Why Can't We Sell Charity Like We Sell Perfume?

Why Can't We Sell Charity Like We Sell Perfume? | Socially Responsible Mama | Scoop.it
What if we let philanthropies operate like businesses? Let them pay for talent, advertise aggressively to build market share—even build a stock market for charity. Maybe then capitalism could finally save the world, writes Dan Pallotta.

Future Brand Superstars Will Align Consumer Values With Household Budgets - Forbes

Future Brand Superstars Will Align Consumer Values With Household Budgets - Forbes | Socially Responsible Mama | Scoop.it
“Social enterprises” are those companies that attempt to go beyond the 5% slingshot and help us align our 95% with our 5%. Green tech and clean tech, fair trade goods,“upcycled” clothing, slow food (as in the opposite of fast food), organic produce and the “buy local” movement are all examples of growing efforts to help consumers align their 95% of expenditures with the values they normally express through their 5% in charitable giving. Surveys show that young people in particular want to buy from these companies, they want to work for these companies and they want to start these companies.

So why don’t we all just switch, and spend all our money at social enterprises?

Normally, the trade-off for socially-beneficial purchases is either price or convenience. T-shirts made from organic cotton cost more than other t-shirts. Buying organic baby carrots in bulk and packaging them into reusable cloth snack packs is more expensive AND takes longer than buying baby carrots wrapped in extra plastic that you can just grab and throw into a lunch box. Walking or biking to the train station may be a lot greener and even cheaper than driving and parking downtown, but it means we are on someone else’s schedule and can’t come and go entirely as we please (and of course, let’s acknowledge that many areas don’t even have a working public transportation system as an option, like where I grew up in the south suburbs of Dayton, OH).

The long-term imperative, then, for social enterprises and for society as a whole, is to make the socially-beneficial option just as convenient and just as cost-effective as the wasteful option.

The Evolution of Dad

The Evolution of Dad | Socially Responsible Mama | Scoop.it

"It's Father's Day this Sunday and we recommend The Evolution of Dad. The Evolution of Dad is a thought-provoking documentary about what it means to be an involved, contemporary American father. Following the personal journey of filmmaker and dad, Dana H. Glazer, the film explores how fatherhood has evolved over time, what its impact has been on family and society; and lastly, how fatherhood will likely continue to evolve."

Green fatigue?

Green fatigue? | Socially Responsible Mama | Scoop.it

As a collaborative consumption entrepreneur myself, this insight on how to market to consumers is extremely helpful:

'That is not to say people are not community-minded and they don't value the glow of being part of something meaningful, but the 'do the green thing' message is not always the best way to get people in.
''Cost, convenience and choice are still massive decision drivers.''
Consumers will adopt green behaviours when they can see their actions having an effect, sustainability experts say.

Hedge-Fund Billionaire Moves Into Full-Time Philanthropy - Philanthropy Today - The Chronicle of Philanthropy- Connecting the nonprofit world with news, jobs, and ideas | Socially Responsible Mama | Scoop.it

John Arnold, a former Enron trader who has earned billions of dollars on the natural-gas market as the head of hedge fund Centaurus, announced Wednesday that he was winding down the firm to focus full time on philanthropy, Reuters reports.

[Editor's note: Personally, I don't like celebrating people who earn their money through...less than philanthropic means...and then decide to change their ways. I'd rather celebrate those who earn their money through sustainable, fair, responsible practices.]

Yes, agreed. I wouldn't turn down the money for a charity, but I do wonder how many philanthropists or fundraisers give it all up, having 'seen the light', for a career in hedge funds. Yes, thought so. Not too many. I believe that says something about the people who travel in the other direction. Forgive, but don't forget.

Better than organic | Socially Responsible Mama | Scoop.it

We tend to think of organic cotton as the "greenest" resource for clothing, but all cotton is a water hog. Time to look beyond the obvious solutions so that available water can be used to grow food for a growing global population. Great, thought-provoking perspective.
