Why LinkedIn Will Make You Hate Microsoft Word

Why LinkedIn Will Make You Hate Microsoft Word | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it
The two companies envision a world where someone’s always bothering you while you’re writing.
Jessica Kelly's insight:
NYT: "If Microsoft has its way, the vast membership of LinkedIn, the business networking site with more than 433 million members, will be instantly available to you while you use Microsoft products..." [So in essence,] "the two companies envision a world where someone’s always bothering you while you’re writing."

Microsoft describes this possible experience as "delightful," but I'd have to agree w/NYT:

"'Delightful' is not the first adjective that comes to mind here, or even the 10th. If I’m working in Word, I can’t see why I’d welcome the intrusion of even a close friend, let alone a bot telling me about a stranger pulled from LinkedIn’s database."

Did Linkedin Throw Out the Baby with the Bath Water? | Convince and Convert

Did Linkedin Throw Out the Baby with the Bath Water? | Convince and Convert | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it
In its aggressive move to become a content marketing platform, has LinkedIn moved away from the core social functionality that made it work? And is it better today, or worse?
Jessica Kelly's insight:

This post contains an interesting statement from Jay Baer, who says he never sends a LinkedIn request to someone he doesn't know. I guess it depends on how you define knowing someone, but I regularly do send connection invites to people I know only as Twitter followers, especially if we work in similar or complementary fields. I may also endorse someone I haven't worked with directly just by looking at how they use social media. The only thing I won't do without a deeper relationship is write a recommendation. To me, this makes sense -- I to offer professional connection when I think it could be mutually beneficial professionally --  but I do get Jay's point.

LinkedIn Adds Robust Analytics for Content Marketers | SocialTimes | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it
As part of the shift toward becoming a content destination, LinkedIn recently launched a suite of analytics to give publishers on its site more information about their readers.
Jessica Kelly's insight:

"Until this point, LinkedIn content analytics were limited to a content marketing score for B2B marketers, and some information on trending content. The new analytics provide content marketers with demographic data on their readers, with breakdowns for industries, job titles, locations, and traffic sources." Click through for all the details.

Social Media Update 2014 | Pew Research Internet Project

Social Media Update 2014 | Pew Research Internet Project | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it
While Facebook remains the most popular social media site, other platforms — like LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter — saw higher rates of growth over the past year. In 2014, 52% of online adults used two or more social media sites, up from 42% in 2013.
Jessica Kelly's insight:

So in a nutshell, FB growth has slowed, but user engagement has grown. Conversely, other platforms (LI, Pin, Insta, Tw) show more growth but stagnant engagement numbers. Me, I'd rather see engagement -- basic body counts aren't terribly meaningful.

LinkedIn Has Quietly Rolled Out a Follow Button to Millions of Members | ReadWrite

LinkedIn Has Quietly Rolled Out a Follow Button to Millions of Members | ReadWrite | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it

"A gigantic change is quietly sweeping through LinkedIn. Millions of members now have a "Follow" button, a feature that promises to transform how we think about our interactions on the professional network."

Jessica Kelly's insight:

OK, so yes, the ability to follow people w/whom you can't or don't want to connect is new and interesting, but I think the most important thing in this mix is the reinstatement of the activity feed, which LI also did recently (and quietly). You'll see it referenced here when the author directs you to the drop-down near the Connect button -- voila, it's the old activity feed that used to appear on all of our profile pages, the old activity feed you used to use to get to know  your connections (and potential connections) better. If you want to share your activity feed link so people can get to it quickly, know that the URL is long and ugly -- and so I'd recommend shortening it. Here's mine: http://bit.ly/lijjkelly

LinkedIn "Finally" Redesigns Ugly Messaging Service | Digiday

LinkedIn "Finally" Redesigns Ugly Messaging Service | Digiday | SocialMoMojo Web | Scoop.it
The social network for professionals finally updates its inbox.
Jessica Kelly's insight:

I completely agree that the interface was "clunky" and "ugly"--difficult just to see what you've responded to, etc. I'm completely flummoxed that a social network for professionals feels the need to add GIFs, emojis, and stickers--things that will likely be defined as "ugly" very soon. Exactly how this serves the demo is beyond me, but I'm sure a highly paid consultant recommended it strongly. :>
