[East Palo Alto] Seed Libraries Crop Up - Boing Boing

Another example of a seed library promoting healthy eating :

"Just as one seed can produce many seeds, one idea can change many lives. Free public libraries were revolutionary in their time because they provided access to books and knowledge that had not previously been available to a large segment of the population. A free seed lending library can also provide people with a chance to transform their lives and communities by providing access to fresh, healthy food that may not otherwise be available."

The Dutch beach library

The Dutch beach library | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"In the Netherlands, that increasingly means going to where the people are instead of waiting for them to visit the local branch. Hence the recently opened Schiphol airport library (the world’s first), and, just for the summer, the beach library (or strandbibliotheek)."

"We in libraries should promote the tools that allow our patrons to create content! Susan [Hildreth, director of Institute of Museums and Library Services] also stresses that partnership is the key to success and we must be embedded in our communities. Our communities will not come to us we need to go to them. The 21st century library can no longer stand alone, collaboration is going to be key."

Library To Open At Otay Ranch Town Center

Library To Open At Otay Ranch Town Center | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"It is the first time a city library has been placed in a shopping mall in the county."

[...]

"The [Otay] Town Center offered the space to Chula Vista [Public Library], free of charge, to help the city, which has slashed millions from its budget the past few years."
"The Otay Ranch Branch replaces the old library previously located at Eastlake High School, which closed last year after being open only a couple days a week."
"The free rent allows the new library to remain open five days a week. Chula Vista also has two other libraries, but they're on the other side of town.
The new library also fills three empty spots in the Food Pavilion, two of which have never had tenants since the mall opened a few years ago."

INTERVIEW: Seth Godin on Libraries, Literary Agents and the Future of Book Publishing as We Know It

INTERVIEW: Seth Godin on Libraries, Literary Agents and the Future of Book Publishing as We Know It | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"[Jeff] Rivera: A number of publishers have pulled the plug on library editions of eBooks. Do you think that is a wise business decision and if not, how do you see it being a win-win scenario?

[Seth Godin]: How incredibly silly. Libraries are like the radio for books. Not a money-maker for all, but a great way to spread an idea. I don’t think you can find a single author who suffered any damage at all because too many people took his book out of the library.

Ebooks for libraries need to be tweaked, not killed."

Stop Branding Your Library!!

Stop Branding Your Library!! | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"One the other hand, sometimes I wonder if many libraries are already branded? I’ve been to many libraries around the country that are branded as community libraries. They are branded separate and distinct to the community they serve even though they are part of the same library system. Maybe building community libraries and branding them as the library that serves their community is the way to go. In which case, it is simply the library’s role to serve their community and provide what their community wants and needs. Or, maybe to REALLY stand out from the crowd you shouldn’t brand your library like every other company?"

Windsor Library provides self-publishing tools

Windsor Library provides self-publishing tools | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"A revolutionary “book machine” for a new self-publishing lab provides Windsor Public Library with another first-in-Canada bragging right, library officials said on Thursday.
“I was so excited to see it,” library board chairman Al Maghnieh said of the Xerox Espresso Book Machine, which he recently saw in action at a public library in Washington, D.C.
It enables people to bring in their writing on a jump drive or any other type of memory device, design book covers and other graphics on accompanying Mac computers, and watch as the book machine prints and binds their book.”

Art Installation Shows Books Bursting Off The Library Shelves @PSFK

Art Installation Shows Books Bursting Off The Library Shelves @PSFK | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"[Alicia Martin's book sculptures] Books become more than just a container for knowledge but something alive and expressive in and of themselves. Free from the musty library shelves they are objects that contain an energy that accompanies the words on their pages. Perhaps the meditation on the book as object, and what that communicates to the reader, is something worth considering in an era of tablet and e-reading devices.

Library program aims to help homeless connect with services

Library program aims to help homeless connect with services | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

"SALT LAKE CITY — The City Library has developed a plan to better help Utah’s homeless. The plan consists of hiring three on-site social workers to help the homeless better understand resources available to them. There will also be a vehicle that can be used to transport individuals to places where they can get more information. It is modeled after a successful program already in place at the San Francisco Public Library."

The children who don’t get read to at home also don’t get to the library. So the libraries are trying to go to them. But early literacy outreach efforts are limited by tight budgets, librarians say.

A partnership is being developed with the farmer’s market and a regional program is in the works for youth at risk.
