Introducing Timeline

Introducing Timeline | Social Business | Scoop.it

Timeline (the new Facebook profile) has been in 'soft' intro phase for a while and is now available for everyone.  With it you can tell your life (and work) story through photos, uploads, personal milestones and achievements.  Rather like an online autobiography.

From a personal perspective I love it, and I can see its application as an employee too.   It provides a rich and creative way to display career history and achievements (see the post Facebooks Timeline will Impact Your Career).

I could create a profile of the projects that I have worked on this year which I can make soley available to my boss. I am considering using it at my annual review meeting.

The ease of navigating your history (both professional and personal) has implications that are important to understand. However the 'lists' functionatlity allows you to choose who can see what, and can be used to counter any risks to privacy.

If you are connected to colleagues / employees or your manager on Facebook -I recommend the following:

First a full spring clean of your profile, removing anything you find emabarrasing (we all have status updates or pics we could / should edit!)

Ensure you update missing info.  Many of us have used Facebook for personal information only, now is the time to get your career and education history up to date.

Then make full use of the 'lists' funtionality, make a specific list for work. This enables you to connect with colleagues on your terms. Every time you post content, consider who it is relevant to, and allow access accordingly.

Good luck in getting to know your Timeline and feel free to give me a shout if I can help at all.

International Association of Business Communicators finds more companies moving toward social media, but with low satisfaction rates - Articles - Employee Benefit News

Most organizations have at least one social media tool on their intranet to enhance employee communication, with blogs being the most popular tool, according to the International Association of Business Communicators. The leading need or reason behind Intranet 2.0 implementations is employee collaboration (78%), followed closely by employee engagement (75%). Of organizations that do not have at least one social media tool, 18% cite lack of executive support as the primary barrier to implementation and the same number (18%) cite other, bigger priorities preventing them from implementation.

Block Facebook for employees, say lawyers | Business Weekly

Block Facebook for employees, say lawyers | Business Weekly | Social Business | Scoop.it

In the interest of sharing all different perspectives this article makes an interesting read.  I don't agree with their stance as I think it is very short sighted and indicative of creating the conditions that erodes employee engagement.

Many employees have smart phones and can access sites like facebook regardless of whether they are 'allowed to'.

Interesting to hear this view, although I think time and money would be better spent in developing a culture where the appropriate use of social media is created  (including using the right social media in the right context).

Luis von Ahn: Massive-scale online collaboration | Video on TED.com

This fascinating TED Talk by Luis von Ahn shows the incredible stuff that can be achieved by using small contributions of many on the Internet for greater good. I think there is food for thought here for large organisations - its a very different model. The combination of an 'out there' thinker who can see how to harness mass collaboration whilst delivering  a win win outcome will add significant value and could achieve the unimaginable!

Companies Around The World Are Banning Social Media Sites At Work More Than Ever

Companies Around The World Are Banning Social Media Sites At Work More Than Ever | Social Business | Scoop.it
The attitude towards social media is changing in workplaces around the world, but employers not quite there yet. I wonder what the rationale is? Given the prevelance of smart phones, employees can access their social media of choice whether or not they can access via company Internet. Banning it seems only to serve the embedding of the belief that managers and organisations are over controlling and fearful of social media.
