Social Curation with Twitter: a Research Study by NTT

Via Robin Good
more...
Robin Good's curator insight, February 17, 2014 10:22 AM

From the paper abstract:  "Social media such as microblogs have become so pervasive such that it is now possible to use them as sensors for real-world events and memes.

While much recent research has focused on developing automatic methods for filtering and summarizing these data streams, we explore a different trend called social curation.

In contrast to automatic methods, social curation is characterized as a human-in-the-loop and sometimes crowd-sourced mechanism for exploiting social media as sensors."

The paper attempts to analyze curated microblog data and to understand the main reasons why people "participate in this laborious curation process".

It also looks at "new ways in which information retrieval and machine learning technologies can be used to assist curators" and it also suggests "a novel method based on a learning-to-rank framework that increases the curator's productivity and breadth of perspective by suggests which novel microblogs should be added to the curated content."

The paper contains valuable information for anyone interested in having more statistical data about social curation activities and patterns on Twitter, the use of lists and the typical reasons why individuals want to do this.

Interesting. 7/10

Ready For The Visual Marketing Revolution? 12 Tips From Infographics Experts Column Five

Ready For The Visual Marketing Revolution? 12 Tips From Infographics Experts Column Five | SocialMediaDesign | Scoop.it

Making Warby Parker's Annual Report VISUAL
As Beyonce proved when she rethought her last album to be more visual the visual marketing revolution is here (Beyonce covered here http://sco.lt/7Pci1p). Here are 12 GREAT Visual Marketing Tips from Column 5 the Infographics experts:

1. Be Visual.
2. Show YOUR Personality.

3. Only share NEWSWORTHY news.

4. Let People See Your Engine (able to look behind the curtain).

5. Focus on and Feature Your POEPLE.

6. Make IT Easy To Share (and IT is everything).

7. Present DATA in context.

8. Don't forget the TANGENTIAL.
9. Share the LOVE.
10. Product Tie-Ins should happen NATURALLY and ORGANICALLY.

11. Share VALUES.

12. Pat yourself on the BACK every now and again.

My favorite is FEATURE YOUR PEOPLE. Clients ask me and/or complain they have no good content. Nonsense you have amazing content sitting at desks or on the shop floor.

Telling your product's story by proxy, by telling the stories of the people that work on it, is a brilliant way to create STICKY content that isn't self-serving and feels more TRUE.

Do you know that Google supports hashtag search?

The feature has been there for a few months. However, I only became aware of it a day or two ago. Not only does Google surface results for Google+ (public posts and posts shared with you), but it also links to Twitter and Facebook! Here is an example of what happens with the hashtag #socialmedia (I'm logged into my G+, Twitter, and Facebook accounts). Click the picture to see the zoomed version. Not logged into your profiles? No problem! You can still see results for Google+ and Twitter. Now, go have fun on Google Search! :-)

Big Data: Large Dataset Curation & Sharing with AcademicTorrents

Via Robin Good
more...
Robin Good's curator insight, February 3, 2014 8:13 AM

AcademicTorrents is a new web service which allows any organization owning large datasets (no size limits) to easily distribute them without needing a dedicated infrastructure.

The brainchild of Joseph Cohen and Henry Lo, two PhD students working at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, Academic Torrents facilitates the job of researchers, journalists and information analysts in finding, accessing, curating and downloading large-size datasets.

Technically-speaking AcademicTorrents is a bittorrent-type redundant high-speed network and a full distributed system for sharing enormous datasets. As a P2P system it doesn't require intermediate servers, is also fully scalable, secure, fault-tolerant and can act as a reliable repository for data allowing fast downloads.

Users can also search the full index, and can create curated datasets collections containing any kind of files and which can be downloaded as a full bundle.

This type of system could prove to be an excellent resource for libraries storing digital papers as they would store books, and for simplifying the distribution requirements of any organization needing to publish, curate and share large datasets.

"A robust distributed replication design allows libraries to utilize this system as their backbone. Providing fault tolerant hosting of curated data for a university, research lab, or home library.

...Also, this system can be used as the foundation of a new open-access publishing system where libraries manage data instead of licenses for external data sources.

Curate and Syndicate Your Own Custom Mobile TV Channel App with iLook.TV

Curate and Syndicate Your Own Custom Mobile TV Channel App with iLook.TV | SocialMediaDesign | Scoop.it

"iLook.TV crowdsources TV channels, TV programs and TV commercials."

Via Robin Good

Robin Good's curator insight, January 26, 2014 5:29 AM

iLook.TV lets you curate custom TV channels distributable via smartphone compatible apps that act as pay-TV like subscription channels.

The channels are commercial and can include or accept advertising requests thus providing a monetization opportunity for channel curators.

iLook.TV is made up of two components:

1) iLook.TV website where you create your channels

2) iLook.TV ChannelApp for ditributing your custom channel

In a Channel you can add / syndicate video clips and submit TV commercials to the iLook.TV system.

The ChannelApp is instead a mobile app that can be fully utilized by Channel subscribers as Program Guide for your channel as well as a TV remote to watch specific video content on their connected large TV screens. The ChannelApp can be branded, configured and submitted to the Apple App Store.

ILOOKTV supports three methods of monetization: subscription, pay-per-view, and TV commercials.

Soecifically:

  • A Channel subscription must be purchased by a TV viewer to play videos that are marked premium.

  • Pay-per-view (PPV) videos are marked with “Buy” (forever) or “Rent” (for 24-hours) and require a payment from a TV viewer.

  • TV commercials are submitted to the ILOOKTV system by advertisers and are automatically played on Channels that request them.  Advertisers are automatically charged for each insertion via instant auctions.

.

Revenues are collected by iLook.TV from subscriptions, PPV and commercials and are automatically shared with Channel owners.

.

The cost to own a Channel is $100 per year.

N.B.: Channel owners also need to pay the standard $100 Apple Developer fee when they submit the ChannelApp to the Apple App Store.

.

Promising concept. Rough implementation.
A glimpse at what the future of video curated content may look like in the near future.

Create, Publish and Curate Your Company Social Hub with Uberflip

Create, Publish and Curate Your Company Social Hub with Uberflip | SocialMediaDesign | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good

Robin Good's curator insight, February 11, 2014 5:26 PM

Uberflip is a new web publishing tool that allows a company to easily create a social hub populated with the most relevant content coming from their main media properties, including blogs, RSS feeds, social media channels, images and videos, presentations and PDF documents.

Uberflip publishing metaphor is the "hub" in which, similarly to Rebelmouse and Pressly you can create multiple channels where you either aggregate or curate theme-specific content.

Among Uberflip unique features there is the ability to import and convert PDF documents into editable flipbooks, an array of widgets that can be added to integrate more functionalities (e.g.: Disqus comments) and a call-to-action feature allowing you to integrate customizable and elegant subscription boxes that directly connect to your newsletter provider (e.g.: Malchimp).

Check my test site to get an idea of what you can do with it: http://robingood.uberflip.com/h/

My comment: Compared to Rebelmouse, Pressly, Uberflip is a tough contender. Its key strengths are the elegant and clean output design, which displays excellently also on tablets and smartphones and the breadth of features for curating and collecting content (e.g.: custom collections). Uberflip is also the only tool of this kind that integrates a PDF to flipbook conversion engine, allowing you to integrate any company PDF into one or more collections in a beautiful format to view.

The Basic version, which allows for one hub with multiple channels, one custom collection and one CTA costs $49.95/month. Higher priced versions at 199 and 499/mo allow for using your custom domain, more collections, CTAs and additional features including analytics and other features.
