2013 Locavore Index ranks states commitment to local foods

Linda Alexander's curator insight, April 22, 2013 10:21 AM

This ranking doesn't consider a specific city, but the entire state's performance.  Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Vermont with its embedded local economy and food cultural came as #1 in the country.  Ohio  is only 36th but Clevelanders take heart, as a city we are surely much better.  Arizona and a few other bottom-dwelling states have a long way to go still yet.

This Index link also includes at the bottom of the page:

Wooden Skyscrapers: A New Level of Sustainability?

Wooden Skyscrapers: A New Level of Sustainability? | Social Venture Capital | Scoop.it

A new breed of high-rise architecture is in the process of being born, thanks to the collaborative efforts of modern design pioneers. Envisioned as the best sustainable option for meeting world housing demands and decreasing global carbon emissions, wooden mega-structures are now one step closer to becoming a reality.

“Big Wood,” a conceptual project to the eVolo 2013 Skyscraper Competition, builds on the premise that wood, when harvested responsibly, is one of the best tools architects and engineers have for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating healthy communities. Aspiring to become one of the greenest skyscrapers in the world, Big Wood challenges the way we build our cities and promotes timber as a reliable platform to support tomorrow’s office and residential towers...

Whoa..Chicago!

Geovanni's curator insight, May 8, 2013 9:32 AM

Fascinating place. Must of been a lot of wood to be created.

Bubba Muntzer's comment, May 13, 2013 11:44 AM
It takes around 30 years for a seedling to grow into the kind of wood that can be used in construction. A little maintenance is required during that period. Meanwhile it's soaking up CO2 and making oxygen. The only industrial processes required are to cut it down and cut it into boards and 2 x 4s. If you stagger your planting you have an endless supply.

Aside from really wanting to showcase this Web site on this account, it is important to note that Dr. James Hansen announced his retirement.

"Dr. James Hansen, the top climate scientist in the US has just announced his retirement from NASA. He's been one of the best advocates a planet could ask for -- he even gave us our name when he wrote that 350 parts per million is the safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere."

ASHOKA NOW: Ashoka to Launch “Nutrients for All” movement

ASHOKA NOW: Ashoka to Launch “Nutrients for All” movement | Social Venture Capital | Scoop.it

Envision a world where people measure their health based on how fully nourished they are; where foods are valued based on the nutrients they deliver to the body; where food processors and commodity traders procure agricultural crops based on nutrient content, in addition to traditional factors like quantity and storage life; and where farmers and investors pay for land based on its capacity to generate nutrients in soils (and thus reap related benefits like carbon financing as well).
