When African states gained independence, the continent's new leaders agreed to respect the old colonial borders to avoid endless wars.

 

This interactive map shows the major conflicts on the African continent where the combatants have geopolitical aspirations to separate from the state and create a new, autonomous state.  Click on the red arrows and you can read about the warring factions and the current situation in that region.

The 24 free lessons from Understanding Fiscal Responsibility (UFR): A Curriculum for Teaching about the Federal Budget, National Debt, and Budget Deficit connect students to the current public policy dilemmas about the federal budget, national debt, and budget deficit that confront the US and its citizens. These 1-2 day lessons are not interdependent and are appropriate for students ranging from grades 9–12 in Civics, Government, Economics, History, Geography, and Math.

On the curriculum’s website, teachers can create an account to download all the lessons, its respective resources and supporting documents. Additionally, with a UFR account, teachers can create a site for their classroom in the UFR Network. The website includes resources to help teachers use the curriculum such as professional development videos, glossary of common terms, and links to interactive media and games dealing with the federal budget, national debt and budget deficit.

The African Online Digital Library (AODL) is a portal to multimedia collections about Africa. MATRIX, working in cooperation with the African Studies Center at Michigan State University, is partnering with universities and cultural heritage organizations in Africa to build this resource. Plans are underway to add digital tools in order to enable scholars to work with and add to these materials. Individuals and organizations interested in contributing to the African Online Digital Library are invited to contact us.

GE Teach is a phenomenal site, designed by an AP teacher to bring geospatial technologies into the classroom in a way that is incredibly user-friendly. This site allows you to use Google Earth with clickable layers. With multiple data layers of physical and human geography variables, this interactive globe puts spatial information in powerful, yet fun, student-inspired platform.  Click here for a video tutorial.

Charlie Haughey was assigned as a staff photographer in Vietnam, and took over 2000 photos during his 18 month tour.  The negatives sat for 40 years...until now.

On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard gunned down Jeffrey Miller, Allison Krause, William Knox Schroeder, and Sandra Scheuer during an anti-war protest at Kent State University.

Photos like this that juxtapose the original photograph to present day surroundings always grab me.  What an interesting discussion this could be in a history classroom!

This is a poignant image that strikes a chord with me.  History is embedded within place even if the historical events are not memorialized within the landscape.  May 4, 2013 not only marked the anniversary of the Kent State tragedy, it also was the day that the great Wilbur Zelinsky passed away. He was a geographer who analyzed the cultural landscape as well as anyone ever did, and I consider myself fortunate enough to have had conversations with him while I was at Penn State.

Get into the spirit of March Madness by challenging your knowledge on the sizes of Metropolitan Statistic Areas and state population (just think electoral college).  I got a 56 on my first stab (59 for the states)...what did you get?

This online game where you return the "misplaced" country on the map is more than just an exercise in locating places (there are many online map quizzes for that sort of activity).  What makes this one unique is that as you move the country north or south the country expands or contracts according to how that country would be projected if that were its actual location on a Mercator map.  This is a great way to introduce projections.
