The Book Bench: White Until Proven Black: Imagining Race in Hunger Games

On Tuesday, February 28th, a twenty-nine-year-old Canadian male fan of Suzanne Collins’s dystopian young adult trilogy, “The Hunger Games,” logged onto the popular blogging platform Tumblr for the first time and created a site he called Hunger Games Tweets. The young man, whom I’ll call Adam, had been tracking a disturbing trend among Hunger Games enthusiasts: readers who could not believe—or accept—that Rue and Thresh, two of the most prominent and beloved characters in the book, were black, had been posting vulgar racial remarks.

The Science of Social Pressure

By now you’ve undoubtedly heard that Facebook allows people to share their organ donor status. A friend of mine adjusted her information on the day of the announcement to reflect her donor status and someone quipped, “What did you donate?” Snark potential aside, it’s a wonderful way to bring the donor community together and to raise awareness about organ donation overall.

Why Big Brands Are More Socially Fit

The story of the Titanic is being live-tweeted in the build up to its 100-year anniversary

As we approach the 100-year anniversary of the sinking, there will likely be a plethora of TV, magazine, Internet and newspaper features covering the iconic event, looking at how the supposed ‘unsinkable ship’ met its maker on its maiden voyage, taking 1,517 passengers and crew with it to a watery grave.

Whilst you’ll no doubt know many of the anecdotes already, if you’re keen to relive the events through the eyes of those alive at the time, a new Twitter account has been set up for the month leading up to the anniversary of its sinking.

@TitanicRealTime will chart the Titanic’s epic journey through ‘live’ tweets, broadcasting as though they’re coming directly from those involved.

Recent findings from Columbia researcher Duncan Watts refute the claim that a small subset of people drive larger purchasing patterns. Rather, it is the "pass-around power of everyday people" that really drives viral sharing. It is this latter definition that seems to be getting ignored more and more lately as companies strive to create scores to identify the uber-influencers.
