Celebrating Literacy in the Library and Inviting Participation

Celebrating Literacy in the Library and Inviting Participation | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"How do you invite a participatory culture in your library? For me, this is a term that is an embedded part of my philosophy. I strive to find ways for students to have multiple opportunities to connect, participate, collaborate, and create in the media center throughout the year. [...]

After several impromptu conversations with parents and teachers recently, I’ve come to value the power of library sponsored literacy contests and reading promotions."

New Timberlands school will have public library branch - The City of Red Deer

"“This is a great opportunity for partnership in our community,” said Mayor Morris Flewwelling. “The library will be a great resource for students, and provide a gathering space for the community to use and to enjoy the programs offered by the public library board.”

A public library branch will create stronger connections in the community and emphasize the importance of literacy and education in the community, said Lawrence Lee, Board Chair of the Red Deer Public School Board."

What’s In Your Window?

What’s In Your Window? | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

Has your community been slow to acknowledge your library’s presence on social media outlets? Where Twitter and Foursquare are concerned, it’s quite possible that patrons simply aren’t yet using those applications. Now, say my library serves a community of 40,000. My Facebook page shows 27 friends and one of them is my mother. In this scenario, it’s a safe bet that my patrons don’t know the library is there. So, how can I let library users and passersby know where they can find the library on social networks? Apparently, I can put it in the window. Big and blue, bearing our URL, for all to read from the sidewalk or from their seat on the bus.

Bridges over the digital divide #libraries

Bridges over the digital divide #libraries | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"Libraries have been playing a key role in reducing isolation and improving job prospects among those with no internet access, writes David Batty."

"At a time when many local authorities have cut back on their library services, Brighton & Hove city council has made them central to improving its performance and the experience of service users.

The Council Connect project provides local residents who lack internet access or online skills with information technology training and support. This is aimed at enabling them to use other local authority services online more easily and develop skills useful for employment and in their personal lives.

The project began last year to bridge the divide between web-savvy local residents who save time and money by going online to pay council bills, resolve enquiries or arrange services, rather than visiting council offices, and those with no internet access or skills.

The council noted that the latter often live in more deprived communities or belong to more marginalised social groups, such as older people, those with mental health problems, unemployed people and some ethnic minorities."

"Bar Rayon’s library [Ukraine] is one of approximately 1,800 that will receive public access computers, training, and support from the Bibliomist program. Currently, the library is a hub for the community to share expertise and to keep up to date on new opportunities. The librarians use the computers to search for grant opportunities and post them on a community blog."

How Libraries Are About More Than Books

How Libraries Are About More Than Books | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"So the question, and it's a huge question, is, 'What even is a library anymore?'" said Cesar Pelli, the world-renowned architect and designer of the Minneapolis Central Library.

While this large urban library has greater resources than many of its suburban and rural counterparts -- the building itself, which opened in 2006, cost some $138 million -- librarians across the country are looking to institutions such as this to show the way forward. For their part, the librarians here say their hope is that this library can be more of a cultural center than a book repository."

'Super library' opens its doors

'Super library' opens its doors | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"Architect Piers Gough, of CZWG Architects, said: "The brief was to put rather a large library on a rather small site. Hence we designed a building that leans out in every direction so we are able to have one library floor above really quite a small footprint on the ground.

"It's integrated with the Underground so the Tube station entrance is actually part of this building. You can come out of the Tube and borrow a book."

Part of the library world

Part of the library world | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"On Wednesday, November 23, a small statue disappeared from the front of the Juan Tabo library. It depicted a boy reading, and its name was Shaun, after the grandson of the artist, Rebecca Stover, who made and donated it. [...] Libraries aren't just the sum of their functions. They're also places that people develop emotional attachments to, places that are part of the community. Juan Tabo had Shaun; we still have our blue and gold dinosaur and our puppet show and our ever-growing rogue's gallery of stuffed animals. Cherry Hills has Clifford, reigning from atop the children's shelves, and the puzzle piece floor mats. These gifts from our friends have found homes, and brought happiness both to children and to adults."

Things To Do – Completely Transform the Library | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

So a few days back I wrote up a little post that set off a few people, got some nice comments, and generated a tiny bit of buzz. Basically I asked a question, which I thought was a fair question, "“What are libraries going to do when most everything is delivered digitally?”
