Doug Mirams's insight:

This mobile "library" project is delivering more than books to its community,

"The free plan becomes a flexible, transparent platform that relates directly with the urban and social context. The lorry is a forum that can be used as a venue for an endless number of activities: book presentations, film clubs, poetry readings, workshops, as well as the opportunity to consult its bibliographic holdings."

The people of Geelong are connecting with their industrial past as the city undergoes a community-led creative transformation.
Doug Mirams's insight:
Profiles Deakin University's (Australia) Hubcaps to Creative Hubs (#Hc2CH) . Seeing an excess surplus of properties in its neglected industrial past, a series of short films have increased community awareness allowing successful crowdfunding.

THE FUTURE OF LIBRARIES

THE FUTURE OF LIBRARIES | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
This piece originally appeared on the Sasaki blog and was written by our Bryan Irwin, AIA, LEED AP. Bryan is a design leader in the Campus…
Doug Mirams's insight:
In their article about the evolving changes to academic libraries, Sasaki Associates brings up the neglected area of librarian workspaces in those public buildings.
"Despite promising changes in the roles and perceptions of librarians, it is often difficult in current spatial layouts for patrons to locate and access librarians and library services. A survey of academic librarian spaces we recently conducted found that 59% of librarians’ work spaces were out of the public eye"
Places like the Salisbury University Academic Commons (http://www.sasaki.com/project/371/Salisbury%20University%20Academic%20Commons/), a Sasaki project, are attempting to reverse this trend and allow librarians (who want to engage with their clients) become for visible.
Sasaki Associates does demonstrate that there are better futures for libraries than "soul-less/staff-less/Free Little Community Centres" which seem to dominate our conversations.

Pack in the fun with Nature Backpacks - ALSC Blog | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

For the past two years, the Vancouver Community Library has partnered with our local branch of the United States Forest Service to checkout nature backpacks to patrons.

Doug Mirams's insight:
With the National Parks system anniversary in the States this year, and our own Parks Canada preparing for free admission next year for Canada's 150, it is nice to see libraries encouraging nature education. These Nature  Backpacks from Vancouver Community Library IL and the WildCO app developed in partnership with Mesa County Libraries CO (http://www.nbc11news.com/content/news/Local-libraries-connect-outdoor-exploration-with-wildlife-education.html) are models which can be adopted on either side of the border.

Find out why the Carnegie Branch of the Vancouver Public Library is the third busiest in the city.
Doug Mirams's insight:
Great profile of the smallest branch of the Vancouver Public Library, the Carnegie branch located downtown, which has the third highest circulation for that city's public library system. A valued component of its community, Carnegie Branch proves, once again, size doesn't matter as much as heart.

Latest MSO pop-up creates arts happening at Central Library

Latest MSO pop-up creates arts happening at Central Library | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
Classical music performances aren't what they used to be. Gone are the staid, starched affairs many still (incorrectly) associate with symphony and ensemble concerts, replaced these days with events like the Symphony's pop-up concerts, the latest of which takes place this week.
Doug Mirams's insight:
Milkwaukee Symphony Orchestra has "secret symphony" and popups; what a very creative idea for community engagement. These concerts have been performed in lumber yards, churches, bookshops and now on Thursday (January 12) at the Milwaukee Public Library,.

Hosting Tech Camps | The Digital Shift

Hosting Tech Camps | The Digital Shift | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
As community centers, libraries are always looking for new ways to offer educational programming. Some libraries have been fortunate enough to incorporate complete Maker spaces in their buildings, but for those that don't have the funding or space, all is not lost. Using existing areas and the help of community members, libraries can easily host tech camps (coding, robotics, and more) for patrons.

Architecture’s Pivotal Role in the Future of K 12 Learning (EdSurge News)

Architecture’s Pivotal Role in the Future of K 12 Learning (EdSurge News) | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
What does the future of learning look like? If we apply principles from architecture, learning should be flexible, collaborative, sustainable, and filled with daylight.School buildings and their learning environments have remained relatively static over time. The majority of our schools are decades
Doug Mirams's insight:
We have learnt so much about the psychological and emotional impact of built environments since Whyte's research. We have Happy Cities and workplaces which look more like idealized daycare centres while most classrooms, and can I say, public learning institutions like libraries are trapped in their era. It is good to remind us that architecture also effects how we learn.

When the recession hit pause on the plans Kansas’s Wichita Public Library (WPL) had to replace its aging central building, library leaders used the opportunity to tap into community feedback. As a result, the replacement will offer features and services tailored to patrons’ needs and will support the city as it moves into the future by fostering civic growth and engagement.
