The sound of youthful laughter carries down the hallway as I approach my destination, passing an 8-foot-tall graffiti mural. ..

Doug Mirams's insight:

“It’s like my dream room,” [Nohami Sefer ] says of the Teen Zone. “It’s our place, where they let us be us.” She’s in the Teen Zone nearly every day after school to meet with friends from other schools, listen to music, and get in some obligatory homework. “We can do whatever we want. They trust us.”

It’s turned out to be a real partnership. We are exchanging audiences.”  This partnership was expanded through funding with Knight Arts Foundation.

8 key take-aways from our new report on makerspaces - RSA

8 key take-aways from our new report on makerspaces - RSA | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
This week the RSA publishes a new report that attempts to make sense of makerspaces – why they are emerging, what impact they are having on their users and communities, and what challenges they are likely to face in the future. Here we present 8 key findings from our research, which includes a survey conducted by YouGov.

From 3d printing to pottery, and from eco-retrofit classes to Arduino bootcamps, a social movement has emerged based on making and mending. People are learning new skills, creating new enterprises and enjoying the satisfaction of mastering technology and craftsmanship. But this is more than just a rediscovery of craft married to 21st Century technology – this is about a collective approach to mastering technology together. It is as much about being as making.

Marcel Breuer's Central Library in Atlanta Faces Demolition Threat

Marcel Breuer's Central Library in Atlanta Faces Demolition Threat | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
Like many Brutalist buildings in America, the Central Library in Atlanta by Marcel Breuer is facing demolition, reports The Architect's Newspaper. Completed in 1980 with a 300-seat theater, restaurant and 1 million books, the building exemplifies Breuer’s sensibilities, with its bush-hammered concrete panels and Bauhaus-inspired forms. However, over the years the building has fallen into disrepair, with its theater closing in the mid-1990s, and the restaurant closing a few years later. In 2002, the city spent $5 million on restoration. Even so, in 2008, voters approved a $275 million bond referendum, which included a proposal to replace the library by Breuer with another. Despite protests from preservationists, the building’s future is uncertain, with voters clearly calling for a new library building.

Trendhunter finds affluent parents willing to pay for "imagination stimulating libraries" in their child's private schools

Trendhunter finds affluent parents willing to pay for "imagination stimulating libraries" in their child's private schools | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

children's library - The school environment is often not the focus for design initiatives beyond the basics, but the Children’s Library of Thomas’s London Day School has been given an update to make it look and feel as creative as possible. Designed by Hugh Broughton Architects, the Children's Library of Thomas's London Day School incorporates a floor that's inspired by the world map, colorfully oversized seating solutions and much more to encourage creativity and interaction.

As affluent parents opt for private education over public, many are looking for the absolute best facilities to place their children in the care of. As such, the Children's Library of Thomas's London Day School is designed to indeed stimulate children's minds, but also satisfy design-conscious parents as well..

Via Trudy Raymakers
Doug Mirams's insight:

Hopefully these design considerations will be accepted by public institutions and not just restricted to "affluent parents" and private schools.

Can Kids As Young As Three Learn to Design and Create In Fab Labs? - Mind/Shift

Can Kids As Young As Three Learn to Design and Create In Fab Labs? - Mind/Shift | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
Screen time for young children has been a hotly contested debate among parents for years. Many worry that passive consumption of media through screens harms young children’s brain development, or at the very least means they are getting less interaction with caregivers, other children and hands-on play. On the other hand, most children under the age of 8 have access to a mobile device in the home and it can be hard to enforce an absolutely-no-screen-time rule. The Bay Area Discovery Museum, which focuses on hands-on, play-based learning, is trying to introduce a more active kind of technology use with the first Fab Lab for kids ages 3 and up.
