How Twitter Is Taking On Manipulative Bots to Fight the Spread of Fake News | Adweek

How Twitter Is Taking On Manipulative Bots to Fight the Spread of Fake News | Adweek | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it
Facebook seems to be catching more flak than Twitter on the issue of fake news, but that didn’t stop Colin Crowell, Twitter’s vice president of public policy, government and philanthropy, from being proactive.
Jessica Kelly's insight:
This is more exciting than the Twitter redesign, at least to me.

Most Americans Do Not Trust News They Read on Social Media [survey] | BI

Most Americans Do Not Trust News They Read on Social Media [survey] | BI | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it

"Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have made consuming news very simple, very easy, and very fast. Unfortunately, the resulting overabundance of information can also make it harder to discern good reporting from outright falsehoods. And so you get the “fake news” situation that’s rocked Facebook in recent months..."

Jessica Kelly's insight:
I'm very glad that most people do not trust social media for news, though I hope they use it as a starting place to find and follow potentially accurate/relevant stories.

I'm still shocked that more than have of us find Faux (Fox) News credible, apparently slightly more credible than NPR.

I would like to see a comparison of commercial versus noncommercial news sources. Guess I could go look for that now... Bottom line is, w/ politically motivated censorship looming, interesting times, to say the very least in the most diplomatic way.

The crux here is that Snapchat delivers exclusive content designed specifically for Snapchat. Some would argue that we don't need more unique news content by channel -- what we need is higher-quality universal news content optimized for each channel. Please share your opinion if you have one. :)

Twitter Testing New "News Tab" Feature with U.S.-based iOS and Android Users | SiliconANGLE

Twitter Testing New "News Tab" Feature with U.S.-based iOS and Android Users | SiliconANGLE | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it

"Twitter has started testing a new “News tab” feature with users of its Android and iOS apps in the United States...According to reports, the tab offers a list of curated tweets from mainstream media companies which highlight news that Twitter thinks a particular user may be interested in...This new service apparently isn’t part of Twitter’s Project Lightning, a service that curated content on live events...It’s not clear whether Project Lightning remains ongoing, has been canceled, or will somehow be integrated into this new News tab offering at some date in the future.

A new study from the Pew Research Center and Knight Foundation finds that more Americans of all ages, races, genders, education levels, and incomes are using Twitter and Facebook to consume news.
Jessica Kelly's insight:

This study does not surprise, right? I've built lists in both Twitter and Facebook that aggregate daily news from reliable sources, and I use them as starting points for news daily. I do use Facebook for this more often than Twitter, but that's only because most news-reading is part of my personal (vs. work) time, and I spend more personal time on Facebook, using Twitter more for up-to-the-second professional tasks.

OK, so did I also mention that FB killed its smart News list earlier this week, wiping out the g'zillion sources from which I was curating news for personal consumption? Well, I rebuilt it, and while I'm 99% sure my sources are 100% credible, I'll be interested to see what the outside fact checkers say. Go Snopes!
