Social TV Ratings: Billy Crystal Okay, But Oscar 2012 Smashed By Grammys - Forbes | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

If Social Media sentiment really does impact the entertainment industry, then celebrities might wake up with headaches — and not from Academy Award after-parties.

Bluefin Labs tracked 3.8 million social mentions of the Oscars last night. Trendrr, which also gauges Social TV buzz, had the Oscars coming in with 4.6 million mentions for the show and red carpet special. But according to Bluefin, the overwhelming top reason people posted was to bash.

The Race for the Second Screen: Engagement and Insight

The Race for the Second Screen: Engagement and Insight | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

Tom Thai, head of marketing and business development at Bluefin Labs, a leading provider of social media analytics about television, is well-positioned to observe the surge of interest in social TV measurement. "It feels similar to what was happening to social media years ago,” he says. "It’s definitely early days of this, from a business-to-business standpoint, but we’re seeing a lot of interest. We have three types of clients: the ad agencies, the TV networks, and the brands themselves."

With consumer engagement with various forms of social TV exploding--last week’s “Social Bowl,” saw a five-fold increase in social chatter compared to last year--ad agencies and their clients are taking notice. “Behaviors are being created that just didn’t exist a couple of years ago, and which were quite small last year,” says Kate Sirkin, global research director at media agency Starcom MediaVest. “This year is the watershed moment.”

Stacey Shepatin, director of national broadcast at ad agency Hill Holliday, agrees.

“I think last year there was a lot of experimentation from the content provider standpoint,” she says. “In 2012, you’re going to see marketers wanting to be a part of that. I think you’ll see more and more marketers getting into the space and trying new things. There’s going to have to be some risks that are taken because there isn’t a lot of proof behind what’s right and what’s not right for any particular brand.”

Leveraging social data to understand a TV show’s audience before it airs! - Networked Insights Blog | Networked Insights

Leveraging social data to understand a TV show’s audience before it airs! - Networked Insights Blog | Networked Insights | SocialTVNews | Scoop.it

The largest advertising spend for most brands usually focuses on TV. Companies expend tremendous effort and risk large chunks of their marketing budget to make sure their on-air advertising buys deliver the most reach for the dollar. Networks, meanwhile, are staking their reputation, and putting viewer patience on the line, every time they greenlight a new show.

This process is risky for both advertisers and networks because the current decision-cycle model (pre-informing, optimizing and measuring) relies on traditional metrics (like gross rating points) and studies (such as focus groups) that are expensive, time consuming and not always unbiased. In short, TV placement decisions haven’t been made in real time.

With the emergence of social media we now have access to the world’s largest focus group. Through real-time audience analysis, marketers and content creators can understand the audience around a TV show before it premieres. This data provides insights into audience members’ state of mind, discovers their interests, and measures their sentiments regarding various topics. All this knowledge allows marketers to make smarter advertising decisions and reduce the risk associated with traditional media buying during the upfront purchasing process.

Last May, TV analysts at Networked Insights helped several clie
