The Joe & Rika Mansueto Library

The Joe & Rika Mansueto Library | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

Just when you think books are on their way out, the University of Chicago builds a new library that can hold 3.5 million volumes and deliver your requested book within minutes. [...] The domed, 700-glass-panel reading room measuring around 8,000 square feet, pops up from the lawn, while underground, extending 50 feet deep, is a hi-tech automated storage and retrieval system that uses five mechanized robotic cranes, in conjunction with bar codes on the books, to retrieve any title quickly from the 24,000 metal bins used to store the books in optimal preservation conditions.

"San Diego County Library’s $11-million, 19,000-square-foot Fallbrook branch is the recipient of a People’s Choice Orchid Award in the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s annual Orchids and Onions competition highlighting good (and bad) building design. The online nominations are awarded by a jury of architects through an annual competition that also encourages community involvement. The branch achieved LEED Silver Certification for sustainable design and features a 4,500-square-foot mosaic roof, a “living room” area with a fireplace, a shaded Poets’ Patio, and permanent art installations from local artists woven into the building design."

For Some of the World’s Poor, Hope Comes Via Design

For Some of the World’s Poor, Hope Comes Via Design | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"Simplicity itself.

One last example, from Bangladesh: Mohammed Rezwan, a local architect, has designed “community lifeboats” that serve as floating schools, libraries and health clinics. With sea levels rising, nearly 20 percent of the land there is predicted to be under water by 2050. The low-lying Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, the most densely populated area in the world, will flood. Working with native boat builders Mr. Rezwan adapted the traditional flat-bottom bamboo riverboat to create his Noah’s Arks. He outfitted the boats with waterproof roofs and solar panels, installed computers, high-speed Internet and portable solar lamps made from recycled kerosene lanterns. Traditional materials, local building techniques and renewable energy sources produced a model of contextual design."

Making a Difference

Since October 2009, California Council for the Humanities has been working with the Riverside County Library System to train librarians to facilitate thoughtful, informed, and civil dialogue in their communities. Through the Making a Difference program and support from the California State Library, librarians are taking a new approach to programming—developing their own public, theme-based civic engagement programs for their branch libraries and leading discussions around issues of importance and concern in their communities. By animating and actively engaging in civic discourse, librarians are transforming libraries into "community living rooms" where patrons can exchange ideas and viewpoints.
