Yelp says that up to a quarter of the reviews the company receives may be fake, and that its automated review filter suppresses about 25 percent of reviews it deems as being suspicious. However, Yelp admits that the system isn't completely accurate.
Tim O'Keefe's insight:
The review supression is interesting. Yelp is not the only one. Like Yelp Google gives value to reviews that are "aged" and active accounts at reviewing. So there is a certain type of person that is getting perhaps an unfair amount of credibility compared to the one time reviewer. It seems to me this is terrific for the self proclaimed internet cops that have nothing better than to comment and review companies.
