How Gaming is Making You A Better Person

How Gaming is Making You A Better Person  | Social Skills and Technology | Scoop.it

Video games are a heap of fun and a wonderful way to unwind, but they have more benefits than relieving stress. Some games, even really simple ones like Tetris, have been shown to increase grey matter in the brain with consistent use. Strategy games like Starcraft increase mental flexibility, and you get benefits even from side-scrolling platformers like Mario. I play a video game called Don’t Starve with some friends on most weekends, and I’m pretty sure I can feel a difference in my mental state after the weekends I skip it. Whether that’s more from the gaming or from the social fun, I’m not sure. It’s probably a mixture of the two. Regardless, I should get more gaming into my life. You don’t need a console or even a computer to get the benefits of gaming. Your smartphone has more processing power and better graphics capabilities that console systems from just a few years ago. Though if it’s like mine it barely has enough storage space to hold multiple games. Check up on the handheld gaming revolution with our infographic on the rise of mobile gaming.

Steve Whitmore's insight:
What do you think about this?  This infographic is sponsor by a gaming company. But have you noticed benefits to video game play??

Free Technology for Teachers: Help Students Get Organized with My Study Life

Free Technology for Teachers: Help Students Get Organized with My Study Life | Social Skills and Technology | Scoop.it

tudents and teachers often operate on fast-moving, jam-packed schedules with lengthy to-do lists. Check out My Study Life, a free tool for students that allows them to incorporate complicated schedules (like that new rotating block schedule your school implemented last year), to-do lists, homework reminders, and more. My Study life works on Chrome, Windows, Mac OS, Android, and iOS; even better, it will sync across all of those platforms.

Steve Whitmore's insight:

I like that this seems flexible and can be used across platforms.   It was featured on Free Tech for Teachers.

Virtual Reality will take Addiction to the Next Level (iWebU: Web Secret 422)

Virtual Reality will take Addiction to the Next Level (iWebU: Web Secret 422) | Social Skills and Technology | Scoop.it
Did you know that in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5, Internet Gaming Disorder is not recognized as an official diagnosis? It was introduced in 2013 for further study.

I think we can all save some research dollars by putting that question to rest. Forget the kids who play World of Warcraft for days on end - I have watched adults play Angry Birds until they developed repetitive stress injuries. In China, there's even a boot camp to rehabilitate "web junkies" who prefer the gaming world to the real world.

A recent Tech Insider article stated that the typical adult under the age of 45 relies upon four digital devices, and the average individual spends 90% more time consuming digital media on a smartphone today versus 2013. And the signs of crisis are everywhere. Nearly 60% of computer users check email in the bathroom; 15% have read their email in church; and 85% say they would take a laptop on vacation. Drilling down on the numbers, it’s even worse. We check 40 web sites a day; open 85% of work emails within two minutes; and switch between programs nearly 37 times an hour.
Steve Whitmore's insight:
While I love tech stuff, it is so important that we teach moderation and balance.  This blog post really gives some starting thoughts and concerns.
