Nurturing Internal Social Networks - the benefits and challenges

Nurturing Internal Social Networks - the benefits and challenges | Social Business | Scoop.it

"Many companies have already begun using internal social networks. With the arrival of several new and highly-heralded social software applications, IBM Connections perhaps being foremost among them, this trend can only be expected to continue and accelerate in coming years. So, what are the benefits of having an internal social network? And what are the drawbacks or challenges?"

Something to think about.

Social media @ work: opportunity or danger?

Social media @ work: opportunity or danger? | Social Business | Scoop.it

Social media @ work: opportunity or danger?
The People Management webinar sponsored by Oracle
29th February 2012, at 1:00pm (GMT)

A vigorous debate is underway about whether - and if so, how - employers should try to influence content or restrict access to Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and other social media, by employees at work. Conversely, how can organisations use their own social media systems to strengthen communications, boost creativity or provide learning experiences?

We are invited to follow the latest developments by joining the next People Management webinar.

Some of the questions that will be asked include:

What purposes do employees use social media at work for?
Does a restrictive policy amount to saying 'we don't trust you'?
Or would it help everyone to be clear about appropriate boundaries?
To what extent can social media boost communications and creativity?
What's the potential of internal social media systems?
This webinar will explore these issues by sharing the experience of leading HR professionals who are knowledgeable about the use of social media by employees in different ways.

I am looking forward to attending this webinar - hope to see you there?

Executive 'forced out of job' over LinkedIn CV - Telegraph

Executive 'forced out of job' over LinkedIn CV - Telegraph | Social Business | Scoop.it

A human resources executive was forced out of his job after angering his
employer by putting his CV online and advertising that he was interested in
other “career opportunities”, a tribunal heard.

What would you do if this was your direct report?

There are lessons to be learned on both sides. I also think  this highlights a development need to help managers best to deal with such situations in a way that does not lead to tribunal action and most probably cause damage to their employer brand too.

I went through a short period where I was unsure if I was in the right role.  I was lucky enough to have a manager I trusted so I  talked to him about this.   He supported my desire to explore other opportunities (in and outside the company). In conjuction with this we worked on finding solutions to the things that were obstacles to my full engagement.   As a result during that period I remained committed to my role and responisbilties whilst also considering my options.

In the end the way my manager responded to this situation evoked an even stronger sense of engagement, committment and loyalty moving forward, we found a way to ensure a good job role fit aligned to the company goals.  A happy ending!  Had there been  a lack of trust in the first instance I woudln't have raised  the issues and might be working for someone else right now. Had I spoken to my boss and he reacted badly things could have also panned out differently.   I think we are both glad things worked out as they did.

An employee open to career oppportunities doestn't have to get 'nasty' but can be the gateway to higher levels of  employee engagement.
