For many years people considered the Renaissance to be the rebirth of learning.  It is not that learning didn't occur during the Middle Ages but people tended to be more isolated.  The feudal system began breaking down during plague outbreaks with survivors moving to cities for work.  When this happened new technologies and ideas began to spread and there was a massive surge in work in the arts and sciences.
