Edelman’s second annual brandshare study revealed brands are failing to develop mutually beneficial relationships with consumers.

This interesting consumer marketing study by Edelman is focused on the value exchange between brands and people, exploring whether people believe it exists and how it can add value to a brand.

 

Key Themes:
- there is little value for the consumer in the current value exchange;
- emotional and rational needs are merging;
- meeting societal needs delivers real business value.

The average consumer mentions specific brands over 90 times per week in conversations with friends, family and co-workers, and shoppers trust Facebook (68%) more than blogs (63%) and retail websites (63%).

 

And while social media overall is deemed a better source of recommendations than other channels, such as email, Pinterest (56%), YouTube (51%) and Twitter (41%) are seen as less reliable than Facebook.

- Mike never loses sight of his iPhone (he's always connected)

- He’s very opinionated and not afraid to share his opinion using his social media channels (whether good or bad).

- He doesn’t trust advertising and only connects with brands that he feels are authentic and stand for higher purpose (value conscious and seeks authenticity)

- He publicly admits to showrooming and has been conditioned to expect everything immediately and now (require immediacy).
