TVs Growing Pains in the New Millennium - Viewer's Have New Expectations

TVs Growing Pains in the New Millennium - Viewer's Have New Expectations | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

What exactly is TV these days? The younger the person is that you ask, the more and more you'll hear an answer that defines television by content that is shown in a series format, not just linear programming through those rigid old pipes.

IMDB Wants to Challenge Twitter on Social TV Front

IMDB Wants to Challenge Twitter on Social TV Front | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it
Amazon's been making a much bigger push into advertising and original entertainment.
Nicholas Barr's insight:

Despite the headline this has very little, if anything, to do with social TV and ultimately nothing to do with challenging Twitter. However, it does touch on a big opportunity for a second-screen use case. IMDb is one of the primary destinations for those "what has she been in before?" moments when people reach for their second-screens. However, currently X-ray for Movies does not sync with the TV screen. In fact at the moment it is designed to be used while watching content on Kindle Fires. But, you have to pause the movie to access the app. So, it's not really a second-screen experience either... yet. So to sum up, the article was written by someone who doesn't have a clue about the subject area, but is food for thought nonetheless.

White paper: How the second screen changes the television experience

White paper: How the second screen changes the television experience | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it
Nicholas Barr's insight:

The poor translation makes reading this quite hard going. However, pages 11 - 22 contain some interesting analysis. The crux of this paper is that, within France, Social TV offers only a limited opportunity for advertisers. Currently, it is a niche market. Driving audiences towards social interactions means steering them away from the main screen towards second-screen devices. Moreover, the most obvious time for second-screen engagement is during commercial breaks. As such, broadcasters risk undermining their core ad sales and alienating their majority audience by trying to chase these early adopters.

TV shows should feature pre-planned social media triggers

TV shows should feature pre-planned social media triggers | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

Based on experience, shows aimed at the youth market need to have between 10 and 15 triggers baked into them to prompt social media conversations, says Phillip Bourchier O’Ferrall, senior VP of Viacom International Media networks

Nicholas Barr's insight:

This reinforces the view that a second-screen strategy is not a bolt-on, but should be initiated at the conception stage of a show.

These Are the Biggest Hurdles Facing Social TV

These Are the Biggest Hurdles Facing Social TV | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

For social TV to be meaningful to advertisers and TV viewers alike, a few pieces of the puzzle have to be put into place. For one, we need to find a way to make tweeting work for live episodic TV. We also need to find a way to get hashtag TV out of its own echo chamber and apply some filtering to Twitter.

Eurovision Song Contest 2013 gets an official second-screen app

Eurovision Song Contest 2013 gets an official second-screen app | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

This year's Eurovision Song Contest will have an official companion app.

Nicholas Barr's insight:

The app has been developed with co-ordination by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) by public service broadcasters in Sweden’s (SVT), Germany (NDR) and the Netherlands (TROS). It is available to iOS and Android users in English, Swedish, German and Dutch. This is probably one of the first examples of a major, multi-lingual second-screen app for concurrent international use making it a very interesting case-study. The Eurovision Song Contest attracts 125 million viewers from over 40 countries.

Jeroen Doucet's comment, May 10, 3:54 AM
Great initiative. The paid voting through Pay Pal is a risky strategy. Recent experiments in the UK show that participation rates significantly increase (quadruple?) with free voting.

NBC’s “The Voice” is Changing How We Watch TV…With Twitter

NBC’s “The Voice” is Changing How We Watch TV…With Twitter | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

It’s become common practice for a show to casually toss a hashtag in the corner of the TV screen, but the tricky part is figuring out what comes next. The Voice and NBC have involved Twitter so heavily in the viewing experience that the end result is a fully integrated, interested, and engaged audience for advertisers and brands to reach.

TVFiends's curator insight, May 1, 3:00 PM

Agree- The Voice seems to have mastered Twitter and Second Screen:

Not many networks do social media as well as NBC has with The Voice.

Q&A with Univision’s David Beck: Harnessing the Power of Social TV

Q&A with Univision’s David Beck: Harnessing the Power of Social TV | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

'We always ask ourselves, “Is this relevant and will it resonate?”  Is the social integration “relevant” to the content experience, and is it likely to “resonate” with the audience?... Get comfortable being uncomfortable; it’s going to take some time for this all to be sorted out."

Nicholas Barr's insight:

Really good insights from someone at the forefront of developing a social TV strategy within a large network. Again the need to integrate a social TV strategy from the start is reiterated, with Beck going further to state that the strategy needs to be part of a holistic approach across the organisation.

Mining the TV-Twitter connection

Mining the TV-Twitter connection | Social TV & Second Screen Information Repository | Scoop.it

The promise of social TV for advertisers is in uniting paid media (purchased ads) and earned media (the conversation out there that money can’t buy on its own.) By analyzing the larger conversation, learning who the audience is, what they are saying, and what else they like, the hope is that advertisers can make smarter decisions across all media, new and old.
