Home Recording Project Turns Building Into An Online Radio Station

Home Recording Project Turns Building Into An Online Radio Station | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
'Home' is a new residence in Amsterdam that houses 69 international students of the city's music academy. The building's owner wanted the surrounding neighborhood to benefit from all the musical talent inside.
Doug Mirams's insight:

Libraries with makerspaces, especially those that emphasis audio/video creation, could use a similar technique to share with their communities when something happens within their walls. Imagine a community being notified, like the red light on a camera, that something new has happened.

District of Columbia and Florida Libraries Receive Awards for Exemplary Service to Blind and Disabled Readers

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress, today presented awards to libraries in the District of Columbia and Florida for outstanding service to blind and disabled readers.
Doug Mirams's insight:

Congratulations to both the DCPL and Brevard County Talking Books Library for their "outstanding service to blind and disabled readers". As I move into a week where I will be seeing the demonstration of the Eyewriter,  a machine built for a paralyzed artist draw again using only the movement of his eyes at North by North East Interactive (http://nxne.com/presentations#50179) and another round of accessibility audits at my system, it is great to see two systems which are doing so much to make all their services accessible for everyone.

Every Library and Museum in America, Mapped

Every Library and Museum in America, Mapped | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

America's collection of museums and libraries is actually super impressive when you look at it on a map.[...]In fact, libraries serve 96.4% of the U.S. population, a reach any fast-food franchise can only dream of."

Doug Mirams's insight:

Statistican Justin Grimes of the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington produced two Google Maps showing the 9 thousand public libraries and 3500 museums in the United States. The maps were produced as part of the National Day of Civic Hacking.

YOUmedia Name-dropped by Chance the Rapper

YOUmedia Name-dropped by Chance the Rapper | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

He’s spoken at length about the role YOUmedia played in his music’s development:

“It was a really ill thing because it was smack in the center of downtown, so anybody from any school could come there because every train comes to the loop [downtown]. I met damn near all the producers on #10Day through this library. It was the spot.” (http://www.complex.com/music/2013/03/who-is-chance-the-rapper/open-mic-nights-at-youmedia)

Doug Mirams's insight:

Aaron Schmidts' (www.walkingpaper.org) comments,

"Consider this a complement to the “I graduated from the library” Bradbury quote we like to trot out. Clearly, a lot of creative output is the result of some sort of library use. But in most cases libraries have been neutral in that they don’t care if they’re for enjoyment, learning, inspiration, etc… or any combination. So what makes this example so great is that YOUmedia isn’t neutral in this way; it has the goal of helping kids create content. This example illustrates that creation focused libraries can have a significant impact."

Doug Mirams's insight:

Pickering Public Library (full disclosure my library) held a community learning/sharing event at the same time as our city's art festival, ArtFest. Called "How To in 10 Minutes Festival" the community was challenged to visit twenty-five "experts" and learn something in 10 minutes.

Inspired by Louisville (KY) Free Library, (http://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/features/10302012/barbecue-flamenco-dancing-learning-gets-interactive-louisville), it was great fun. And, you might see this author learning how to hula hop.

Brooklyn Collection of the Brooklyn Public Library creates oral history around Hurricane Sandy ...

Doug Mirams's insight:

Brookyln Public Library is responding to a need in their community, the need to make sense of the natural disaster that was Hurricane Sandy.

"“Different people had different impressions of it,” [outreach librarian June] Koffi said. “That will be important, just to see that depending on where you lived, it was such a different experience.”

[...]

“People are still trying to rebuild their lives,” she said. “Some have gotten things back to normal and others haven’t. People still have a lot to say about what’s happened.”

The library as public space

The library as public space | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
Many Danish cities are currently redeveloping their libraries or building new ones. The library is no longer a house of books, but a framework for learning, for new as well as old knowledge – both...
Doug Mirams's insight:

The best quote from this article appears in the middle,

"The library can be seen as a public space. It is one of the few non-commercial spaces in the city and also one of the few places with silence zones and no ringing mobile phones (more might come…). Then there is the democratic dimension, the libraries are where a mix of ages, income groups, young and old share the same place. The potential seems to exist for the libraries to play an even more vital and active role as public spaces. This was the conclusion at the conference in Odense, where one of the key strategies of the city, is to select a new location for a central library that would help Odense  to transform from industrial city to a city that has a broader profile and that is rooted in knowledge, culture and education."

These last few years have been challenging ones for both the New York and Brooklyn public libraries. Anemic funding and dwindling resources have collided not only with the need to repair many aging structures, but also to ...
Doug Mirams's insight:

Delays in construction and reduction in size are characteristics of New York  and Brooklyn Public libraries partnerships to revitatize its libraries, writes Kim Velsey. Just as food stalls are not the way to go to revitalize English libraries, perhaps we should wait and see what public/private development mean before we start selling off libraries in North America.

Doug Mirams's insight:

From Helene Blowers,

"Literally hundreds of free access ipads available and attached to every visible area of counter space. The traditional rows of seating near the gates were replaced by workspace counters and ipads that provide free internet, the ability to order have food ordered to your station (credit cards swipes were also at every seat), purchase merchandise from concourse stores and keep up to date on your latest flight information. When you first touched the screen you were prompted for your flight info and altering throughout your browsing session of the status of your flight and time to boarding."
